| Orienteering training with Kat on central Lunsen. We took the club car and drove down there, and then an exercises similar to what Jagge recommended to me a while ago: I take a streamer and run hard to a control and hang the streamer. Kat starts 30 seconds after me and runs hard to the control, too. In order not to have to wait long, I did short little butterfly loops centered at the streamered control. This felt like really good training, especially because of the change of pace between the long legs to the streamered control and the short, technical legs in the butterfly loops. Also, the pressure of having Kat chasing me down and needing to hang the streamer right made me more conscientious about my orienteering than I might otherwise be on a long run. Both Kat and I orienteered well - very few mistakes. I was once again impressed with Kat. After about an hour, she ran back and I ran a few more km and then started getting tired and losing focus a bit. It's very hard to navigate cleanly when tired, especially in a place like Lunsen, so that's something I'd like to work on some more this winter. | ||

| I can think of no better way to spend this sunny, chilly Friday than orienteering on the best, most technical part of Lunsen with Kat. We got a ride down there with Mats, who was coaching Albin, and ran a course, with Kat navigating and telling me what she was planning and which features she was checking off. It went well: Kat orienteered a lot more confidently and better than the last time we ran together, which was probably in Switzerland this summer. This was really fun today, and I enjoyed being back in the woods for the first time in over a week. The ankle felt fine with the brace on it. | ||

| A nice long road/trail run with Mats, Micke, Bjorn, and Annika Billstam on a lovely, sunny winter morning. We first ran east to Kungsangsbridge, then south along the river down to Sunersta, along the lake for a while, then up through Gottsunda gipen and then along Gula stigen past Hammer's old house up to Angstroms and then home.
Saw a bunch of people we knew along the way - Uppsala is a small town. As for PG's daily At One With Nature wildlife watch, we saw a cat being walked around on a leash, which I thought looked pretty funny.

| Note | ||
| During the last few night-O's, I noticed that one of the things that lead me to lose a lot of time is not being able to quickly pinpoint where I am on the map when I glance down on it. Since in night-O, one can only afford very quick glances before running into a tree or a wild Swede, this means that I often look down at my map and get no information from it in that one glance - all I manage to do is find where I am, and by then it's time to look up again. I understand that thumbing works pretty well, but it is far from perfect. So, does anyone know some good way to practice quickly finding your location on the map? What I have in mind is some kind of armchair-O exercise I can do for this. Thanks! | ||

| Intervals on the stair machine at the gym. I was planning on doing intervals on trails today (hoped to run the Stadsskogen lit track), but the ankle is still sore, so I am staying away from hard running on trails or in the woods for a couple more days.
Anyway, I did 3x10 minutes, and this felt really hard. I was sweating buckets the entire time. Lovely scene, I'm sure. The gym was full of Linne orienteers tonight, doing everything from gympa to treadmill intervals.

| A nice long afternoon run with Micke on roads and trails. We ran on the big trails all the way through Nasten, came out past Uppsala Nas to Lurbo bridge and then up through the city, past the castle and cathedral and back home. Had a nice chat on the way, too, discussing goals for the upcoming season and for our respective careers. Micke (one of Sweden's best juniors two years ago, now a promising young senior, with a 7th place in the Swedish night champs) is hoping to make the Swedish WOC team in 2009 and be on the podium at WOC in 2011. Ambitious goals, but I suppose you have to aim high if you want to end up there! I told him my ambition is merely to be in the top 30 at WOC someday. | ||

| Wednesday Night-O at Vattholma, running the very courses Rob and I set. You'd think that running your own course would be easy. Oh no, not here! I felt very tired right from the start and didn't concentrate well, which is punished severely in this vague area, where it is very easy to drift off your bearing. Additionally, the woods are very rough: both rocky and full of freshly cut down tree branches on the ground, meaning that running took up even more of the concentration that I didn't have. Anyway, I ended up being the only one to DNF the long course, which was pretty embarrassing, but i guess these days happen. On the bright side, Kat ran well on the short course!

