Note

Another day off. Spent most of the morning beating Portuegese guys in ping-pong for beer. Yum.

Wednesday Jul 30, 2003 #

Orienteering 1:17:23 [2] 7.74 km (10:00 / km)

Slow and confusing run through really difficult middle distance sample terrain - some of the hardest navigation i've ever had to do. The terrain featured many giant boulders and cliffs with hidden holes that catch your feet between them....Hard and slow.

Tuesday Jul 29, 2003 #

Running 15:00 [2] 1.76 mi (8:31 / mi)

Jogging around St.Gallen after sprint training.

Orienteering 14:17 [5] 2.65 km (5:23 / km)

A practice sprint race in St.Gallen in preparation for the WOC sprint on Tuesday. Felt much better than at the previous one in Richterswil - ran a tad slower and made far fewer mistakes (probably 50 seconds total - i can do better.) I have one more practice sprint in Bern on Friday. Then - rest, rest, rest.

Note

Day off!

Sunday Jul 27, 2003 #

Orienteering 1:27:25 [4] 9.3 km (9:24 / km) +370m 7:50 / km

Yuck. A really bad race, with far too many mistakes. I felt very tired, mentally and physically, and was really worried about the footing, with lots of logs and rocks buried under the tall grass. I need a day off.

Saturday Jul 26, 2003 #

Orienteering 33:57 [4] 3.6 km (9:26 / km) +160m 7:43 / km

A regional meet in the southeast of Switzerland. Ran HMiddle, as opposed to long, to get the approximate distance of the WOC middle qualifier. Was 2nd out of 40 - a decent race. One dude beat me by 37 seconds. Eric was 6th, 3min back.

Friday Jul 25, 2003 #

Orienteering 1:27:30 [3] 8.75 km (10:00 / km)

Two sessions on detailed alpine maps - one in the morning (about an hour), the second, short one, in the afternoon. Ran mostly with Eric in the morning, on a map with lots of huge boulders with deep holes in between. Fell into a couple of holes and ran into an electric fence. Yay.

Thursday Jul 24, 2003 #

Running 50:25 [3] 6.95 mi (7:15 / mi)

Was dragged out for a run near Beatrice's house on this rainy, misty day and ended up being really glad i ran! I went with Marc, and the trail run took us through some dark, wet, misty forest which was just beautiful in this weather, besides being incredibly steep for part of the way.

Note

Although nothing is set in stone, it appears that I am running the Middle Distance Qualifier race on the 8th, as well as the Sprint on the 5th.

Orienteering 1:25:30 [3] 9.5 km (9:00 / km)

Went to a map near Bern with Pavlina and Erin. Not the best terrain, not the best map, weird wooden sculptures in the forest. Strange day overall...

Tuesday Jul 22, 2003 #

Orienteering 1:39:24 [3] 11.04 km (9:00 / km)

Ran part of the course at the Swiss Classic Team Trials. Since I am not doing the Classic at WOC, I concentrated on the short legs, running them fast, and running the longer ones at an easier pace. I also took a shortcut, which had me climb up the steepest part of the hill, over an uncrossable cliff and fear for my life. Grrrrrr. Later on, came into a control with Carsten Jorgensen and was pleasantly surprised to watch him walk up the hill just in front of me. :)

Monday Jul 21, 2003 #

Running 39:48 [2] 4.97 mi (8:01 / mi)

Easy run in the park near Marc and Sandra's place just to get legs moving. Ran with Marc and Pavlina, had a nice conversation.

Sunday Jul 20, 2003 #

Running 30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

All the combined warm-ups and cool-downs of the day.

Orienteering 26:14 [4] 3.5 km (7:30 / km) +180m 5:58 / km

Swiss Team Trials for the middle distance - Race 1. A really good race for me - just 5:30 behind the winner (Marc Lauenstein!!!!!!! - go Marc!) and ahead of all the New Zealand team and all but one of the Belgian team. Happy. Twisted my ankle, though.

Orienteering 46:55 [4] 4.9 km (9:34 / km) +290m 7:23 / km

Race 2 in the heat. Had trouble concentrating and made large mistakes towards the end. But - Marc won again!!!!! So, some good news. And - i really like the terrain, which happens to be right next to the WOC Middle distance races.

Saturday Jul 19, 2003 #

Running 30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm-up/cool-down

Orienteering 19:51 [5] 2.5 km (7:56 / km)

Sprint race at Richterswil. Yuck!! Doing well early, but made a big mistake (2:00) and a couple more smaler ones for a total of about 3:40 in errors. Not happy at all.

Friday Jul 18, 2003 #

Orienteering 45:15 [3] 4.53 km (9:59 / km)

Easy training run on a map with Erin and Pavlina.

Running 5:00 [3]

Strides after orienteering - legs felt much better afterwards. Thanks Sergei for getting me into the habit of doing these!

Hiking 2:00:00 [1]

Hiking at Stockhorn with Erin and Pavlina. Climbed up over 500m, then took the loooooooong way down through gorgeous alpine meadows and forests and pastures, past cliffs and rocks and wildflowers and cows with bells and sheep and baby goats. Whole thing took 6 hours.

Thursday Jul 17, 2003 #

Orienteering 1:00:09 [3] 5.01 km (12:00 / km)

In Switzerland now. Training on a not-so-great map near Bern with Marc, Sandra, Erin, Pavlina.

Wednesday Jul 16, 2003 #

More alpine running with Erin, followed by swimming in a glacier lake.

Tuesday Jul 15, 2003 #

Running 50:00 [3] 6.25 mi (8:00 / mi)

Taking it eeeeeeeeasy this week. After doing a bunch of hiking at Chamonix, ran across the mountainside and then down to back to the city. Spectacular terrain and stunning views of glaciers and Mt.Blanc!

Sunday Jul 13, 2003 #

Biking 1:15:00 [3]

Biking at Alpe D'Huez to watch a stage of the Tour de France!!!!! Lots of fun. A huge party, with lots of fans everywhere. And we got to bike on the actual course.

Running 45:00 [3] 5.29 mi (8:30 / mi)

A run at Alp d'Huez with John Beard and Erin. Fun!

Friday Jul 11, 2003 #

Orienteering 1:30:51 [4] 12.25 km (7:25 / km)

Starting after 12pm, dead tired. Felt like crap entire way. The goal was to run out of 100 minutes. Yay.
Ended up 47th overall out of 94 or so - right in the middle....

Thursday Jul 10, 2003 #

Orienteering 1:24:17 [4] 13.06 km (6:27 / km)
