A night-O race was very welcome after a long day at work. This was Natt-DM, organized by Länna on a new map, Stora Wäsby. I was very excited before the start but started very cautiously, wanting to avoid big mistakes on the tricky first two controls. I did ok, mostly in control of my navigation, but not moving very quickly. When I came in to 3 too low despite having a solid attackpoint, I was caught by Simon, who started 4 minutes behind me. This made me snap out of my sleepy pace a bit, and I sped up, orienteering well for the rest of the first map and getting away from Simon. Control 12 was a long leg, with about 600m of nasty-looking greenness on the straight line before the control. I broke the golden rule of orienteering in Uppland (always run straight) and went left through the fields, one of which was actually awful rough open, with waist-high ferns concealing pointy logs underfoot, and nettles everywhere. I got out of this crap after a while and slowly but surely made my way to the control. I was caught by Lukas Peterson at 13, but got ahead on a slightly better route to 14. I ran well the rest of the way, except for overrunning the easy second-to-last control. And this after telling Ross before the start to not stop orienteering till the very end. Oops.
Quite happy with my race in the end - probably about 6 minutes lost total, which is not bad for a 9km technical night race. I also felt more confident as the race went on, which is a good sign.

Note: Last year Albin won Natt-DM, and I was 17:23 behind. Tonight, Albin won again, and I was 18:23 behind, but on a longer and much more technical course. I think this is actual progress from a year ago.
