Orienteering race 46:23 [3] 5.8 km (8:00 / km)
Middle Distance - OOC
This race didn't go as well as I wanted it to... My bearings were off to the right for the first few controls and I wasn't using the features in conjunction with the compass as I should have been. I over shot #4 and had to do some climb back up. After that I got more into the map and the 1:7500 scale, I was happy with my route for the long leg and #6-10 went smoothly although I stopped to rethink my initial route to #10 and was happy with the new route avoiding the major hill. Coming into 10 I was trying to show coach Meghan my flow through the control and I definitely flowed just not in the direction I was planning on...I got thrown off by the two other hills with a trail between them and ended up taking a decent detour, oops! The rest of the race I was extra cautious and no other errors once I was on track. Overall a good learning experience - noting that I need to continue working on using both features and the compass and not feeling like I have to choose one or the other for a route. Felt a bit sluggish so pushing it up the hills and throughout the middle distance courses is something I can work on for mentality. As a positive I was able to put my mistakes behind me on the course and keep on pushing and my overall flow through was good!

Overall much happier with this race! Just two route choices that probably weren't ideal - to #1 I played it safe going around the building, partly because I didn't see the straight route at the start, had to get used to seeing the passages. And then to number 9 I added a few m of climb by going down around the building - this was from not looking at the control description mainly. Other than that I felt good about planning ahead and pushing it on the dead legs. The technical residence area was great training for avoiding the traps. I will keep trying to build my speed!
