Event: West Point

Hiking 4:00:00 [1]

A day hike in Big Basin State Park in California. DId not get to work out the two days before after getting sick during the barbecue we organized on wednesday night. Feeling somewhat better today. Beautiful woods, very steep hills. I like California.

Warm-up, cool-down for BAOC local meet.

Orienteering 17:10 [5] 3.0 km (5:43 / km) +60m 5:12 / km
shoes: Nike Pegasus '05

30-point sprint at a local BAOC meet. Start a minute behind Mikkel Conradi and spend the whole first half of the race trying to chase him down. A couple of small bobbles on my part made it difficult, but eventually i caught up and finished just ahead. Very nice course in a pretty area. Saw goats on a leash at the finish!!

Orienteering 25:35 [3] 3.2 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus '05

"Fog-O" course after the sprint. Well, it's beasically a window-O, involving a long leg across a lake that was "fogged out." Lots of fun, got slightly lost.

Speedskating 1:00:00 [2]

First day in California. My friend Marty took us to his speedskating practice and we got a nice little lesson and a chance to do intervals around a short track. Pretty cool - very different from the figure skating skills (don't ask!!) that i vaguely remember from when i was 6.

Fun run with the track guys on a gorgeous day. Need new running shoes - too many holes in these. I think i'll take it easy this week-end and stay home. Too much stuff to do, and too many week-ends away recently, with more ahead...

Running 15:00 [2] 1.67 mi (8:59 / mi)
shoes: VJ - Cleats

Warm-up for Flying Pig Long.

Orienteering race 1:31:43 [4] ***** 12.1 km (7:35 / km) +420m 6:28 / km
shoes: VJ - Cleats

Flying Pig Classic.
A nice, steady race for me with no major mistakes except a stupid route choice on 15, where I went straight but was too scared to go on the "white" side of the stream, not wanting to go out of bounds. Ended up stuck in the green for a while.
Otherwise, a decent race though my back was hurting on the uphills towards the end.
Qualified for WOC! (Though it would be cool if Brian, Kenny, Mikell all went. Hopefully next year...)

Saturday Apr 2, 2005 #

Running 20:00 [2] 2.22 mi (9:01 / mi)
shoes: VJ - Cleats

Warm-up in the rain for Flying Pig middle.

Orienteering race 48:05 [4] ***** 5.5 km (8:45 / km) +260m 7:04 / km
shoes: VJ - Cleats

Flying Pig Middle.
An awful race - had real trouble pushing up the hills - felt like I was sliding back tweo steps for every one forward. Made 2 ~2:40-min mistakes, on 2 and then on 12 after specifically telling myself to attack 12 carefully. Very unhappy with myself afterwards.

Friday Apr 1, 2005 #

Running 30:00 [2] 3.33 mi (9:01 / mi)
shoes: VJ - Cleats

Warm-up and cool-down for Flying Pig Sprint

Orienteering race 17:26 [5] ***** 2.7 km (6:27 / km)
shoes: VJ - Cleats

Flying Pig Sprint.
A decent race - had Dan Stoll in sight pretty early, but took a while to catch him due to poor route choices to 4 and 7. Then saw Sergey V and Kenny catching up, and had to work hard to stay away from them. Still, a solid start to the week-end.