| This has been a bad season of Tuesday nights for me so far. After biking over to the clubhouse in the snow and getting changed just in time for this Tuesday run, we realized that Kat's lamp didn't work. At all. We later realized that the battery had been completely rusted through, probably from being left wet in a bag for too long. Gotta buy a new one... I ended up giving Kat my lamp and then racing with her to the start, getting there just in time for her to run with the pack. I decided to do my own thing and run around the Norby lit track, but quickly got bored. Instead, I decided to run intervals: 3x2.5km with 2 minutes rest. Wanted to run them at 10 minutes each, ended up doing 9:50, 10:06, 9:58. | ||

| Backbana. Some days you have it, and some days you don't. Today fell into the latter category. Right from the start my legs felt really heavy, and i didn't have much energy - possibly because of skipping dinner last night. I struggled through a lap of backbana with Jan Troeng, Pal Skogtjarn, and Rob (as we started, i thought to myself: what business do i have training with these guys??? Two Swedish B-team members, and the 24th best middle distance runner from WOC! Somehow, i didn't feel like i belonged. But i suppose that's something i really like about our club - even the very best runners are very welcoming and happy to train with the likes of me. Pretty cool.) The ankle brace started giving me a blister on the inside of my foot on the downhills, i took it off after one lap, tried starting a second one, but just felt pretty weak and decided to stop. I felt lame doing it, especially as it was a pleasure to be out on this fine sunny, crispy winter day, but i don't think it's wise to be running up and down very steep hills with bad footing with a crappy ankle after taking the brace off... | ||

The race was a mass-start with two map exchanges, one at the first control. To get to the first control, you had to use the mirro image of the real map, which sent people running in all different directions. After this, the race settled down, and I found myself in the lead pack with Tomas Stenstrom, Jan Troeng, Ulrik Imberg, and Bjorn Olovsson. Jan and Tomas pulled away on the last loop, and Ulrik and I got by Bjorn when he made a mistake. I ended up 3rd, about 2:30 down on Jan's winning time, and received a big bag of candy as a prize. Now i am eating it. Edit: results are now up at http://www.ridefelt.se/vinterrejset/2006/resultat....

| Jagge, you jinxed me!
About fifteen minutes into tonight's club training run, I jumped off a small cliff and went over hard on my right ankle. I rolled around in pain for a bit, then got up, walked a couple of hundred meters and then decided to keep going. It was a really fun course, a nice night, good company, and i really did not want to quit and go back. So the combination of adrenaline and cold swamp water kept me going for most of the course, until we got to a candle-lit area inhabited by Santa, Lucia, and a guy in what looked like a Klansman outfit serving us much needed warm glogg and gingerbread cookies. During this welcome break, my ankle stiffened up, and i could just manage a jog back home. Bad news. And just when i was starting to finally feel healthy and strong again... It's the worst an ankle of mine has looked since a day in the summer of 2000 when the left one looked like this: http://www.geocities.com/bgranovskiy/images/ankle....

| OUOC/CUOC training camp in the Lake District. We stayed at a nice, cozy youth hostel in Coniston with a group of about 20 orienteers of varying ability, from relative newcomers to the sport to the likes of Joe Mercer and Ruth Holmes, British JWOC runners.
The first day of training was on Holme Fell, the most physical and hilliest map of the week. The map is at http://www.geocities.com/bgranovskiy2/lakes1_06121... | SYO National Event / Senior Home International at Burbage Moor, near Sheffield.
The Senior Home International is the competition between England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, and they had their starts like two hours before us, so I didn't get to see them run. When we got there, the wind was blowing at about 60 mph, which made the map pretty useful as a sail. Other than that, the moor was a pretty physical place to orienteer with long stretches of tall heather making running difficult. I started reasonable well, despite twisting an ankle in the starting block, and caught a couple of guys early on. A couple of legs in the middle, 8-9 and 9-10, took forever - just a slog through the heather, then a few legs through actual forest followed by more heather. Running reasonably well until a big mistake on 19, where I ran less then five meters from the control three times, but never saw the small cliff it was one. Finally got it after relocating three times (>5 minutes) and, very tired by then, dragged myself around the rest of the course. Ended up 19th in elite, 18 minutes back of Alastair Buckley, who won. | Running the H21 course from the Oxford street race on a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning. A fun course, and a great way to see Oxford. Highlights included crossing over a bridge that was completely underwater and running in knee-deep water for about 50 meters; getting stuck inside one of the colleges; and being kicked out of an underground garage that I was trying to get through.
This was really enjoyable, and makes me want to do more street races. Venice next year? Tomorrow we are headed north for a national event (Senior Home International) near Sheffield followed by a few days of training in the Lakes District. Probably no internet up there, so no updates for a few days.

| A run around University Parks in Oxford, first three loops with Kat, then two more by myself. Nice to run in just one layer of clothes for a change! | ||
