Cross-Training 35:00 [1]

Lunchtime at the work gym. Listened to the Freakonomics podcast for the first time. I like it, but it doesn't make the time go by as quickly as either quiz shows (WWDTM/AMA) or Hardcore History.

Orienteering race 1:24:13 [3] 7.2 km (11:42 / km) +260m 9:54 / km
shoes: VJ Supra Fall 2015

QOC local event at Cunningham Falls State Park, the first time this park has ever been used for orienteering, thanks to Jon T!

This was an advanced-only event, and it lived up to its billing, with approximately 50% DNF's out of all starters. It was a very hot day, and the woods were steep and very rough, both in footing and in the amount of deadfall scattered throughout. It was very difficult to get going with any sort of speed.

Having said that, I enjoyed the Red course: the map was quite good given its limitations, and the controls were all in the right spots, hanging nice and high.

I started out well and was running well through the first 6 controls before getting overconfident and blowing #7 completely. I went in too high, realized it, dropped too low, and had to come back to the large gully to relocate and attack again. I probably lost about 4-4:30 on that leg. I thought I was running well to #8, but just slid by it on the way out of the green and lost another minute.

Pretty clean the rest of the way, but much slower, mostly walking the uphills. The only other time loss shown by AP is on 13, when I ran into Laura walking Barney back from the Brown course. We chatted for a while, as she told me that he had puked up the water he was drinking and was feeling quite weak. Poor overheated beagle. :(
