Sunday Dec 10

Running 42:00 [2]5.25 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Trail Shoes
Running to and from backbana in the morning.
Running 1:01:30 [4]11.06 km (5:34 / km) +600m 4:22 / km
shoes: Montrail Trail Shoes
Two laps of the backbana with Joffe, Rob, Fredrik Noborn, and Magnus Saager, who had his two really well-trained dogs along for the run. The first lap took 29:50, which felt pretty comfortable, but I slowed down for the second one and ran 31:40. Joffe ran away from us on the second lap and did under 28 minutes.

Orienteering race 31:30 [4]*** 3.3 km (9:33 / km)
spiked:5/9c shoes: 2006-3 VJ Falcons
The final day of the camp - a chasing sprint, where the chase is started in reverse order of the times of the prologue.
I blew the prologue pretty badly - did not concentrate well and got confused by new fences and structures that weren't on the map. Ended up 6 minutes behind Joe Mercer.

Orienteering race 24:30 [5]*** 3.3 km (7:25 / km)
spiked:8/9c shoes: 2006-3 VJ Falcons
The chase went much better. I had decent speed and good focus and ran well, passing a few people early on. Then got to the tricky area around eight, slowed down a bit and lost a bit more time on 9, but no more than a minute total. Ended up 30 seconds behind Joe and a bit over a minute behind Alan Elder from Cambridge. Solid run.

Orienteering 15:00 [2]
Picking up controls after the chasing sprint.
This was a great training camp, both physically and technically. I will now take a couple of days to recover before getting back to training. Thanks a lot to both the Oxford and Cambridge clubs for letting me come along and making me feel welcome during the camp!! It was a great experience.

Wednesday Dec 6

Orienteering 50:00 [3]
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons
Relocation exercise with Joe Mercer on the Yewdale map - a wide-open area on top of the mountains surrounding the hostel. It took almost half an hour to hike up to the start - 225 meter of climb along the way. Great exercise - we did pretty well on all the relocations, except one when i was leading and got distracted by a couple of sheep on a hillside and ran towards them.

Line-O on Yewdale. Pretty easy to follow the line, even at some speed, since you can see everything so well.
Orienteering 30:00 [3]
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons
Running with Joe and SGB (Stephen Granger-Bevan) collecting controls. By now, feeling pretty comfortable with the map and terrain.
Running 1:40:00 [3]10.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: 2006-3 VJ Falcons
After lunch, SGB, Joe, Graeme from Cambridge, and I went for a run to climb up the Old Man of Coniston (http://www.fellwalk.co.uk/coniston.jpg ; our hostel is the little white building at the bottom). Tough climb, aso tough on top in the wind and fog and, oh yeah, tough and rocky on the way down. Pretty tired by the end. Another great day, this one finished off by celebrating Kat's birthday in the pub in town.

Day 2 of the Lakes camp, on the High Dam map:

and

A great area, with detailed hillsides and low areas with marshes and small knolls and dryland patches of bracken sticking out. This exercise consisted of long legs leading into clumps of controls close together in technical areas, and the idea was to plan the technical bits while doing the long legs.
Orienteering 20:00 [4]2.5 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: 2006-3 VJ Falcons
A "relay" as a way to pick up controls. A good opportunity to try running hard in this terrain. Very wet and tired by the end, but still enjoyable.
Hiking 1:00:00 [2]
Climbing up a mountainside to see the "sunrise". Clearly a foolish idea in the rain, wind, hail, and dark, and with only a bike light to show the way. Surprised no one broke any limbs on the way down, but we all made it, safe and frozen, back to the hostel to grab some breakfast and get ready to head out orienteering in less than an hour.

Monday Dec 4

Orienteering 35:00 [3]4 km (8:45 / km)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons
OUOC/CUOC training camp in the Lake District. We stayed at a nice, cozy youth hostel in Coniston with a group of about 20 orienteers of varying ability, from relative newcomers to the sport to the likes of Joe Mercer and Ruth Holmes, British JWOC runners.
The first day of training was on Holme Fell, the most physical and hilliest map of the week. The map is at http://www.geocities.com/bgranovskiy2/lakes1_06121...

The first workout ended up being a memory-O that Joe and i did together. It went well, and both of us kept up a pretty high pace the entire time, despite the wind and the piles of dead bracken in the way.
Orienteering 35:00 [2]2.33 km (15:01 / km)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons
Control picking of a sort - the exercises was to find as many dot knolls as possible within a box on the map. I ran around pretty slowly, trying to read everything and get used to the map. To be honest, I didn't think this was great training - I am really not sure what I got out of it except getting more used to terrain and map.
Orienteering 35:00 [1]1.75 km (20:00 / km)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons
Line-O with Kat: we kept an easy pace and talked about what features looked like in terrain and on the map. Good exercise for the first day on a map.
Orienteering 35:00 [3]4 km (8:45 / km)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons
An O-course after lunch - first picking up a control and then running the course. This was fun - a bunch of short, technical legs on a hillside to finish off the first day of the camp. And yes, oddly enough, each of my sessions today was 35 minutes.
Orienteering 46:00 [2]4 km (11:30 / km)
shoes: 2006-3 VJ Falcons
A middle distance course after lunch in the swampy areas - very wet, but fun orienteering. Started slowly and sped up gradually. Finished at almost full speed.
