Ukraine Training Camp Day 1 PM

After getting up bright and early in the morning, I arrived in Kiev (Kyiv? Kiiv?) together with Rob, Julian, Shep, Troy, and the Australian team coach Brett Weihart for a week of training in WOC-relevant terrain and experiencing the phenomenon that is post-Soviet Ukraine. The goal of the camp was not so much to run up a ton of hours, but rather to run on many different maps and get an idea of what racing at WOC might feel like. For the whole week, we lived in a hotel on the Western edge of Kiev, complete with eggs and mystery dumplings for breakfast, as well as a wide selection of hookers advertising their goods and services at affordable prices just a few steps away from the hotel.

For our first training, we ran around a course on Dubni, a long-and-relay-relevant map, at an easy pace and mostly as a group. The forest was fast and runnable, with a lot of paths and some steep, but not very high, gullies to make for interesting route choices. Additionally, the forest featured a large variety of homeless dogs and puppies, as well as dozens of campfires started by the intrepid natives right in the middle of the woods.
