Running 1:24:05 [3] 11.73 mi (7:10 / mi)

Running with William and Kenny by the river. Started out feeling pretty crappy, but was running quite well by the end. Cold and rainy. Again, where is spring??

Saturday Apr 27, 2002 #

Soccer 1:40:00 [2]

A lackluster pick-up soccer game in the mud. Cold and windy today. Where is spring???

Thursday Apr 25, 2002 #

Soccer 1:00:00 [3]

An hour of indoor soccer after a failed effort to go to an O-map with Kenny and William. Stuck in traffic...

Running 20:00 [2] 2.67 mi (7:29 / mi)

Warm-up and cool-down for threshold run.

Running 19:37 [5] 3.1 mi (6:20 / mi)

Threshold run by the river to make up for missing the Park-O yesterday.
9:41 out, 9:56 back.

Running 47:24 [3] 6.5 mi (7:18 / mi)

River to Fresh Pond, around Fresh Pond and back. Had to skip the Park-O because of classes. Grrrr....

Running 36:04 [2] 4.8 mi (7:31 / mi)

To Harvard Bridge and back along the river. Very sore after the Billygoat. Ran with the Goat map, looking for the best skips. Decided that 6 may have been the best. I wonder if there is a good way to test it. Still, skipping 1 was really fun.

Orienteering 1:30:11 [3] 11.3 km (7:59 / km)

The Billygoat. Started off by skipping 1 with the rest of the gang, then quickly found that they were running too fast for me. Kenny and William disappeared after #3, and i stayed with Matthias after that. We were caught by Graeme, Sergey Zhuk, and some really fast Quantico guy (Jon Torrance?) and ran together, trading places for a while. I was at the tail end of the pack most of the time, just trying to hang on. Going to 14, decided that i had to stay with them there or lose the possibility of a 1-2-3-4 CSU finish we'd been hoping for. I pushed up the hill on the trail and caught Graeme and Jon leaving 14. Matthias was behind, and Sergey AWOL. Graeme and i took a different route choice from Jon (?) going into 15, and punched ahead of him. With Graeme to 16 and 17. After hitting the trail on the way to 18, i realize that Graeme hadn't punched 17 yet, and i had a chance to finish ahead of him. I almost blew my chance by standing a few yards from the finish dumbfounded, not seeing the last control...2nd place, 5 minutes behind Kenny.
We had to leave early because of specific commitments in Boston, and not as a snub to organizers. I thought it was a great Billygoat, and really enjoyed the course.

Soccer 2:00:00 [3]

Hadn't played soccer in far too long before today, and ended up playing much longer than i intended. Very sore afterwards, perfect right before the Billygoat.

Thursday Apr 18, 2002 #

Running 1:03:36 [3] 8.87 mi (7:10 / mi)

Evening run: down Brattle street to Fresh Pond, 2 loops around Fresh Pond, back along the river to the footbridge.

Wednesday Apr 17, 2002 #

Rollerblading 1:00:00 [2]

Setting and collecting controls for the Park-O in the 90-or-so degree weather. The park-O was a success, I thought. Mad props to Misha for the course design, especially the spectator control.

Running 45:45 [3] 6.3 mi (7:16 / mi)

Running on the river (Footbridge - N.Beacon street bridge and back) on a beautiful, sunny day while reading a National Geographic magazine.

Sunday Apr 14, 2002 #

Orienteering 1:33:27 [3] 9.72 km (9:37 / km)

Flying Pig Farsta. A pretty good race for me, with no major errors. Felt very tired for most of the race and a bit ridiculous climbing and sliding up and down the steep reentrants on all fours.

Saturday Apr 13, 2002 #

Orienteering 1:31:52 [3] 8.72 km (10:32 / km)

World Ranking Event and Classic race at Flying Pig. A pair of 5-minute mistakes early in the race... I just can't seem to manage a good, clean race so far this season. Lack of winter orienteering shows, as i am in pretty good (though not great) running shape, but keep making mistakes i wasn't making last fall.

Friday Apr 12, 2002 #

Orienteering 53:38 [4] 5.2 km (10:19 / km)

Flying Pig Sprint at Camp Whip-Poor-Will. Started ok, but made several mistakes totaling about 6 minutes....Very steep!

Wednesday Apr 10, 2002 #

Running 57:32 [3] 8.0 mi (7:11 / mi)

Running along the Charles, the Longfellow Bridge loop, with a map of last year's Long course champs in Ohio. Hopefully, i'll improve on my performance at West Point this week-end.

Note

Spent about 2 hours rollerblading around the Harvard campus, doing some field-checking and fixing minor things on the map for the Park-O. A beautiful day for this!

Tuesday Apr 9, 2002 #

Orienteering 20:35 [4] 3.37 km (6:06 / km)

Boston Park-O Race 1 at Pine Banks park. A good, fun race. 2nd place behind Will Hawkins.

Sunday Apr 7, 2002 #

Orienteering 1:44:19 [3] 11.22 km (9:18 / km)

West Point, Day 2. A better race than Day 1, but still a couple of significant errors. I did have enough good legs, however, to regain some faith in my orienteering and to have something to build on going into the Flying Pig week-end and, more importantly, into the Boston Park-O series.

Saturday Apr 6, 2002 #

Orienteering 2:00:01 [3] 9.53 km (12:36 / km)

West Point A-Meet, Day 1. A horrid run, with several mistakes larger than any i've made in a couple of years. I just couldn't get concentrated and didn't do the basic things i know how to do in an O-race. This race shook my confidence quite a bit and left me more in disbelief than anything else... The bright side is that it does count as 2 hours of O-training on attackpoint. :)
