| OK Linné fall planning camp.
I was feeling a bit out of sorts all wekend, mostly just tired and a bit sleep-deprived, so I took it very easy today and went for a trail run on OK Hällen's clubhouse map. A nice trail loop on a rare beautiful sunny morning around here. I wrote a story (in English) about the fall planning camp and all the associated adventures for the Linné website: http://www.oklinne.nu/index.php?page=news&id=2190

| OK Linné's fall planning camp. On the way down to Stigtomta, we stopped at a map called Nynäs and went for a long run there. I was pretty tired, as Kat flew in from England after 2am earlier that morning, so I took it quite easy. The terrain was beautiful, the map a bit rough in places, and the forest very wet. | ||

| This week I am responsible for training, which means I needed to select an appropriate place to run intervals this evening. That was hard to do, given that all the sidewalks, bike paths, and trails in Uppsala have turned into ice, with frozen bicycle tracks making for very unpleasant grooves in the ice. I was at a loss for where to go, but Mats came to the rescue and suggested that we run on the soccer fields in Ekebydalen, just outside my house. This was a great idea, and it worked out really well. The soccer fields were covered with slushy slippery snow, but at least there was no ice, so even if one fell (which, I think, no one did), it was a pretty soft landing. We did a mix of long and short intervals: (4 min on, 2 min off, 1 min on, 1 min off) x 6. There was no set loop to run, but rather, the person who is in the lead gets to pick where to run, and everyone else follows or tries to take over the lead. It was really fun, as the lead changed often, and the people in front kept turning, zig-zagging, slipping and sliding in the snow, all at full speed. A good share of snowballs was thrown, too. Most people stopped after 5 sets. I told myself in the beginning that I'd do 6, so I ran the 6th set by myself. It was really hard to keep pushing on the last one, without any company. | ||

| Wednesday Night-O, the monthly final in Fåfängorna.
Decided to run the long course since I didn't manage to get out and run backbana over lunch. Pretty rough woods and not the best map. The weather wasn't too cooperative either, with freezing rain falling the entire time. I started first, together with Andrew, and made a big mistake early, losing like 3-4 minutes right away. Then ran ok for a while, got caught by Ulrik going to 5 and stayed with him all the way to 11. Read the map well the entire time, but could not have kept the same pace and smooth navigation by myself. Was with a few other people from 12 to 13 and missed 13 slightly, ending up by myself. Took the around route on the trail to 14 and ran around within 100 meters of the control for a while, looking for a dot knoll on a large, flat hilltop. Very cold by this point and quite sure I was the last person still in the woods. Found 15 just fine and got to within a few meters of 16, saw the reflector, and realized that my lamp was dying. Panicked. First, I switched to a method of alternating walking in darkness to catch my breath and sprinting really hard with the light on for a few seconds. Then I turned the lamp to lower power, and that seemed to work ok. Ran really hard to 17 and then to the finish in a state of silent fear. Was very, very glad to see the finish and the car. Ooof, what an experience! Results: http://www.oklinne.nu/onsdagsnatt/results.php?id=4... Route Gadget: http://www.oklinne.nu/routegadget/cgi-bin/reitti.c...

| Tuesday night run, course F.
What a difference two days make! With some snowfall and slightly colder temperatures, running through the woods changed from a wet, freezing neverending nightmare to a nice feeling of running through white, powdery woods and over partly frozen marshes. Although both the course and the forest were really nice tonight, I felt totally dead and just struggled to hang on the entire way. Managed to read the map only 30-40% of the time, which really needs to change over the next few Tuesdays. As always, though, it felt so nice to come back to the clubhouse, have a sauna, and then lie around eating sandwiches and watching Mats gulp down cookies as he complained about his weight. :)

| When sleet from the day before freezes overnight, what is formed is a surface of ice with bicycle tire imprints, shoeprints, and doggy paw prints etched into it. Add to this darkness and a freezing cold wind, and what results is a pretty awful evening for running. It's a good thing I just finished writing up a training plan for the nearest future, so the shame of starting the plan with an unfulfilled workout outweighed the desire to stay indoors. I did a tempo run on my "morning jog" loop, around Ekebydalen, Flogsta, and Studentvägen. The plan was to run 24 minutes at a steadily fast pace. Did 1 full loop (22:00) and a bit more. Pleased with the effort, but not the kind of weather I'd like to experience too often. | ||
