Backbana with Ross. This felt harder than it should for the time I ran. I think I am still not used to the heat, and the shape is not ideal, but I think it's getting better.

Sprint-DM in Ultuna

A fun, though not very difficult, course around the SLU campus and the southern part of backbana ridge. Felt surprisingly good and had a good, clean race. Not an amazing result, but I feel like shape is getting better with every day. Jan won, I was 11th, 1:50 back.

Shadowing Alli around most of the middle course at Åland. She ran well, definitely showing improvement, especially in reading contours and other advanced features.

Orienteering 44:02 [3] 5.7 km (7:44 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra 2012 #2

Met up with Jan to run a middle distance course on Nåsten that I ran over a month ago. The woods have changed so much since then! It's crazy how quickly spring happens in Sweden when it finally arrives.
Last time I ran this course I remember really struggling putting the map reading and running through terrain together. Today it felt so much better - just natural. I ran at a good effort - below race-pace, but still working - and had good focus, as Jan gave me a five minute head start. I made it to #11 before he caught me as I made a 30 second mistake. A good session, but still more mistakes than I should be making: about 5x30 seconds.

Running back to Ångström after dropping off Mats' car for repairs at a mechanic's. Then met up with Alli, Jan, Marcus P, and Lisa R for intervals on a loop at Sten Sture. I felt very weak on the hilly loops, in particular losing a lot of ground on the downhills. I did four loops, with times between 4:25-4:40.

Got home from the run, changed, and met Ulrik to go hang controls on Åland for Wednesday's training. Really nice terrain there, and very pretty - almost a wilderness feeling out in the woods.

In Varberg for Mike and Marie's wedding!

Neil, Alli and I went for a run from our campsite into Varberg, taking the opportunity to run H20 courses from the Swedish sprint champs 2007. The qual went well, except for one place where the map really was too out of date. I struggled in the final, and Neil easily ran away from me. Have a lot to work on before WOC. Beautiful running along the shore back to the campsite.

Orienteering training on Lunsen, starting from Plantskolan.
Here is the course: http://www.dxdeluxe.se/linnekartparmen/show_map.ph...

It was a mixed sort of day: some legs felt really good and smooth, and others were just terrible. Really need to get back into orienteering - just a two-week break is enough to throw me off the groove I was getting into around Tiomila.

Stockholm City Cup Stage 1

Really nice course on a small island off the coast of Södermalm. I didn't sign up ahead of time, but convinced the organizers to let me run the competitive class and start 30 seconds before the first official start. That worked out well, and I was alone for most of the course. Ran mostly a good race technically, taking routes that worked well for me. I overran #11, looking for a control on a tree when it really sat on a road corner a few meters away from the tree. I was also confused on 19 and lost another 15 seconds there.
I ended up 63rd, nearly 5 minutes down on the very impressive Jonas Leandersson: http://eventor.orientering.se/Events/ResultList?ev...

It feels like I should be able to run about a minute faster just speed-wise. I think the week after the US Champs and the trip back to Europe from California have taken a toll. Time to get back to training!

Alli did a great job in the women's race, surpassing her goal of beating 2 people by beating 23. :)

A really nice dinner with Andrew afterwards. I love Stockholm City Cups! I wish there were more than just three this year.

US Sprint Champs

I flew to New York on Thursday, had a nice dinner with my friend Tim who picked me up at JFK, and then spent the night at Balter's, managing to get a few hours of restless sleep. After some adventures, we drove up to Lake George in the morning with Greg and Sergei, in time for the start.

My legs felt heavy during the warm-up, and that did not change during the race. I felt like I was running in a fog and just going through the motions in my orienteering. I did not feel like I had any real problems, but I did lose a lot of time zig-zagging and being uncertain on the way to 14. Even if I knew I was not feeling strong, I was still surprised by how far behind I ended up, over a minute behind Ross, and 6th American (including Ross). Ulrik Nielsen's time was particularly impressive: http://www.usof-rankings.org/ev_show.php?show=cls&...

Thierry put up this training on the training bank, and there is no way I could stay away: http://goo.gl/ZjIx5

There was a contours-only version too, but I was too weak for that. The first orienteering part went well: good focus, nice even tempo. Then the corridor started really well, but I made a parallel error about halfway through and got totally confused. Apparently everyone else did too, as we (me, Albin, Liutas, two Spanish national team guys) were spread out, each standing on his own hilltop trying to figure out where we are). Eventually relocated and continued.

The next part with controls was fine too - really fun orienteering, just running and enjoying myself and loving Lunsen, breathing in the familiar summer smell of Swedish swamps. I decided to skip the last corridor and find the last three controls. Found 23 and 24, and then my brain just stopped working. Trying to get from 25 to finish, I somehow got completely turned around and ended up meandering through the woods until hitting the road to the southwest (!!) of the parking area. Oops.

Still a gorgeous day on one of the best maps in the world with some fine company.

The first sprint, a forked mass start course. A big pack of people, so not too much orienteering, but lots of guts-out running. Good training.

Orienteering 16:36 [4] 3.97 km (4:11 / km) +8m 4:08 / km
shoes: 2013 Asics White+Blue

The second sprint. This was a reverse chase start, which meant I got to watch Thierry go by and got to see him orienteer for a couple of controls. Very impressive to see him pick his routes and get lots of information from very quick glances at the map at full speed.

Running 13:33 [2] 2.3 km (5:53 / km) +23m 5:37 / km

Tiomila!

Leg 7 for Linné's second team.
Marcus P - Mats F - Mandus R - Jörgen O - Olle E - Filip AM - Boris - Ross - Ulrik - Pontus: 75th place

Our team did not have very high expectations, as Linné's squad has been depleted by injuries this year: missing were Mats and Ulf Troeng, as well as Tomas and Rassmus, and this means that top runners from the second team got moved up to the first. But the team got off to a solid start and ran well through the night, climbing into the top 100 before Olle pulled off an amazing run, moving us from 91st to 68th on his leg! Filip also had a great race and handed off to me in 61st.

I went out just behind a couple of teams and quickly caught up to them in the start chute. I ended up running most of the course together with the guy from Ulricehamn, and a small pack that we picked up along the way. We often took different routes, but kept coming together at every control. I had so much fun out there today! I felt strong physically, and seemed to be always in control of my orienteering, knowing what to expect and having the patience to plan my routes and not just run off. All of this had been missing in my orienteering thus far this year, and just seemed to come together today. I took a bad route to the last control and let the whole pack of four get ahead of me, which is too bad. Still, it was a good race for me, and I lifted us a few more places to 58th before handing off to Ross and walking out of the download tent with a big smile on my face. I love Tiomila.

The team ended up 75th, a solid effort from us this year.

Tiomila training on Lunsen, partly on Tjäderleksberget. Some nice high-speed orienteering out there. I had a tough day physically, struggling to lift my legs and keep powering through up and down the tiny hills and dot knolls that this part of Lunsen is populated with. My navigation was ok except for a disaster on #5, where I came a bit to the right of the line, and suddenly nothing made sense. There was a big pack of us milling around, including Ross, Annika, Lisa, Elin, and others. Finally found the control just behind laBaguette who snuck in and got it cleanly while we were all confused. Much better focus and orienteering after this.

Michele was at this training with a whole crew of Italians. It was really nice to see him.
