Swiss O Week Day 6

Finally, a run from which I walked away with a smile. Still not perfect, but the overall feel was much better. I think I had the right balance of speed and map reading today, and really felt in control of my orienteering while still running well. I missed one of the two bingo controls (#5), but had a really good stretch of orienteering after that, probably the best I've run all spring. I picked up a shadow along the way to 6 and kept him until 15, where I finally ran away on the road. (I am particularly pleased by this road route choice to 15, as a lot of people ran straight and made mistakes, and I had the best split of my race there.) I should have done the same to 16, but went straight there, and that was much slower. I made a mistake on 18, being pushed left of the line by the terrain, but recovered fairly well, considering the tricky terrain. Clean the rest of the way after that.

Ended up 17th, my best placing of the week, a nice way to finish a tough week of racing.

Overall I finished 29/87 in HAL, definitely below my expectations.

Swiss O Week Day 5

Decided to wear my GPS today for the first time even though they are banned, since everyone else was ignoring the ban. I started 2 minutes behind Biggins and could see him most of the way (there were no trees on the map). Caught him around #5, and then ran with him for a bunch of legs. We took different (slightly) routes to 8, but came together anyway. I started pulling away on 9-10-11 and ran well there, but then drifted far left on 12, and Greg was with me again. I then missed 13 and was chasing Greg. We both proceeded to blow 14, and I recovered a bit faster. Was really unhappy with myself for that, but ran ok the rest of the way, except for drifting wide on 17.
Ended up 31st on the day, 14 minutes back: http://www.o-l.ch/cgi-bin/results?type=rang&year=2...

Pretty uninspiring orienteering from me so far at the Swiss 6. At least Ross had a good day, his best result so far this week.

Swiss O Week Day 4

This race was all side hill running and steep downhills with very rough, muddy ground underfoot. I had been frustrated with my orienteering the previous days, so I decided to plan each leg carefully this time, stopping at each control and taking my time. This worked well for the first 17 controls, but when we hit the section of the map that was enlarged to 1:5000, I did not respond well. I overcompensated for the large scale and underran #18 and had serious trouble relocating, losing nearly 4 minutes. I then spiked 19, but it had no epunch unit and no code, so I assumed it wasn't my control. Ran around for a while, decided it was mine after all, used the manual punch and moved on. Another 2 minutes gone.
The final result was pretty terrible, as I am apparently an awful downhill/sidehill runner through tough terrain. Ended up 47th, 23 minutes back - worst result of the week so far: http://www.o-l.ch/cgi-bin/results?type=rang&year=2...

Swiss O week - day 3

Some of the most fun terrain I've ever seen. We took three gondolas/cable cars to get here, and it worth it. Just below the foot of the Vorag glacier, lots of moraine terrain on a slope. Great runnability and visibility, but super-technical.
Another mediocre performance from me, unfortunately. A couple of mistakes in the middle of the course when I lost focus and was too distracted by other runners. Amateur mistakes - really not sure what I am doing out there.
Finished 32nd this time, another 18 minutes behind. Ugh.

Swiss O week - day 2

This was the steep day. We took a gondola to the assembly area, then climbed 200m down to the start, then another 100 or so to the first control. I started ok, but made a poor choice to #4, coming to the control from below and having to climb a very steep slope up. Then more trouble at 6, where I punched a control on the same feature (code 56) about 60 meters from mine (code 55) and ran to 7. I got to 7, and thought to myself: this was shorter than I thought. Weird. Ran back to the right control this time, but lost a good 3 minutes and got pretty frustrated. A few controls later, the climbing started. Pretty much straight up for two long legs. Very steep, only walking. Was surprised that I remembered how to run once the course flattened out again. Did the last few controls well, but still too many mistakes. Ended up 34th, 17 minutes back. Not good.
