Cross-Training 1:00:00 [2]

Elliptical in the morning. Was hoping to watch the last part of Djokovic-Federer, but Novak was too good and too quick in taking care of Roger... So i watched Charmed instead.

Running 25:00 [2] 4.17 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Yellow Mizunos 2014

Running through puddles and piles of snow on a beautiful, sunny day. Ran down to Rock Creek, then along the Valley Trail for a bit, then back home up Klingle. A mix of packed, soft snow that I was crashing through and cleared, narrow sidewalks.

Cross-Training 2:05:00 [1]

Long session on the recumbent bike at the gym while watching Saturday Night Fever. That movie is not the light-hearted musical I expected it to be.

Cross-Training 1:00:00 [1]

Elliptical while watching Tom Brady get pushed around by Manning and the Broncos. Pure enjoyment.

Cross-Training 1:05:00 intensity: (41:00 @1) + (24:00 @4)

Intervals on the bike at the gym, 8x3 minutes.

Skiing 30:00 [1]

Skiing to Petworth and back with Alli and Barney in the middle of the blizzard. So much fun to ski in the middle of DC!

T.rex training 40:00 intensity: (24:00 @2) + (16:00 @4)

On the bike at the gym. I stopped early to make sure I was hope when Alli got home from the airport, but then it took her 4 hours to get back from Dulles because of the 0.5 inches of snow that fell. Oops.

Cross-Training 1:00:00 intensity: (45:00 @1) + (15:00 @4)

A fartlek on the stationary bike. I watched Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and did intervals during commercials.

Cross-Training 1:30:00 [1]

I seem to be falling apart this week. Back is still sore, my cold doesn't seem to go away, and my tooth has been hurting ever since getting a filling last week (that's not how it's supposed to work, right?). So I decided to skip orienteering and got on the stationary bike instead while the Panthers were dominating the Seahawks in the first half.

Note

My back is feeling worse again, so I am resting (again) until it stops hurting (again).

Cross-Training 45:00 [1]

Some cross-training on the ancient recumbent bike and equally ancient elliptical machine (or whatever based for elliptical machines back in the '80s) at the LOC gym.

Back and core exercises
1 PM

Orienteering 47:00 [2] 5.22 km (9:00 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra Fall 2015

Instead of the cancelled QOC meet at Patapsco, Hannah organized a multi-technique training at Fountainhead. The Campbells came, as did Kenny and Chris, so it was a good group. I was excited for this training, but felt physically very weak from the start and really struggled in the steep terrain. My navigation suffered too, as I made a parallel error on the first route choice leg, losing close to 2 minutes.

During the control pick section, my back started tightening up, and so I cut the training short and ran back on trails.
2 PM

Running 15:00 [2]

Running back to the parking lot.

Saturday Jan 9, 2016 #

Orienteering 59:25 [2] 8.5 km (6:59 / km) +280m 6:00 / km
47c shoes: VJ Supra Fall 2015

Through a series of miscommunications, I ended up at Great Falls alone on a relatively pleasant Saturday afternoon and took this opportunity to run Kenny's control-pick course, with the goal of keeping running the entire time. I was excruciatingly slow, but managed to achieve the goal while orienteering fairly cleanly - just one 20 seconds mistake. It is not long until I memorize this course, but I think it will still be an excellent terrain test loop to have.

Cross-Training 1:00:00 [1]

Elliptical in the gym.

Note
(sick)

I still can't beat the cold I've had ever since getting back from Montana. Combined with continued back soreness, this seems like a good time to rest and heal for a few days.

Monday Jan 4, 2016 #

Note

Just cancelled my entry to the Georgia Navigator Cup. Just not there yet in terms of recovery from the back injury to be able to race two days in a row.

Orienteering 1:30:00 intensity: (40:00 @1) + (50:00 @4) 8.0 km (11:15 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra Fall 2015

O-tervals on Surebridge from Tiorati Circle. Ran with Ian, Kevin, Hannah, Misha, and Kseniya, as well as Balter. Lina did her own thing, as did Alli and Barnacle.

Really fun exercise, and I felt a bit better than yesterday, though still pretty weak. I was able to push ok for the first couple of intervals, but then got very tired, as did everyone else. A great training, and another thank you to Ian for streamering control locations the day before!!

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra Fall 2015

No-compass training on Rockhouse. I've been battling a cold all week, and it got worse after yesterday's long, slow hike with friends on Surebridge. So I took it very easy for this training, and still felt really week, having to walk through blueberry and some of the steeper uphills. Still, such a joy to run at Harriman again! A huge thanks to Ian to planning all the exercises.
