1st leg for TuMe 2.
Started in a pretty good position of 34th. Thought the start was quite nice and chill, ended up very near the front but far enough away as to let the other guys decide what to do first. Had a good route to number one, followed the pack, kept track of where I was, saw they were going to their gaffles (mine was the furthest) but was slow and cautious to mine - wanted to make sure I didn’t have a mare to it. Hit it eventually after a fair banana - +2:01 on the lead - to this one the quickest route was around the road but I had gone straight.
Knew I was fairly midpack and not near the front so got my act together and focused on trying to do the nav myself. Hit the first radio in 78th and missed the next couple of controls by about 10/15s. Slightly left, slightly right, not trusting those around me to do a good job or even to be going to my control.
Finally started to get my act together and from there to the finish ran one of the cleanest races I’ve done in a long time! Kept it clean, slowly overtaking those in the train in front of me, and those who kept making mistakes until I hit the front of the second group, about 20s (looking back at it) off the back of the front group - so agonisingly close! Had to do a lot of my own navigation as was in a small group and the gaffling was bloody difficult but got the job done pretty nicely, the front group getting away towards the end as they all got excited for the finish but equally me keeping it pretty clean, focusing on myself and trying not to panic.
So yeah, finished 1:45 back, 50s off the back of that front group. But all things considered, being over 2mins back by the first control, really pretty happy to get the job done from there, keep it pretty clean and smooth and get back with a job well done.
Great fun and exciting to see the first team doing so well - some big things to aim for for next year!
