Thursday Aug 31

Running 25:38 [2]3.42 mi (7:29 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Trail Shoes
A "morning" run at around noon - still jet-lagged! Almost everything felt sore from last night's circuit training, but my knee felt better - maybe icing actually helps. Hamstring still pretty sore...
The club is having a 3000m time trial on a track tonight. I am very tempted to go run it, but am really not sure because of the hamstring... Any advice?

Running 45:00 [2]5.45 mi (8:15 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006
Ran from the clubhouse to the track to watch everyone run the 3000m time trial. It was fun to watch, and I wish I could have run, but my hamstring, as well a few people, told me that would be unwise. As for results, Mats led the way with 8:56, followed by Mattias Millinger, Ulf, and Rob at 8:58, 8:59, 9:00. Very impressive! The top girls (Annika Billstam and co.) ran around 11:05, which seemed pretty damn fast to me.
Afterwards, i dragged myself back to te clubhouse for the club barbecue, which was nice and fancy this year, with tableclothed tables set up outside on the lawn, and a full menu of green salad, potato salad, hot dogs, saft, and even marshmallows! Very nice evening.

Running 50:41 [2]6.34 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006
Running to the clubhouse with everyone during JSS and then back home.

Walking in the corridor of my building yesterday, i slipped and tweaked something that feels like a ligament around the knee. Great, just what i needed.

I landed in Arlanda on a beautiful Swedish morning, headed for Uppsala, got home (it really feels like home now!), collapsed exhausted into bed for a couple of hours, and dragged myself out to OK Linne's middle distance champs, my first race of the fall season. It was held in Lanna, on a small map map with start and finish next to a pretty lake, and the course involved a map change halfway through. I was thoroughly jet-lagged and so could not run extremely fast, but was happy to be in Swedish woods again and to not have to face the hills of Switzerland and Denmark or the altitude of Wyoming and Colorado. I made a few small mistakes (3 min total for the course), but in general was pleased with the run and avoided errors that were too big. I ended up 15th out of 26, which doesn't sound good, but i was about 25% back, which i was pleased with. And now i can start comparing my results with equivalent races a year ago and see if there is any progress. At the club middle distance champs last year, i was 37.7% back of the winner, without any of the Troengs running. So i can be pleased. It was also cool seeing Suzanne running for Linne! We also have a new Bulgarian girl, Irina, this year, and also some Japanese guy is staying here for a while. He ran 70 minutes for our course, but won the finish split. :)

Sunday Aug 27

Running 45:05 [2]5.3 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: 2006 VJ Falcons
A gloomy and rainy but not unpleasant morning on Surebridge in Harriman. I hadn't been there in a long time, so it felt so nice to orienteer on the good old WOC '93 maps again. I ran on trails to the Northern part of the map and then did an old middle distance course from one of Alexei's junior camps there. Breuaitful woods, fast running, first signs of fall colors, and not a soul to be seen. Fantastic - i am having fun orienteering again!!

Saturday Aug 26

Running 44:55 [2]5.61 mi (8:01 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006
Morning run with Kat in Forest Park after Greg was not to be awaken. I followed Kat around as she picked trails to follow randomly and tried (mostly successfully) to avoid going in circles. :)

Monday Aug 21

Hiking 1:00:00 [3]
Climbing Mt.Princeton (14197') with Kat and feet. I would happily have put this down as more than an hour of training, as it felt like hard work most of the way up, but feet only put down an hour... It was fun, but i really felt the altitude towards the top and had to stop a bunch of time to catch my breath. Also, it wasn;t the easiest trail to follow, with lots of rock to scramble over and mini-summits to go up and down on the ridge before getting to the main summit. Still, it was a lot of fun, and seeing a pack of mountan goats on the road when we came down was a nice bonus!

US Champs day 2 at Buena Vista.
One of the most enjoyable courses I've run in the US in a long time. Very challenging, but not unfairly; good visibility, but not good enough to make orienteering trivial; and great course setting.
I didn't have a perfect run, and could have been about 4-5 minutes faster, but i avoided major mistakes, which were easy to make here, and ended up 4th on the day and overall, behind Swampfox, Eric, and Will, who all had impressive runs. Gotta say, though, i am tired. It's been a long summer of orienteering, and i am ready for a break. I think next summer i will cut down on the number of races i do: i've run exactly 20 in July and August, and that seems like a real high number right now.
An awesome run by Kat on red (2nd in F21!!) completed this fine day.
Hiking 10:00 [3]
Climbing up the Great Dune at Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. Parts of the dunes were covered with hail, which made for some spectacular scenery!!! Climbing up took about 40 minutes, down - a lot less, and included rolling down a couple dozen meters. Kat, Will, and i had a great time!

US Champs Day 1 at Buena Vista.
A so-so run - more mistakes than i should have made on a not-too-challenging course, including 2:45 lost on number 11. Also, not a great physical effort as i didn't feel very motivated at the start and failed to attack the course. The result - 8th place, over 11 minutes behind an impressive Swampfox! Surely, living at altitude helps, but he still kicked our butts. If that wasn't enough of a wake-up call, then finding myself behind Greg in the results was! These 40+ year-olds are getting fast!!!

Orienteering 30:00 [1]
Map hiking around the model event.
Went white-water rafint afterwards with Kat and Anna. Cold, wet, and fun!

