Upplands Lång-DM organized by Tierps SOK at Frebro, the map I ran on for the 2008 Stafett-DM.

Very rocky terrain, which was hard to run fast through despite the excellent visibility. I seem to remember being able to get through it much more efficiently the last time I ran here, but that's not surprising. I made some mistakes early in the course (0:15 on 2, 0:30 on 3, 0:15 on 5, 1:00 on 6) and never really got any good flow to my orienteering until the furthest portion of the course (7-10). I ran pretty well to the map exchange, but made another mistake (1:30) on 16 when I got caught up in swampy vagueness and had to relocate. Finished pretty well, without mistakes on the last loop despite being tired. An ok long race overall - no real speed of any kind, but held a pretty consistent pace the whole way. Finished 14th in the DM, 20 minutes behind Lukas Peterson.

Will post the map when I have time.

A morning recovery run in Stadsskogen with Ross. We ran with maps and took turns getting each other lost on trails. As usual with Stadsskogen, getting lost did not take much effort. Beautiful sunny morning. Now time for work.

A night-O race was very welcome after a long day at work. This was Natt-DM, organized by Länna on a new map, Stora Wäsby. I was very excited before the start but started very cautiously, wanting to avoid big mistakes on the tricky first two controls. I did ok, mostly in control of my navigation, but not moving very quickly. When I came in to 3 too low despite having a solid attackpoint, I was caught by Simon, who started 4 minutes behind me. This made me snap out of my sleepy pace a bit, and I sped up, orienteering well for the rest of the first map and getting away from Simon. Control 12 was a long leg, with about 600m of nasty-looking greenness on the straight line before the control. I broke the golden rule of orienteering in Uppland (always run straight) and went left through the fields, one of which was actually awful rough open, with waist-high ferns concealing pointy logs underfoot, and nettles everywhere. I got out of this crap after a while and slowly but surely made my way to the control. I was caught by Lukas Peterson at 13, but got ahead on a slightly better route to 14. I ran well the rest of the way, except for overrunning the easy second-to-last control. And this after telling Ross before the start to not stop orienteering till the very end. Oops.

Quite happy with my race in the end - probably about 6 minutes lost total, which is not bad for a 9km technical night race. I also felt more confident as the race went on, which is a good sign.

Note: Last year Albin won Natt-DM, and I was 17:23 behind. Tonight, Albin won again, and I was 18:23 behind, but on a longer and much more technical course. I think this is actual progress from a year ago.

(sick)

In Uppsala. Have a cold. Trying to furnish the apartment with Sam and Ross all day yesterday. Mostly successful.

Note

So I am officially giving up on the 2010-2011 2000 control challenge and starting a new one today. Who is with me?

For the record, the number for the previous 365 days was 1492.

I saw a moose! I saw a moose! I saw a moose!

Was in a pretty foul mood most of the day and still feeling the head cold I got upon my return from France, plus the weather sucked. In the afternoon the sun came out, and I decided to go for a jog on a map while the club ran orienteering intervals on Hammarskog. I am glad that I went. I felt ok jogging and enjoyed the woods, though I was practicing the modified French technique of No Speed, Numerous Mistakes. But the highlight was definitely the moose, only my fifth or so in Uppsala. Yay moose, really a magnificent beast!

The evening continued with yummy soup at the clubhouse and Mats' presentation about the upcoming Swedish Champs races and terrain.
