Orienteering 58:37 [3] 6.3 km (9:18 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra

Pre-New Year's training at Eagle Rock in New Jersey with Ali, Sergei, and Greg. We ran an old red course, starting together and mostly staying together, with people splitting off and coming back together due to different route choices. Good training in deep, soft snow (up to 2ft in places) reminded me of Swedish winters. Lots of fun.

Running 50:00 intensity: (34:00 @2) + (16:00 @4) 5.56 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: 2010 Asics

Hill intervals in Fort Tryon Park near the Cloisters. Snowy and sunny and doggy out. Gorgeous views of the Hudson and the snowed-over cliffs of the Palisades on the warm-up.
Intervals: 4:03, 3:58, 3:59, 4:00

Note

Reached 30 hours for December. Sadly, this is my biggest training month this year. Sad, when, for example, in 2007, this would have been my second-smallest month. Still, 30 was the goal for this month, and you have to start somewhere. The plan for January is 30 again, and then 35 for February. We'll see how it's going after that.

Running 48:06 [2] 4.81 mi (10:00 / mi)
weight:184lbs shoes: 2010 Asics

A morning run with Becks around the neighborhood. Most of the time was spent on plowed sidewalks, with occasional forays into deeper snow. Comments on the size of shorts-wearing feet's prefrontal cortex were made.

Monday Dec 27, 2010 #

Running 32:00 [2] 3.2 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: 2010 Asics

After finally making it back to New Haven around noon today, I absolutely had to go out for a quick run in the sunshine and the brilliant snow. Felt like a bit less than a foot deep around the base of East Rock.

Sunday Dec 26, 2010 #

Note

Didn't quite make it home. The snowstorm got us as we were going through the Berkshires. After an hour of going at 35 mph, gave up and stopped at a motel in Lee, MA.

Skiing 1:30:00 [1]

Totally dead today. Z-man and I tried skiing the Porter Mountain loops, but both gave up after the first few hills. Stuck to the flats after that and had a more fun time. Finished off by trying shooting at the biathlon range. Really fun, but they wouldn't let me ski around with the rifle.
All in all, a great several days of skiing with the Goats, who really feel like family to me.

Skiing 2:00:50 intensity: (1:43:00 @1) + (17:50 @5)

Morning skate from the Cascade ski lodge. Skied over to the Mt.Van Hoe trails and then did a time trial with Sergei, Greg, and Vadim. We did two laps of the 2.6km Flatlander trail, with a mass start. I skied with Sergei the entire time, him in the front the first lap and me the second. I finished just ahead, but had the feeling that he didn't really go all out. I did, on the other hand, and felt pretty shattered the rest of the way.

Skiing 1:00:00 [2]

In the evening, Greg and I drove over to the Olympic ski center and did some classic skiing with headlamps. I love skiing at night! There is something about the little circle of light you create for yourself and the myriad sparkling snowflakes that is almost magical. Great night!
Then went back and won some $$$ in preference.

Skiing 2:00:00 intensity: (1:15:00 @1) + (45:00 @2)

Classic skiing at Lake Placid. Stayed on the Cascade ski trails with Kat for the first hour, and then did some more by myself, going over to the Mt.Van Hoe trails. Felt pretty tired on the way back, but the technique was starting to feel half-decent.

Skiing 1:35:00 [2]

As we sat down to lunch, the Goats arrived. Had to finish lunch quickly and get ready to skate. Went out with GregBalter, z-man, and speedy. We skied over to the lodge at Mt.Van Hoe and then did some loops there, including huffing and puffing to stay with Sergei on the climb up the East Mt. trail. A really nice session, though I'd had enough skiing by the end of the afternoon.

Thursday Dec 23, 2010 #

Skiing 2:00:00 [1]

Skiing! Drove up to Lake Placid with Kat and her family. Woke up in the morning to about 8 inches of fresh snow. I started with classicing and did a couple of loops with Kat and her brother Aleksey before setting off on my own. Ended up skiing some trails that hadn't been groomed, which made for some slow going. Then went out again with Kat, skating and working on her form. A bunch of no-pole, plus some V2 and V1 drills. Kat is getting better!
A great first day of skiing for the season, and I was really happy with me new skis!

11 AM

Running 44:43 [2] 5.24 mi (8:32 / mi) +202m 7:38 / mi
shoes: 2010 Asics

Running from Kat's parents' house through Fort Tryon Park and Inwood Park. Inwood Park is bigger than I thought it was and has plenty of forest and trails. Still no Forest Park, but not a bad start.

Being in New York is not helping my weight loss plans. Off to Lake Placid tomorrow.

Sunday Dec 19, 2010 #

Orienteering 1:11:30 [1] 4.5 km (15:53 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra

Exploring Lynn Woods with Ross and scouting some possible arena locations with Ed. I drew a control picking course to explore the terrain and check out a lot of features and vegetation. Ross and I ran it together, picking often picking different routes and discussing the usability of terrain for good courses. It was green.

The whole day felt Clem-esque, as I began in New Haven, drove to Boston for orienteering and lunch, then drove to NYC for the evening.

10 AM

Running 1:33:02 [3] 8.5 mi (10:57 / mi) +184m 10:15 / mi
weight:184lbs shoes: 2010 Asics

Morning tour of Westwoods Trails with Becks (at first) and feet. Beautiful morning and a great place to run. I really liked all the crazy rocks and the passages through them. Too bad I felt really weak. It was a strange feeling - my heart rate got high on the short uphills and took forever to get back down.
Too much too soon?

Note

Kat's surprise gift for me hurt me.

