Event: Oceania Champs Carnival

Adventure Race race (CityChase World Final) 3:00:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline ASR 7
Never been so scared in my life as standing on the ledge of the window that we jumpedd from... cant wait to see the Nat Geo show.

After a few morning activities and organisational adjustments to timings our time behind the Canadian leaders was cut fro 64 to 30min. (I don't know why the timings up to the previous night were kept and were seemingly not kept at any other time in the race other than the main concern was the filming, not an actual race, but we knew it would be like that)

So we took off from Nemi and raced really well to the finish, except for the very end. We were actually only 50m behind the Candians with about 200m to go. But we didnt see where they went and the official pointing the way seemed to disappear as we approached (presumably to watch the Candians). We turned by mistake into the metro and lost a few minutes dicking around. Then realised and ran up the stairs to the finish.

Its hard to claim its a race, but it kinda is. But what it was/is is an extraordinary experience that tests your physical, emotional and mental boundaries. Its also an experience that brings you closer to people and you make friends from around the world that wouldnt occur in any other type of race.

Adventure Race race (CityChase World Final) 6:00:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline ASR 7
Had a bit of a poor start to the day, actually it was a crap day for us and why we eventually lost the race.

First task was an obstacle course on the beach in mankinis and in the end we lacked the strength to do this and paid a little bit time-wise. Since the English are weaklings too we completed the task near them and rode (the wrong way) in to our now infamous arrest.

After the Fashion show all teams were more or less started together. We reached the kayaks with the Canadians in the lead and had a reasonable paddle (2nd out behind Hong Kong) uckily as after falling in the water several times without going anywhere they changed boats for us. We then made a mistake and waited for the Canadians to rn with them. We then ran to a restaurant, reaching it with the those teams and the Portugese. We then lost time in recruiting our diners (we had to recruit people off the street to eat for free) and then were sabotaged when a massive plate of bruschetta was placed on our diners table. Unfortunately for us they were relly hungry and wanted the plate to stay and wanted to enjoy their experience. So we left the restaurant in 4th place, 25min behind Canada and through the rest of the race were never able to catch them (in fact they extended their lead going in to the night, I suspect mainly due to the raising of foreign currency in Piazza Navona faster than us).

The day also saw th departure of one the biggest threats - Portugal. They refused to get the tattoo, although they were a fair way behind at the time.

Adventure Race race (CityChase World Final) 3:00:00 [3]

The race started unexpectedly quickly and we didnt really pack everything we needed. I even thought/hoped we would revisit our gear later that night in a hotel or something. But we didnt see our bag for 3 days.

Race went without any surprises today, at the time the race came to its first major hault (at the Gladiator school) we finished with the Portugese who were impressive ARers in first, 30min ahead of the next team, and 2.5 hours ahead of Canada. But it was a tv event, and that meant that this, as well as other time leads we held counted for nothing.

Craney wrote a good report on his AP, so best to read about the race there. Andy and I will write a report later which will probably end up on the Stingers page.

Ran from hotel to Imperial Forum then down to the old baths (Cancellara). Felt pretty good finally. Was just nice to run really.

Saw the US team being interviewed by Citychase so dropped in to say hi. They same pretty cool and switched on.

Run with Kylie. Felt okay at first but struggled up the hills and was going hypo by the end.

Event: Max 24hour

Adventure Race race (Max24) 16:06:00 [4]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline ASR
Meet my teammate Stuart late Friday night, was a good guy so no problem to race with. He has done 2 XPDs and has all the gear so knows whats going on, didnt quite have the speed but was pretty solid allround.

1. Kayak 2:26.00 - made a bit of a meal of the first bit as got stuck in really shallow water for a while, at one point got out, but that was a mistake as I just sank and Stuart lost his shoe for a bit. Made up some places gradually through the paddle but it was pretty shit. Was very very glad to get out of those shitty plastic things.

2. Trek ? - we tore most of this up, passing lots of teams, although the chicks team that ended up winning passed us running up the hill (we passed them later) - i blame Stu.

3. MTB or should I call it carry the MTB - there was some nice riding and some real shit. It was solid going and we rode quite well, by the end of the ride we were first team.

4. Rogaine - was really tough going, very slow through some real shit stuff although most was kinda boulder hopping in creeks. We pushed pretty solid and did the leg with the solo entrant coming 2nd at that stage. We nailed most of it then went up a parallel creek near the end and ended up losing about 50min. Was pretty annoyed at self. Saw a massive lizard that was really cool. Finished leg about 4 or 5th team although after transition we were 3rd i think.

5. MTB Rogaine - this was a joke, Garys organisation at its best. The map was incredibily shit, seriously, i could draw a better one now it was seriously bad, incorrect you name it. After losing probably 60-90min we gave up on one control (with a LOT of other people). This leg was all in the dark and as we rode to the next TA I had pretty much thrown it in and was crusing home.

6. Kayak - 3 hours - this was never ending across a lake.

7. Trek - Stu had left our map in a box earlier in the course so we waited for Mace and Sebba, letting a couple of teams go. We didnt have to wait that long, we started the kayak together. Pretty good last trek though and we passed 2 teams although I think they had missed a lot of controls from earlier. We crossed the line with Seb and Mace who won the mixed, and were 20min behind the girls who won overall (we were ahead of them after the kayak). We crossed the line as the first male team but copped a huge penalty and ended up 2nd for that missed control (the girls and Sebba and Mace won their categories by enough it didnt matter).

