Hiking 1:30:00 [1]

My first outing in a few days after being sick all week. Grrr. Alli was back from badass training in West Virginia, and we took Barney (and Poppy, making a guest appearance for a weekend) to hike at Catoctin Mountain in northern Maryland. It was a beautiful day for a hike, and I think leaves are just about at peak foliage here this week. We did a nice 8-mile loop that took about 3 hours. Great outing!

Orienteering 30:00 [1] 3.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra 2014-1

I organized a Mid-Atlantic Junior Team training at the QOC local event at Prince William Forest.

Alli, Barney, and I got there around 9am, and I took Barney along to hang streamers for the juniors' corridor training. I had a corridor with 11 controls that were on their maps, plus 8 more that were on the corridor, but not on their maps. The idea was to force them to keep very careful map contact in the corridor and spot the "bonus" streamers as confirmation that they are on the right track. Hanging streamers with Barney proved to be a bit of a challenge, as he often disagreed with me on the streamer locations, and pulled hard to get me to go elsewhere.

I thought the training went well. We had five juniors, which is a solid turnout for a weekend when Fork Union was at an A-meet in Kentucky.

Orienteering!

After making sure all the juniors came back from the training and debriefing with them, I headed out on the Red course. It was a really nice course set by Tori, with a few long legs in the beginning, and some shorter, middle-distance style ones towards the end of the course.

I had a solid run for the shape I am in, without major mistakes. After the course passed through the start area - maybe 2/3 of the way into the course - I decided to pick up the pace and see if I could push hard all the way to the finish. It went pretty well, and I worked hard on the orienteering course, which felt nice. We had a few legs in common with Blue. On the long leg 3-4, Jon T took over a minute out on me. We also had legs 12-15 in common with Blue, and I won each of those, which feels nice. I am probably about 45sec - 1min/km slower than I was in this terrain last winter.

Running 30:30 [2] 5.08 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Yellow Mizunos 2014

Running! I ran home from work, the short way. A lot of traffic lights on the way, so lots of starting and stopping. I felt ok when running, but the starting and stopping wasn't great for the back. Also, felt really out of shape.

Pre-wedding run at Cristina and Melissa's awesome weekend. Ran with Ed, Alex, Ross, Sam, Ian, Zan, Carol, and Greg. What a fun group and a fun run! We even got back in time to dress up as a moose (I was the front, Ian the back, and Alex the herder) and dominate the Forest Games fashion show.

Orienteering race 1:22:49 [3] *** 9.0 km (9:12 / km)
20c shoes: VJ Supra 2014-1

Day 2 at O in the Pines, Red course.

I really enjoyed this course. I thought it offered a nice variety of terrain: low-visibility woods with some rock and contour detail in the beginning, then a fast middle section, and a steep, rocky portion at the end.

I had a pretty good race technically and managed to win the Red course again. When I saw the map, I decided that the key to the race was surviving the first part (S-7) without big time losses, and so I was very careful on the first few controls. Still, I was very uncertain on some of them, especially 3 and 6, where Sergei G took a minute out of me despite me not making a mistake.

At 6 I ran into a sad Alex, and spent the next part of the course running with her. She ran fast, and I had trouble keeping up, especially in the section after #8 and before the road crossing.

After the road crossing I was on my own again and lost time on 15, where I think the control was slightly misplaced. I finished the course well, including winning the long leg to #17 by over a minute by taking a steeper, but shorter and technically easier, route choice.

I had a great weekend of orienteering and socializing and am really glad Alli and I came up to Albany for this meet.

Orienteering race 37:22 [3] *** 4.0 km (9:21 / km)
12c shoes: VJ Supra 2014-1

O in the Pines, my first A-meet running M35.

I had yet another setback in my attempt to get back to regular training after all my back problems, so I basically didn't run for over a week before this A-meet, and had no idea if I'd be able to get around the courses at all.

As it was, however, I got around and had a great time. I just love orienteering, and the pain seems a little more bearable when adrenaline kicks in. Anyway, I had a decent race, losing about 1 minute on #4, but fairly clean otherwise in pretty tough terrain. A lot of people talked about problems reading the trails on the map, but I thought they were mapped exactly as was explained in the meet notes and had no real problems. I ended up winning the red course and being less than two minutes from superman's time for the course. While it doesn't mean a whole lot, only Ethan, who won blue, had faster min/km for the day.

This race left me with some hope that my shape, both physical and technical, was not so far gone that it couldn't be found again if I were to get rid of these back problems and start training again.

The rest of the day was spent with wonderful friends, mostly eating things
