So we got like 70 people at Lone Pine today, and it was awesome. It felt like a legit event, with people streaming in all the time, beginner instruction running full-on, and lots of people out in the woods when I was running.
Huge props to Will Dickinson, who got in touch with the Flathead Beacon, put up flyers in outdoors stores and coffee shops, and held a clinic two weeks ago. Oh yeah, and he also put out all the controls.
I had the rare opportunity to design courses, but not put out flags, which meant I then got to run my own course and see if I liked what I designed. But first, after the initial crowd was out on their courses, I took Inara out on Beginner. She did awesome - ran all the flats and downhills, checked all the control codes, and picked the correct trails at junctions with a pretty good (better than random) accuracy. She has been missing mom, but telling people that "mom is saving the world because she in Scotland working on climate change."
Will and Jesse Nelson had registration and beginner instruction covered when I got back with Inara, so I headed out on my own Advanced course. I liked it. :) I think I got the long route choice (5-6) wrong.