Running 55:28 intensity: (17:30 @1) + (25:00 @2) + (12:58 @5) 11.09 km (5:00 / km)
weight:184lbs shoes: Rob's shoes

According to my new training plan, today had to be long intervals or a threshold run. Since I hadn't done much speedwork in a while, I thought I'd start with a low-volume session. I did 3x1200m on the indoor track at Payne Whitney gym with 2:30 rest. My dream was to run them at 4:04-4:08 pace, my goal was 4:10-4:12, the reality was

4:18
4:17
4:23

Wow. Saying that WOC-team-qualifying form is a long way away is a massive understatement, but I guess you have to start somewhere. Very disappointed.

Nice to chat with Becky at the gym afterwards and to hoist my wife up to the pull-up bar a couple of times.

Note
weight:182lbs (rest day)

Sore and achy this morning, but feel like I have finally started training again. Time to set some goals for 2011. The goal for the first half of the year is clear: stay relatively injury-free and qualify for the 2011 US WOC Team. Given my present shape (awful) and the current level of competition (much improved over previous years), this will be really tough, but doable if I manage to train consistently through the winter and spring.

Also, my flag counter shows hits from Mali and Mauritania. Really?

Running 1:39:49 [2] 10.43 mi (9:34 / mi) +181m 9:05 / mi
weight:184lbs shoes: VJ Supra

Nice evening run with Becky, Anne-Louise, Marie, and Mattias. Started at Lake Wintergreen, ran back to Mike and Marie's house where Becky and Anne-Louise left us. Then back to Lake Wintergreen and further north for a while. Cold, with most of the puddles frozen. Enjoyable run, speaking Swedish most of the time (quite poorly for my part.)

To and from the gym. Really cold, but no snow. Bah.

Played some 4 on 4 in the gym. Really fun! Why haven't I played more this fall??

Running 1:10:23 [2] 8.28 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: 2010 Asics

Used my inferior prefrontal cortex to determine that the best time to run was in the middle of the rainstorm. Did half an hour around East Rock, then collected Becks and did another half-hour through the ghetto before running home from Becks' place.

T.rex training 15:00 [1]

Some arms and core stuff at the hotel's fitness room after the run.
4 PM

Running 1:06:53 [2] 7.98 mi (8:23 / mi) +165m 7:53 / mi
shoes: 2010 Asics

An exploration run in Tempe. Started from my hotel just before dusk and ran north across the lake (yes, apparently Phoenix has a lake). Ended up in some deserty park next to the Phoenix Zoo, with scattered saguaro all around. Ran to something called Hunt's Tomb and then Hole in the Rock, which was a small arch pretty high up in the red rocks. I happened to be there right at sunset. It was really bright red, and the surrounding mountains were lovely. Then ran back in the dark - less fun.

Running 35:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (10:00 @5) 4.5 mi (7:47 / mi)
shoes: 2010 Asics

Treadmill at the hotel in Phoenix again. 10x1 minute hard to make it less boring. Have been debugging code all week, with minimal success. Frustrating.

Running 40:00 intensity: (24:00 @2) + (16:00 @4) 5.0 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: 2010 Asics

4x4 minutes at 6:50/mile and 3% incline with 2 minutes rest at 10:00/mile on a treadmill at the hotel in Phoenix in the morning. I hate treadmills, but at least this one had a tv showing Reno 911, which was amusing.

Note

More on the weekend's CSU SuperStars later, but just had to comment that my only lasting injury from the weekend is a gash on the inside of my mouth that occurred during dinner.

Running 30:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (5:00 @4) 3.87 mi (7:45 / mi)

On a treadmill at the hotel in Phoenix, just after getting in. The 77F outside is a nice change from yesterday's frigid morning in Amherst.

Running 30:00 [2]

Warm-up, cool-down and collecting some streamers with Ross after the sprint.
7 AM

Orienteering 20:02 [5] 4.2 km (4:46 / km) +66m 4:25 / km
shoes: 2010 Asics

CSU SuperStars Sprint at UMass Amherst, set by Alex.

Started out well, feeling reasonably springy. I had Neil, who had started 1 minute before me, in sight on the way to #4 and was gradually closing on him. Got by him at 10 when he didn't see the streamer and promptly ran off towards the uncrossable wall in front of 11. Got trapped and lost a minute. Spent the rest of the race trying to chase down Neil again, but only got to within about 30 seconds.
Really fun course and a fun area. Thanks Alex!
10 AM

Orienteering 48:30 [3] 6.91 km (7:01 / km) +147m 6:20 / km
shoes: VJ Supra

CSU SuperStars Quabbin Hill training by PG. The really old map held up fine with respect to contours and rocks, and we were told to ignore vegetation, so the training worked very well. I was left behind at the start as I didn't understand where we were, but soon caught up to the pack and was running with people around for a while, everyone veering off to their forkings. Made a mistake with Neil when I didn't understand the way a steep hill was mapped as an earthbank, and then was on my own since Neil had a longer forking, being less of a weakling than me. Was by myself for the loop across the road and orienteered well. Came into the last control on the far side of the road just behind Ali, J-J, and Balter, but got massive stomach cramps and had to stop for a while. Then jogged the last few controls.
Really enjoyed the training, would have loved to race the last few controls, but the stomach didn't let me. Thanks Peter for a great session!

Reading about Sebba's adventures in the icy and snowy darkness of Uppsala sure motivated my own butt out the door. Got together with Marie, as well as Holly and Will from the Yale ski team and went for a wet run at West Rock. It's no NĂ¥sten in the dead of winter, but it still felt cool to splash through the overflowing streams in the darkness. Nice run, nice company.
