WOC Spectator Races - Day 5

I was really excited about today's race. The course parameters: 4.0km, 75 meters of climb, 14 controls in very technical, low visibility forest match perfectly the kind of orienteering I enjoy most. The really early start (8:05am) meant that there were no elephant paths, but also that it was nice and cool when I started. I had a really good race, choosing routes that strung together open depressions instead of straying into the green, rocky woods. I made one mistake when I stopped one depression too early (about 1 min) and lost another 30 seconds or so fighting through some particularly nasty brashings. When I finished, I thought I had a shot at finally winning my class, but the Finn who is leading overall swooped in to beat me by 1.28, so I ended up 2nd, and moved into 2nd overall after five days.

Cheering for Ali during the middle final followed, and then a pleasant dinner with Clem, Eddie, and Sandy.

WOC Spectator Races - Day 4

A late start on a hilly course on a hot day is not a recipe for success for me, and I perhaps entered the race with an already somewhat defeated mindset. It didn't help that I started by running 180 degrees in the wrong direction out of the start triangle, only to figure it out and turn around about 20 seconds later. I didn't really make massive mistakes on this course, but just never felt confident or smooth, and picked a couple of poor routes. I ended up 13th, a full 9 minutes behind the winner, after losing about 5 minutes total on the week's least technical course. The only highlight was the control on a giant cross at the top of the massive cliffs overlooking Aix-les-Bains, an absolutely stunning control location.

WOC Spectator Races - Day 3

This was a really technical middle distance race with some tough in control in rocky, green terrain. I had a really good beginning of the course and was in 2nd place after four controls, but then made a parallel error going to #5 and started searching for the control too early, losing over a minute there. I then got stuck in some green on the way to 6, and another 1:30 was gone. A solid race from there, including a best split on the longest leg of the course, and I finished 4th, about 3 minutes down on the winner.

WOC Spectator Races - Day 2

Good race today in some tough woods. Most of the orienteering consisted of picking a trail route, fighting to get to it, making sure you are on the mapped trail and not an elephant path, and knowing when to attack. For the most part, I did this well, except for being pulled in a bad direction when attacking 4. It was really wet and muddy the whole time, and the hillsides were really slippery, but the orienteering was still fun with a lot of route choice decisions that had me standing at the control for a few seconds before making up my mind. I ended up 2nd in H21A, but a full three minutes behind the winner - the same guy as yesterday.

Nice afternoon with a swim in our lake and a dinner with the US WOC team. Definitely excited to cheer during the sprint tomorrow!

WOC Spectator Races - Day 1

I am running H21A here. Today we ran in the wooded part of the WOC long qualification terrain. It was pretty tough going most of the time, and trail routes were desriable, as were safe attackpoints close to the controls. I started off with a 2-minute mistake where I ran right past the control without seeing the flag, looped around and came back to it. I then ran quite well for a while, but had hesitations on virtually every control starting with 11, and then a big mistake (2 minutes) on the tough #16. It was a fun and challenging race, and I really enjoyed myself out there. Looks like a lot of people had some trouble, as I ended up 5th in the class.

After the races it was time to spectate and cheer. It was awesome to see Ali flying into 7th place in her heat, and equally great to see the guys have some good races. In the last few years the middle distance has been a bit disastrous for our men, and this was a nice change with three good runs by Ross, Ken, and Sergei. Ross' 20th place was the 6th time our men have had a 20th place since Brian May qualified for the sprint final in 2004, but no one has done better than 20th. Time to break that trend in the sprint?
Also, Alex had a really good run, and that made me really happy for the rest of the day.

Training on one of the model maps after a great afternoon of cheering and spectating. The terrain is truly and really tough, both physically and technically. You have to fight for every inch, all the while maintaining focus. There are lots of contour and rock features slightly too small to be mapped, so relocation is extremely difficult, and you get punished severely for momentary loss of map contact or imprecision with direction. I found that I'd rather go straight over a 2-3 contour hill than go around and risk getting thrown off line and missing my next feature.

Running 1:45:12 [2] 9.3 mi (11:19 / mi) +562m 9:31 / mi

Fairly epic run with Biggins and Pat-hetic on a pretty bizarre day. We drove up to just below the top of Col du Chat and ran to the top. We then ran along the ridge and scrambled to the top of a massive tooth using cables and ladders. There were awesome views of the valleys in both directions from the top, and of Mont Blanc, high above everything else. We then ran along the ridge south on a nice trail along the top, then back north and to the car. Great run.

The day got weirder as we first had to collect Ed who was stranded by the side of the road 30km north of Aix-les-Bains after his bike rack broke, and then had to emigrate from our hotel after a series of fights with the hotel manager.

On the bright side, WOC starts tomorrow, and I am excited to cheer on Team USA!

Patrick has some awesome pictures here and
Biggins has some more here.
