Running 40:00 [2]5.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Trail Shoes
Running to and from backbana start.
Running 32:30 [3]5 km (6:30 / km) +300m 5:00 / km
shoes: Montrail Trail Shoes
Backbana. Some days you have it, and some days you don't. Today fell into the latter category. Right from the start my legs felt really heavy, and i didn't have much energy - possibly because of skipping dinner last night. I struggled through a lap of backbana with Jan Troeng, Pal Skogtjarn, and Rob (as we started, i thought to myself: what business do i have training with these guys??? Two Swedish B-team members, and the 24th best middle distance runner from WOC! Somehow, i didn't feel like i belonged. But i suppose that's something i really like about our club - even the very best runners are very welcoming and happy to train with the likes of me. Pretty cool.) The ankle brace started giving me a blister on the inside of my foot on the downhills, i took it off after one lap, tried starting a second one, but just felt pretty weak and decided to stop. I felt lame doing it, especially as it was a pleasure to be out on this fine sunny, crispy winter day, but i don't think it's wise to be running up and down very steep hills with bad footing with a crappy ankle after taking the brace off...

Innebandy 1:00:00 [4]
Played innebandy in the evening with Jan, Joffe, Johan Hoij, and a few non-orienteers. Lots of fun, all the sprinting back and forth really gets your heart rate up! Too bad i am terrible at it.

Janne's backbana in Uppsala - Splits

Saturday Dec 16

Running 55:00 [2]6.88 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006
Running to and from the start of Vinterejset.
Orienteering race 49:06 [4]7.52 km (6:32 / km)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons
Vinterrejset, a race at Stenhagen organized by some of the club's juniors, Simon Eklov and Albin Ridefelt. ( http://www.ridefelt.se/vinterrejset/2006/index.php )
The race was a mass-start with two map exchanges, one at the first control. To get to the first control, you had to use the mirro image of the real map, which sent people running in all different directions. After this, the race settled down, and I found myself in the lead pack with Tomas Stenstrom, Jan Troeng, Ulrik Imberg, and Bjorn Olovsson. Jan and Tomas pulled away on the last loop, and Ulrik and I got by Bjorn when he made a mistake. I ended up 3rd, about 2:30 down on Jan's winning time, and received a big bag of candy as a prize. Now i am eating it.

Edit: results are now up at http://www.ridefelt.se/vinterrejset/2006/resultat....

Orienteering 1:10:00 [2]5.83 km (12:00 / km)
shoes: 2006-3 VJ Falcons
Hanging reflectors for next wednesday's night-O with Rob on Vattholma, a little-used map about 20km north of Uppsala. A fine, if windy, day, decent terrain, good company. Rob lent me one of his ankle braces, and I ran with it on. Felt pretty comfortable, so I might invest in one the next time I am back in the States (they cost like 3 times as much here.)

Running 36:00 [4]5.75 mi (6:14 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006
My first speed workout of the season. To start off, decided to do a threshold run: 3x12 min with 2 min jogging rest in between, same thing that Rob did the other day. Felt good most of the way and kept a pretty constant pace. Nice to run in this 12C weather!!
C • Gotta love this global warming... 2
Strength 45:00 [3]
Circuits after intervals. Had a duel with Joffe about who can keep up the plank ( http://aerobic.fizteh.ru/sport/a_planka/prav.jpg ) longer. By the end, we were both pretty much shaking uncontrollably and barely dragged ourselves through the rest of the exercises.

Wednesday Dec 13

Note
(injured)
Ankle is a lot better this morning after being iced, compressed, and elevated last night. I think I will take today completely off in the hopes of being able to run on it tomorrow.
C • Time off 3
Biking 45:00 [4]
Ok, I lied about the day off. The ankle was feeling almost totally fine when I biked over to Rob's to help him plan course for next Wednesday's night-O, and so I decided to go to a spinning class after all. Jorgen, Rob, and Lina were there too. As usual, spinning was sweaty.

The ankle is still a bit swollen, but pretty much pain-free, and I can walk without a limp now. Perhaps it looked a lot worse than it was last night.

Strength 1:00:00 [1]
Went to the gym for the first time in ages, tagging along with Rob and doing his standard workout: start with some core work, then alternating upper and lower body exercises. Will surely be sore tomorrow.
Orienteering 2:04:00 [3]17 km (7:18 / km)

Jagge, you jinxed me!
About fifteen minutes into tonight's club training run, I jumped off a small cliff and went over hard on my right ankle. I rolled around in pain for a bit, then got up, walked a couple of hundred meters and then decided to keep going. It was a really fun course, a nice night, good company, and i really did not want to quit and go back. So the combination of adrenaline and cold swamp water kept me going for most of the course, until we got to a candle-lit area inhabited by Santa, Lucia, and a guy in what looked like a Klansman outfit serving us much needed warm glogg and gingerbread cookies. During this welcome break, my ankle stiffened up, and i could just manage a jog back home. Bad news. And just when i was starting to finally feel healthy and strong again...
It's the worst an ankle of mine has looked since a day in the summer of 2000 when the left one looked like this: http://www.geocities.com/bgranovskiy/images/ankle....
