Biking race 17:24:31 [5] 206.7 mi (5:03 / mi)
shoes: Cannondale Tandem 29er

Well, the Dirty Kanza was everything it’s hyped up to be, which is rare. Many races (any type) are high on marketing and low on actually producing the quality race and venue. Very well done by the event organizers, and the community involvement is unprecedented. I’m sure we’ll be back either racing it, crewing it, or shooting it. Middy was certain that we’d never return to Emporia before we raced it. Now she’s totally (well almost) up for a return ☺

Longest 14 hour drive to Kansas ever! We left Thursday morning so we would have all of Friday to rest and enjoy all of the pre-race festivities. Breakfast with our favorite Canadians, morning “coffee ride”, racer check-in, lunch at a quaint bakery, mandatory local bike shop visit for DK loot, pre-race meeting in the famed Emporia Granada Theatre, small vendor expo, then dinner with our favorite Canadians (we spent a lot of time with them……. Because they are just so darned nice!)

Unlike OM who had to use the "Crew for Hire" services, we had our own personal crew (friends of Middy's who have family in Kansas so incorporated a family visit with the race). Wow, so nice to be catered to at the checkpoints! They were amazing.

Our goal = finish the race before Midnight.

Our race strategy = pace ourselves (especially the first 100), walk the steepest of hills so we have the legs to finish the last 50 without crying. Eat and hydrate at regular intervals, and keep the chamois cream flowing. No bitching or whining allowed. Keep in good spirits as much as possible. And no getting mad at each other for any reason........ period.

Outcome = Raced exactly how we discussed and not only finished before Midnight, we did so feeling pretty good considering we just rode 206.7 miles of the knarliest gravel roads ever, and twice as far as we have ever ridden in one day. Oh, and we had the privilege of getting a podium spot on the infamous Emporia Granada Theatre stage. Just....... wow :)

The details soon......