Felt pretty tired the whole race and only a couple of moments running and on the bike did I feel good.

Cycling 33:00 [3]
Taking Robbie's Jamis out for a spin to make sure it works, it does.. kinda.

Not completely sure if my ankle is sore, or I just think its sore, leaning towards it really is sore though. Its not too bad, another couple of days should be fine. Treating it with kid gloves at the mo though.

It did mean I was super timid on the MTB, and you shouldn't be on a MTB, its just not MTB.

Wednesday Sep 19

Cycling (Windtrainer) 30:00 [3]
Just rode on the windtrainer cos I was going a bit batty and feeling like shit having not exercised. Felt much better afterwards, solidish ride, HR in mid 150s

Ankle was fine on the windtrainer, which is a good first step, but its only a first step.

The ankle injury hurts medially due to the compression, the ligaments laterally are absolutely fine. So in a way its worse, cos the pain is in the joint.

Monday Sep 17

Note
(injured)
ankle hurts to walk on.

Run with Sebba and Kez after the party last night.

Felt good until I sprained left ankle, fairly bad. Hobbled home, only to be met by Kez hobbling back a little later. Seb broke us both...

Going to have to nurse this a lot, 24h race this weekend, citychase in Rome the following...

Event: 70's Disco

Run tempo 24:00 [4]
shoes: Brooks Racer ST
Threshold session, same as last week. First time I've done it in full daylight so I think I was a minute quicker largely due to being able to run the downhills a bit quicker, not that there is many. BJ ran first 10min of the effort with me, prick looked easy, I hurt, but was pretty happy with the whole session in the end.

Cycling intervals (RevMaster) 55:00 [5]
Cracker class tonight, really hammered.

Monday Sep 10

Note
Missed out on a run today, and flew back to Sydney. Nice holiday with the folks. Would have liked to get in more running but oh well.

Had to endure Kerrin telling a cafe owner how shit his coffee was and telling him how to do his job. (It was really crap coffee - the Cafe something in Port Douglas). The coffeeworks tour in Mareeba was nice, but not worth the price. Fav were the coffee liquer and lemon myrtle chocolate.

Happy Bday Mum

Sunday Sep 9

Kayaking 45:00 [1]
Went kayaking just south of Cape Tribulation on a tour with Kez and MAce, and tour guide Gary. It was real slow and a little frustrating, but that wasnt the point. Saw 4 turtles in the end, one in particular put on a great show and even seemed to wave. No reef shark sighting unfortunately. Tour was 90min or so, but a lot was just sitting around.

Didnt get to go up a creek where a known croc was as the tide was too low and we just couldnt get up.
Run 1:18:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline ASR
Desperate to find places to run in the Daintree NP again. Mace, Kez and I ended up with another beach run with some rock-hopping. Was pretty nice but could have been so much better.

Felt crap by the end, think cos we were going slow and rock-hopping and stuff. Or it could be that I got old.

Saturday Sep 8

Run intervals 20:00 [4]
shoes: Brooks Trance
Morning session with Kez and Mace. Did Mona fartlek on Port Douglas beach. Pretty nice, and quite a few people out walking early.

Felt flat before starting, but ran well and felt really good by the end. Quick dip in the sea after the intervals was a treat.
Run warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Trance
After the run we headed out to the reef for a day or snorkelling. Awesome day, tho pulled up a bit sore from swimming with the fins for a couple of days.

Even got to see a humpback and its calf having a play on the tip out to the reef.
Run 30:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline ASR
Ended the day with a jog with Kezza through southern Port Douglas including the beach.

Friday Sep 7

Run 31:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Trance
Disappointed with the tracks up in the Daintree, must be trying to keep people out of most of the NP.

Ended up on a short boradwalkm and a small single track through rainforest. Was pretty cool and I felt really good though it was a slow pace. Mace was scared, initially of snakes (since I was bitten by one last time I was in Northern Queensland on a similar track) but then by Casuaries after seeing the size of its shit. Saw one later on.

Thursday Sep 6

Run long 1:50:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 6
Very early morning run after dropping Kez off at the train station.

Did 20min then picked up Rob and we ran tick loop. Almost entered this run in as a trek, it wasnt fast at all and I think Robbie is getting a few sore spots.
Note
Kez got me a new espresso machince for my birthday... joining the ranks!

(is that what you meant Sheppa?)

Beat myself up again, this time with Kylie as a witness.

Yes, stop rubbing your eyes, you read it right... with Kylie as a witness (and participant in the class)

Maxed the bikes out, hit the limit of the resistance and was still going. Instructor yelled at my to turn the resistance up but there was none to turn up. Pretty satisfying :)
Run warm up/down 30:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Racer ST
jog to gym and extended cool down - part of Paul Mac loop. Felt good.

Monday Sep 3

real easy night run by self. from the Preston Palace to spice things up. By self though, although enjoyed looking at all the big (some nice, some ugly) houses in north Lindfield. Chatted to Robbie a bit about XPD. I think Robbies hard.

Felt good although lacked a little strength for the surges on the hills.
