skating 25:00 [1]

Not sure if this really counts as training but it was great to get back on skates! Hockey will start soon which I am looking forward to...

Core 15:00 [1]

Cycling 40:00 [1]

Wednesday Feb 3, 2016 #

Running warm up/down 12:00 [1] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)

About 5 mins before and after race and then collected #6

Orienteering race 29:55 [3] 5.04 km (5:56 / km)

X-League #3! Great course as it forced you to decide whether to risk doing the map memory double-black diamond control or just go for the 2 black diamonds... I ended up playing it safe and just go for the two black diamonds, this was good as I made it back just in time and didn't have to worry about getting lost off the map! If #5 hadn't disappeared and I hadn't wasted time looking for it I probably would have gone for them all... Happy with the race and my decisions but there is always that what if I had gone for it feeling.
My groin is feeling better from yesterday but now my left calf is a little tight, some rolling should help!

Orienteering (urban ) 35:04 [3] 5.7 km (6:09 / km)

Fun course set by Emma! Started with a line-o and then a control pick, worked on flow and looking ahead. I found that by the end of the course I wasn't looking ahead as much which caused slowdowns, I only stopped once to tie my shoe and flow felt good because no controls to punch!

Running warm up/down 9:50 [1] 1.88 km (5:14 / km)

Yoga/Stretching 5:00 [0]

5 PM

Running warm up/down 11:00 [1] 2.2 km (5:00 / km)

to/from Mac

Running intervals 27:30 [4] 5.68 km (4:50 / km)

TNT - 8 Figure 8 loops about 700m each with 1 minute rest in between and 2 min rest between intervals 4 and 5. Tiring stuff in the big winds but I managed to keep a pretty consistent pace throughout which I am happy about. My left groin is pretty sore I started feeling it around the 3rd loop - not sure if this is just from a lack of stretching or the terrain but hopefully some stretching will help!

Orienteering 40:00 [3] 3.8 km (10:32 / km)

Finally got out to the the ARXmas course starting from Morgan Firestone in the valley...beautiful day today but VERY muddy in the woods! Slow pace because it was almost impossible to run up or down the hills without wiping out - I still had a few face plants though! I tried to focus on the nav and work on simplifying the map - there are a lot of prominent contours that I was able to use as a hand rail. At each checkpoint a spent a bit of time ensuring that everything lined up and I was in the circle as there were no controls/tape out - except for at #5! I picked up a mini control so @Anvil or Atropos I will bring that Wednesday. Overall happy to get on a map and pleased with my routes!

Running warm up/down 5:00 [1] 0.8 km (6:15 / km)

Cycling 50:00 [2]

Disappointed I couldn't get outside this morning as it looked like perfect spring (in January?) conditions - about 8 degrees and sunny... I ended up with a family commitment and then a meeting followed by finalizing my last University application/supplementary so I was happy to get that done but sad I couldn't get for a long run. Settled for a good cycle though - increased resistance and found I was sweating a lot more than yesterday...
These next few days off school should be good for training!

Map Reading 10:00 [0]

All signed up for SOW - yay!! Took a look at two SOW 2006 maps from Meghan, a sprint map and a long. The long route choices look difficult because of the many small cliffs to worry about and detailed contours within the legs, in some cases I'm thinking its better to go around the whole small cliff area to make for smoother running and time to plan ahead/focus on navigation... however in a couple of the legs it looked better to just go through. I will continue to look at maps and try to evaluate all of the route choices knowing that during the races my decisions need to be quicker!

Core 10:00 [1]

My brother and Dad built a "hiking bench" for sail training today... it is basically a v-sit contraption where you put your feet under a strap and your butt off the edge of the low bench and then lean back so you are parallel with the ground (or lower) - had to try it out! It is a very good workout! Did some squats and planks as well.
