Not a great race overall, on very challenging terrain. Planned to run red, but a map shortage resulted in running green instead (thanks, BP, for leaving your map).
Started fine on #1 and #2.
Missed my intended trail toward #3, and took a parallel trail instead. Lost some time when the trail split unexpectedly (not shown on map). Now in the comfort of home, I see that the map shows the trail disappearing across a marsh, and picks up on the other side, but the trail was clearly visible (but wet) across the marsh.
Thought I was a bit right going to #4, so I angled back to the left. It turns out I was actually too far left, and just made it worse. I ended up more than halfway to #5 and had to backtrack to #4.
Did fine on #5 and #6. I took the road to #5 so I could regroup, and I think it helped.
Skirted the south of the marsh to #7, and met up with Julia on the trail leading to the control. We punched together and then parted ways, as she was on the red course.
#8 and #9 were no trouble.
Helped a couple of juniors relocate on the way to #10 (they were going to #8). I lost a big chunk of time going to #10, as I stayed on the trail too long. I ended up almost all the way back to the parking lot.
#11 was OK.
#12, I was in the right spot, but didn't see the control. I then proceeded to lose almost 10 minutes searching all over the place, before finally finding the control back where I was originally.
#13, I feel like it might have been mapped on the wrong boulder, but I'm not sure.
The finish clearing was visible from #13, so I was able to sprint to the finish, and imagine that I had a better race than I actually had.

Adventure Racing race 4:02:11 [5] *** 25.5 mi (9:30 / mi)
ahr:162 max:189 spiked:29/31c shoes: La Sportiva C-Lite 2.0

My first adventure race. The biggest challenge of the race was finding a teammate. I went from zero teammates to 3 within the span of 1 1/2 days. Then I went back to zero a few days later. Fortunately, I got Rocky back on board 4 days before the race. We were team "Sham and Bacon" (the name was part of a deal to get one of my other potential teammates to commit, and it stuck).

When Rainbow Unicorn showed up at the start after hanging flags, I noticed that his pants were wet to the top of his thighs. Sure enough, we got wet just a couple of minutes into the race when the first control, and the trail leading to it, were under water.

4 hours is a long race, given my fitness level, and my quads were on the verge of seizing up. It was great that Rocky was able to lead on the bike, and then I led on the trek.

NOTE: I forgot to start my Garmin until halfway through the first bike section. I stole the distance from Space Monkey's log. For a point-to-point race, I think we were probably close enough to the same distance. His gps track looks fairly similar to what we did.

Splits are posted on the event page.
