Note

I got a cortizone injection in my back this morning at the Pain Management Institute in Bethesda. Symptoms are supposed to get better in three days or so. We'll see.

Cross-Training 1:00:00 [2]

Elliptical at the gym.

The junior training camp this weekend now has over 60 juniors signed up. Holy crap! I was planning on maybe 20-30... Should be a weekend of fun chaos, hopefully without a snowstorm this year.

Orienteering 1:12:00 [2] *** 7.0 km (10:17 / km)
14c shoes: VJ Supra Fall 2015

QOC Twisted-O event at Mason Neck.

I ran with Alli and Barney, in practice for Raccoongaine. It was rainy and muddy and a lot of fun. I made a massive parallel error at one point, costing us at least 10 points and probably 3-4 minutes, but the rest of the course went well. We traded off who ran with the dog, which was fairly effective, and Barney proved to be a good little runner, braving the mud and the rain with no problems. Really fun!

Hanging streamers for next weekend's training camp at Prince William Forest. Thanks to my helpers Chris and Hannah, everything was done in 2 hours.

Cross-Training 55:00 [3]

Our friend Adria was hosting a spinning class at a gym in Rosslyn, so Alli and I went. It felt nice to sweat and work hard, and most of the positions didn't hurt my back too much.

Some sweating on a bike at the Library of Congress gym at lunchtime.

Skiing 1:40:00 [1]

Skiing with Alli and Barnacle on ungroomed trails and forest roads in about 5 inches of fresh snow that had fallen the night before. We went from the Timberline property towards White Grass and then up Forest Road 80 a long way before hitting Cabin Mountain trail, which we went down a little bit before turning around. Tough going climbing most of the way in the beginning, but the flats on top and the downhills coming back were a lot of fun - except for Barney, who had to race full beagle-speed to keep up with us.

Skiing 1:10:00 [1]

An afternoon skate ski with Alli and Barney. We made a wrong turn trying to ski from Timberline to White Grass, and ended up at a parking lot with nowhere to go, so had to backtrack the whole way, basically douple-poling uphill for a kilometer or so. Barney did well most of the way, though I did put him in a backpack for the last fifteen minutes or so.

Skiing 1:45:00 [2]

Skiing with the whole group (Alli, Hannah, Kevin, Chris) at White Grass on a beautiful, sunny day. We mostly stuck to the lower, flatter trails, which I think everyone appreciated. Really good conditions today - just the perfect winter day!

Skiing 1:00:00 [1]

We spent the weekend at White Grass in West Virginia, skiing and playing games. After spending Saturday morning learning Terra Mystica and staying out of the cold, some of us got out to ski in the afternoon. Hannah and I skated, while Chris classiced. It was very, very cold in the fields surrounding White Grass due to all the wind, but slightly better in the forest, which is where we headed. I spent most of my time shuttling between Chris and Hannah, trying to give some technique tips. Both of them improved a lot during the ski.

Skiing 1:15:00 [2]

A big post-wedding ski with Alli's family and my brother Greg at Carter's XC Trails. We were a really big group, and Alli and I mostly went back and forth among them, skiing with everyone a little bit. It had snowed the night before, and I convinced the owners to groom for us, which made the ski much more enjoyable. Great fun!

Skiing 40:00 [3]

I went out by myself on the wedding morning to get a little skiing in at Bethel Nordic Center, which is basically a golf course. Despite the lack of snow, they had managed to string together enough for a groomed, blazing-fast 6km loop, which I did a couple of times. It was very nice to get out before the wedding.

A ski with the whole family at Carter's XC Trails in Bethel, Maine. Not much snow to speak of, but good company.
