Morning run with Charlie! Met up next to his daycare, then did a short swing through Rock Creek and up the paved Rock Creek bike trail before returning home along East-West Highway and Grubb. So nice to be out on a beautiful morning!

Orienteering race 1:34:14 [3] 11.0 km (8:34 / km)

Harri-goat? Hairy Goat? Greg's Goat.

Anyway, I ran the Harriman Goat / Junior Team fundraiser on the Rockhouse Map in Harriman State Park. I started out with the lead pack, hanging out just behind Will H and Robbie G for a while, with AJ, Peter Z, Patrick D, Janne Salmi, and another Finn in the crowd. I could tell that I was the weakest in the group though, and ended up getting dropped on the way to 8, when I was too slow cutting through the green.

I was alone down to 9, but then spotted young Keegan ahead of me heading to 10. I took a better line midway through the leg, and ended up together with him. The rest of the way we went back and forth, with me navigating slightly better, and him moving slightly better. I was impressed with him - our next Albin?

I got a gap when Keegan missed 15, but he caught back up on the climb to 17 as I was feeling weaker and weaker. We were together on the 19a fork, but split up heading to 20. I took the trail all the way, while Keegan took the swamp route. I was sure that my route was better and did not see him when I punched 20. I looked back as I climbed the hill towards the road and saw him coming in. I figured I had enough of a gap and kept plodding along. Then, within sight of 21 and the finish, I realized that he was closing fast and had to sprint hard to hold off the speedy youngster.

I was pleased with my performance, all things considered. I ended up 8th, about 10 minutes behind Robbie. Something to build on if I can keep myself healthy.

Running in Harriman is always a treat, and goat races are a blast. Thanks Greg and HVO!

Orienteering 1:10:00 [2] 5.0 km (14:00 / km)

Harriman! I drove up in the morning, picked up Zach Kuder along the way and got to a cold, rainy, and windy Harriman. Lake Welch parking, where Greg was supposed to be, was closed. We drove to Kanwaukee, but no Greg there either. Zach and I changed into our O stuff and when we were about to leave, Peter and Albina Zakrevski showed up. Peter moved into our car and, since I had maps, we drove out to do the middle distance training on the west side of Surebridge.

I told Zach to walk the first two controls to get into the map and ran off slowly on my own, but ended up waiting for Zach at 2 when there was no streamer there. From there I shadowed him the rest of the way. Zach did well, nailing a couple of hard controls and quickly relocating the few times he went astray. It was fun to shadow him and also to run around Harriman, even in the cold rain!

This was followed by a bunch of waiting, as Zach, Peter, and Robbie Graham went out to do a second session. I decided that one was enough and hung around with the adults - Jeff T, Greg, Mitch, and Kristin.

We then headed to the Lake Frederick cabins and played games bundled in sleeping bags until the Campbells triumphantly appeared with the pizza!

Running 35:00 [2]

Lunchtime run with Charlie! We ran down the Hill, along the mall, around Washington Monument, and back. Beautiful sunshine, 48F, not too many tourists. The last time I went for a run from work, I needed to stop by a jeweler to pick up my wedding ring... so it's been a while.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2]

A scouting trip out to Little Bennett to prepare for the local event Alli and I are hosting next month. Not the most inspiring map nor terrain, but there are some nice bits. Trying to decide whether it's worth 200m of greenbrier/thorns to bring the advanced courses through some nice woods towards the end, or if I should just have them do a 1.5km trail run to avoid the greenbrier.

Event: QOC Patuxent

Orienteering 1:14:32 [3] 8.0 km (9:19 / km)

QOC local event at Patuxent.

We were somewhat overcommitted for this event, as it turned out that each of Alli and me had two volunteer tasks to perform. Alli had a meeting with the QOC strategic planning group and helped with download. I had a shift of beginner instruction and then coaching juniors and doing course review. That was a bit much for both us to be able to run without stress and to watch Inara, which is becoming a more challenging task as she can go where she pleases at a surprisingly high speed. So, thank you to everyone who took some time watching Inara!

My run was ok. I felt slow and weak from being slow and weak, and also from the heat and humidity. I enjoyed the first part of the course and was running well, but the last few were a slog through large green sections, and I was ready to be done. Still, grateful just to be out there and able to complete a course!

Trying to figure out logistics for the SML Champs, but they are very complicated, requiring either a ton of driving, a lot of hassle, or both... Likelihood of attendance pretty low right now.