Middle distance A-meet day First with the Most in Wyoming. Legs felt tired after climbing The Wall during the relay the day before, but seeing a fine elk stampede at the start gave me some inspiration, and so i took off pretty fast. I ran a very clean race, with just a couple of bobbles, but just didn't have the legs to beat Mook or John F., neither of whom had raced the relay (it's a handy excuse, at least...) Anyway, a fun day and a good result, followed by a spectacular drive down to Buena Vista through the valleys and mountain passes of Wyoming and Colorado.

Crystal Relays at the 1000-day.
Team CSU: Ross (1st) - PG (1st) - Kat (making her debut in a CSU shirt - also 1st) - Boris (1st).
Everyone ran well, and i was handed a huge lead and just needed to run safe to make sure i held it. I took the safest route choices i could and ran a virtually clean race, but was still very tired on the hills and struggled to even walk up The Wall, a steep ~50m near-vertical climb near the end of the course.

Tuesday Aug 15

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]1.18 mi (8:28 / mi)

Before the Team Fundraiser sprint. The cooldown consisted of three hours or so of prairie golf with Clem. I shot 60 for 9 holes, a bit worse than Peter Goodwin's score of 32...

US Team Fundraiser Sprint.
Worked the start for a while, then went a ran the course. Was doing ok until making a parallel error at 8 and losing a full minute there. Ended up 3rd behind Eric and John F. Definitely did not have the speed to match Eric's time on the day.
Afterwards, got to spectate and referee the Senior-Junior Team challenge, organized by Peter as an awesome fundraiser. Despite my best attempts as the referee, the Junior Team snatched victory from the jaws of Eric at the very last moment...

Monday Aug 14

Event: US Night Champs

Before the Night-O champs, trying out the lamp.
Orienteering race 1:55:00 [3]11 km (10:27 / km)

US Night-O Champs.
Not the most pleasant experience. Messed up the first control badly, then picked up the place, ran well for a while, then had my lamp run out of juice and leave me in complete darkness in the middle of a pretty dense aspen grove a couple of km away from the finish. Ended up climbing some hill to spot the lights of the finish and stumbling blindly towards the lights for a while and finally making it back, cold, hungry, and pissed off at myself for not having a back-uo light.

Sunday Aug 13

Running 21:50 [2]2.65 mi (8:14 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2006
Easy morning jog from the Olafsens' (and Erin Nielsen's) house in Sandwich down the road past the field the wedding was in. Beautiful morning. Before going for the run, I collected the rest of the controls from yesterday's orienteering course set on the Olafsen property by Daddy-O.

Orienteering 13:52 [3]1.06 km (13:05 / km)
shoes: Asics 2006
Running the orienteering course set by Daddy-O at Erin's wedding in the afternoon. This was set on the Olafsens' property, on a map surveyed by the bride and groom and updated by Daddy-O. Lots of fun, though i made a ton of mistakes on the 1:2000 map and got soundly beaten by the new Mrs.Nielsen, who covered the course in 9:28!! Well, i shouldn't take victory away from the young bride on her wedding day, right? :)

Friday Aug 11

Running race 13:33 [5]2.3 mi (5:54 / mi) vdot: 54.0
shoes: Asics 2006
Running the 3rd leg of the Sandwich Old Home Week Triathlon. My team was made up by Steve Olafsen at the very last minute and consisted of a Danish guy named Lars, who is a friend of Kristoffer's family; a girl named Devin, who is friends with Greta Olafsen, and myself to do the running after they handled the 50 or so meter swim and the 3-mile bike ride. I ran my leg well, feeling pretty fast, and picked up a bunch of places, ending up in 6th overall, and 1st team co-ed. We got blue ribbons. :)

Test-running the H18E course for Linne's national competition this weekend. Felt nice to be back in Swedish woods!!! Orienteered reasonably well, but got tired and my hamstring started hurting towards the end (it's been hurting again since the WOC sprint or so). Off to the States tomorrow, first to Erin's wedding and then the 1000-day.

WOC Relay, leg 2.
Eric ran an excellent lead-off leg and handed off to me in 23rd spot, ahead of Australia, Spain, Belgium, Belarus, Canada, Japan, Ireland, New Zealand and a bunch of others. I promptly threw away whatever advantage we had, simply unable to keep up with some of the guys who went by (Shep, Roger Casal, Karl Dravitzki) and not helping my cause with jittery orienteering in the first half of the course and a big 2+ minute mistake right after the spectator control. I calmed down a bit after that and ran reasonably well, though still not fast enough, but made another mistake near the end and got caught by Wil Smith, who was not running any faster than me, but was simply orienteering cleaner.
All in all, a mediocre run, both physically and technically. On the other hand, we ended up 28th, which is right around where I thought we'd be before the start. And it was great to see our girls come in 17th - a fantastic race by all three of them!!

WOC Sprint qualifier. A good start on some confusing controls through a stadium - did not start too fast, but picked good route choices and ran pretty well for the first few legs. Then - a long leg into the amusement park, where i lost concentration momentarily close to the control and ended up making a big mistake - 30-40 seconds, i think. Went better after that, but coming out of the amusement park, i think i picked a pretty bad route on the long leg towards the finish arena and lost some more time, though unsure how much. Finished pretty well and ended up 20th (after Troy being reinstated - i can't believe they'd reinstate a mispunch, but whatever), 37 seconds from the final, much like last year. A clean race would probably have gotten me in, but i am still fairly pleased and glad to follow up the middle distance disaster with a solid run.
Our girls were amazing, all of them, and i am excited about cheering for Hilly and Sam in the final a few hours from now. Woohoo!!!!! Oh, and Eric is right here in the computer lab in good spirits, though possibly with a bit of brain damage. :)
C • BRAVO! 2

All right, time to end the sillyness.
