Note

Have been lazing about in NYC during the holiday week - since I am not really training for anything, there is nothing wrong with a training break. Skiing was so much fun in Lake Placid, though, that I am almost (*almost*) sad to be skipping out on most of winter this year.

Sunday Dec 27, 2009 #

T.rex training 30:00 [1]

Climbing at Brooklyn Boulders with Jesse, Peter, and Tim.

Saturday Dec 26, 2009 #

Skiing 2:15:00 [2]

Skating from the Cascade XC Center up to the Olympic trails at Lake Placid. Started out with Mr.Balter and Mr.Speedy, then alone for a portion of the Porter Mt. loops, then some more with Kat and Kseniya. Drove to NYC in the pouring rain in the evening after an awesome vacation in Lake Placid. Nothing beats skiing on good snow. It was just so great.

Friday Dec 25, 2009 #

Skiing 2:00:00 [2]

Beautiful day of skiing on the Olympic trails. Skied the long Porter Mountain loop by myself and then a shorter loop with Kat.

Thursday Dec 24, 2009 #

Skiing 2:00:00 intensity: (1:30:00 @1) + (30:00 @2)

Skiing at Lake Placid, first classic with Kat, then skating a bit faster by myself.

Wednesday Dec 23, 2009 #

Skiing 2:00:00 [3]

At the Olympic center in Lake Placid. Snowing the whole time, so the going was tough, but nice trails in a beautiful place.

Speedskating 10:00 [1]

Ice skating on the Olympic oval at Lake Placid. A bit less than an hour total, but logging as 10 minutes.

Monday Dec 21, 2009 #

3 PM

Running 1:15:22 [2] 7.92 mi (9:31 / mi)
shoes: Blue Asics 2009

With feet at East Rock in about 6-8 inches of snow. Felt hard, but was a good workout. Beautiful sunset view off the top.

Sunday Dec 20, 2009 #

Skiing 1:45:00 [1]

Skiing at Winding Trails in Farmington, CT, with a nice crowd of Kat, feet, Marie, TheStud, and MattiasTheNewSwede. Great snow and a very nice place, but unfortunately the tracks were virtually non-existent, as we were skiing late in the day, and lots of people had gone over, through, and next to them. Still, it was great to get out and do some skiing.

Note
weight:172lbs

1.19G may be a new post-college record for me. (Obviously, there was a time when I weighed <<1G.)

T.rex training 30:00 [1]

Climbing with Kat at Prime Climb after her exams. Tired.

Thursday Dec 17, 2009 #

Cross-Training 10:00 [2]

Warm-up at the gym

T.rex training 30:00 [1]

Mostly core and upper body

Soccer 2:15:00 [3]

Fewer people today, so pretty much non-stop running with no subs. Totally wasted by the end, running home was a struggle. Great fun though.
5 PM

Running 20:00 [2] 3.33 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Blue Asics 2009

To/from gym

Wednesday Dec 16, 2009 #

7 PM

Running 1:40:32 [2] 17.14 km (5:52 / km)

Night run at West Rock with Mattias. Very slow on the way out, more normal on the way back. It was a lot of fun to run with him. I definitely hope we have hooked one more New Haven orienteer now.

Tuesday Dec 15, 2009 #

6 PM

Running 19:30 [2] 3.55 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: Rob's shoes

To/from gym

Soccer 2:00:00 [3]

Another pick-up soccer game at Payne Whitney. Really fun tonight - slightly fewer people, so a lot less subbing and a lot more running. Totally beat afterwards.

Sunday Dec 13, 2009 #

Note

This, sadly, is my biggest training week since February.
12 PM

Orienteering 1:14:34 [3] ***** 9.76 km (7:38 / km)
spiked:14/18c shoes: 2009 VJ Falcons

Fog-O training designed by Jagge on Ansoina. Marie, cavadura, and Mattias "Our New Swede" Gustavsson came along for training in the freezing rain and a couple of inches of snow on the ground. Had trouble getting going and got confused on the first couple of controls, but then got into it and ran well after #4 with the exception of running to 15 instead of 8 by accident and then going back to 8. Great training, really made me focus on being more precise with compass and on looking as far ahead as I could. I think that, once I got the hang of it, this actually helped me be faster and smoother, as I normally read a lot more details on the map than what I was doing today.
It was a bit spooky being out in the forest today with all the deer blood on the snow from the hunters...

The new Garmin Transfer feature rocks. Thanks Kenny!

Running 5:00 [2] 0.83 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: 2009 VJ Falcons

Jogging to the start.

Saturday Dec 12, 2009 #

Running 1:43:50 [2] 19.0 km (5:28 / km)
shoes: Blue Asics 2009

Went to West Rock with Kat hoping to do a tempo run, but forgot about all the snow and ice. Had to change plans and do a long run instead. Rather enjoyed it today - beautiful sunny day and crispy snow with occasional ice patches. Cold. Ran north from Wintergreen Lake as far north as the red trail goes, then back south all the way to Stone Street and back home through the ghetto.

T.rex training 30:00 [1]

If this continues, I might have to make up a new category and color for climbing. Went to Prime Climb in Wallingford - a bigger and nicer gym than CT Rock Gym in New Haven. Nearly had the place to ourselves. Climbed around on a few 5.5s, 5.6s, and 5.7s with varied success and spent the rest of the time bouldering. Bouldering turns out to be more fun for me since my fear of heights doesn't come in to play here. Nice.
A lot of fun, all in all, more than I would have expected. My main problem with climbing is that you are there for like three hours but really only climb for no more than half an hour.

Thursday Dec 10, 2009 #

Soccer 2:00:00 [1]

Pick-up soccer with lots of Yale grad students at the Payne Whitney. I played pretty badly, mostly because I am not very good. Also, I should get soccer shoes. But it was lots of fun and a lot of running around. Actually played for slightly over 3 hours, so logging 2 seems reasonable.

Running 19:15 [2] 3.5 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: Rob's shoes

To/from gym

Wednesday Dec 9, 2009 #

T.rex training 25:00 [1]

Strength at home and at the gym. Getting stronger.

Cross-Training 40:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (10:00 @3)

Elliptical at the gym before going to hang out with some Swedes and eat cinnamon buns. Yum.

Tuesday Dec 8, 2009 #

Note

Is no one disturbed by the fact that this exists?

Running 1:43:07 [2] 19.1 km (5:24 / km)
shoes: Fall 2009 VJ Falcons

Night run at West Rock with Marie and in the beginning with Kat. Nice run, nice company.

Monday Dec 7, 2009 #

Running 19:34 [2] 3.56 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: Rob's shoes

To and from the gym.

Cross-Training 20:00 [2]

Warm-up and cool-down at the gym

Running 12:14 [5] 2.5 km (4:54 / km) +360m 2:51 / km
shoes: Rob's shoes

Last week was a lost cause, but this is a new battle. Did stairs at the Payne Whitney again and saw the effects of basically not training the last five days: five of the six intervals were faster than any I'd done before. Still, I was completely dead by the end. Might try to move up to 8 next week, but don't know if I can handle it.

Sunday Dec 6, 2009 #

T.rex training 20:00 [1]

Got Kat climbing stuff for her birthday and then took her to the CT Rock Gym to try it out. A lot of fun, but no time left for orienteering. :(

Saturday Dec 5, 2009 #

Cross-Training 30:00 [2]

Cross-training at the hotel gym before hitting the road again. Level 16 hills.
Take that j-man.

Thursday Dec 3, 2009 #

Cross-Training 55:00 intensity: (45:00 @2) + (10:00 @3)

Some cross-training at the hotel gym in Bloomington is all I had time or energy for today. Not very satisfying, but better than nothing.

T.rex training 10:00 [1]

Some strength after the cross-training.

Tuesday Dec 1, 2009 #

Running 1:37:30 [2] 11.47 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: Blue Asics 2009

Two perimeter laps of East Rock with some add-ons on the second lap. Saw a large bird of prey [Edit: red-tailed hawk]. Nice and sunny out, short sleeves would have been fine.
