| Orienteering race (Newcastle Street Series) 46:00 [4] | ||
| shoes: Asic 2110 | ||
| at Thornton. It's been many a year since i did a Newcastle street race, but they haven't changed much. 31 controls, and you have to answer the multiple choice question at each control. I actually think this is a better challenge than looking for the flower pots in Sydney.
Felt pretty slow and wasted some time at a few of them, but not too bad a run. 36points (which was being eyed off by a few ambitious juniors when i left). NB. My garmin battery ran out after about 5 mins which meant i had to guess my 45mins- and only 19secs late. not bad!
Tuesday Nov 27 | ||
| Kayak (Rose Bay) 1:45:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Red7 double | ||
| morning paddle on Sydney harbour in single Red 7, with Damon and Fleur. Terrible weather, rainy and windy, but got better as paddle went on.
Damon has quit work, and Fleur got made reduntant last Thursday, so it was strange training together on a weekday.

| Adventure Race (MWC Day 6) 2:40:00 [5] | ||
| Starting on Mt Wellington- furious decent down to Cascade brewery. We quickly dropped the field, and ran ok, but could have been a few mins faster. Both feeling a bit sick in the stomach.
Onto the bikes for a quick ride thru Hobart to Taroona. Lost a bit of time here, and we saw All Aerobics and Usshers hoping in the kayaks not long after us. Paddled hard for 50mins, the last part into strong wind with the boat taking on water. Climbed Wrest Point Casino via the stars, then abseiled off. Still had about 2min lead and ran flat out thru Battery Point to the finish at Salamanca. Won by about 5-10mins. http://markwebberchallenge.com/media/details.cfm?o... Great afternoon drinking beers at the Quarry, then quick sauna/spa before dinner. Another awesome spread, and good fun night. Look forward to next year. Already tried sorting out a team.
| C • Jarad 2 | ||
Thursday Nov 22 | ||
| Adventure Race race (MWC Day 5) 5:00:00 [4] | ||
| Again starting with a paddle. We sat on the Usshers the whole time (managing to drop the rest of the field at CP1). Elina said that we had no balls- but nor does she!
Finally a good transition since we paddled in bike shoes. Off in the lead, and never caught by the Usshers. I was having a better day, and Jarad and I took turns leading. Another fun course, technical but not too techical, physical but not too physical. Finished the ride with a lead of 6-7mins. An untimed climb up a 250m hill before abseiling 140m granite face. Looked spectacular, and there are some great photos. But a rope that long is very slow and it actually was an effort to get down. The 2nd 50m abseil was more fun. A fun traverse and rock hop back to the bikes. Short ride, followed by 5km rockhop back to Coles bay camp. Felt good running so tried to hurt Jarad a bit on the rough rocks. Finished hard on the beach. Finally cracked the Usshers- beat them by 25mins. http://markwebberchallenge.com/media/details.cfm?o...
Wednesday Nov 21 | ||
| Adventure Race race (MWC Day 4) 3:07:43 [5]45 km (4:10 / km) | ||
| Freycinet National Park.
Started with paddle. Jarad and I had a great start and put a gap of about 100m on the field. But slowly the Usshers pegged us back and caught up after about 40mins. While chasing the wake of the camera crews boat I got a massive wave of water half filling my cockpit. Should have put on the skirt after all. Then we paddled past the CP cos it was in the wrong spot and we landed on the beach in at the back of the field be equal with the Usshers. Made a small error looking for the map (it was in my back) and then spent the next hour at max speed chasing Jarad and the Usshers. Finally caught them at the top of the saddle heading from wineglass bay back to the carpark. They passed us in transition, but all back together after about 20mins on the bike. This was after jarad came of on the bitumen- at a corner now known as Tiffany's corner- which claimed about 5 or 6 others including Michael Klim. Very slippery, tightening corner. I was struggling on the hills, but fortunately J and I could descend better than Elina so we finally got a gap. I started to find my legs on the big hills, and J started to slow, so I was in the lead. Managed to make it to the finish without J blowing up, and without being caught by the Usshers. http://markwebberchallenge.com/media/details.cfm?o...

| MTB (Lake Barrington) 1:00:00 [3]20 km (3:00 / km) | ||
| After all the racers had started I rode down the steep hill and up the other side then down to Lake Barrington. | ||

| Note | ||
| Spent yesterday at dentist, X-ray, dentist. F*cking tooth needs root therapy and a crown- or extraction. Booked in to get it pulled early next month. Well there's plenty more teeth left anyway.
I'm really keen to know why I went 28years before my first cavity- which was a bloody big one. And now i have another in the molar on the other side. I brush twice a day, and even floss now!! Is sportsdrink on long races to blame?

| shoes: Salomon Trail Comp2 | ||
| Evening run in Delburn. Legs felt really flat, but decided I couldn't do another slow run so did 10 x 30secs reps on a slightly uphill track. Felt better for it. | ||
Tuesday Nov 13 | ||
| Kayak (Patterson Lakes) 1:06:00 [3]10.8 km (6:07 / km) | ||

| evening run with Kathryn from Kim/Dave's. South along the parks and tracks, then north along the beach on the bay. Feeling quite good and the pace was swift. | ||
Sunday Nov 11 | ||
| Event: Triple Tops Run | ||
| Kayak (Lorne) 1:04:00 [3]10.2 km (6:16 / km) | ||
| shoes: Fenn Millennium | ||
| Morning paddle in the Millenium on the Anaconda course. Didn't go the whole way, but out past Cumberland beach then back in catching a sweet little wave. Really flat and disappointed I wasn't paddling a bit faster, but maybe tired from yesterday. | ||
| Run long (Cumberland River) 2:00:00 [3]16 km (7:30 / km) | ||
| shoes: North Face Anurva Boa | ||
| Following the paddle, Kathryn and I ran the Anaconda run leg. starts with a few k's up the Cumberland river, which is really beautiful and enclosed in a canyon. There had been flooding here last weekend, and there were some massive log jams across the track in a few places. The track out of the valley was almost totally covered in fallen branches from the storm so it was pretty slow. Finally got moving faster on the ridgeline, then descends into the next valley. Out to the beach for 4 km's of rockhopping. The first 2km is pretty though, but after that it gets easier. I really loved this section and look forward to passing lots of surf ironman/triathletes during the race. Turned around at the pier and ran all the way back to cumberland river on the coast. It definately got harder as I tired and I was happy to stop at the end. | ||
Saturday Nov 10 | ||
| Kayak (Torquay) 1:17:00 [2]8 km (9:38 / km) | ||
| shoes: Fenn Millennium | ||
| Jarad's ocean paddling training day. I planned to spend the weekend in the area anyway, so was happy to help Jarad with his coaching day. Not that I'm an expert or anything, but most people were beginner to intermediate anyway so I felt like I could give a few tips.
I was a stunning day, but no swell or wind which made conditions very easy.
| Kayak (Torquay) 1:18:00 [2]8 km (9:45 / km) | ||
| shoes: Fenn Millennium | ||
| Afternoon session from Torquay to Jan Juc. Practiced surfing waves into the west end of the beach on a nice little break. Lots of fun and great practice. | ||
| MTB (Anglesea) 1:25:00 [2]23 km (3:42 / km) | ||
| shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| Afternoon ride with Jarad and Kathryn around the X-Tri course for tomorrow and a few other tracks. Not a bad course, a bit of single track and rough fire trails. | ||
Friday Nov 9 | ||
| Kayak (Port Melbourne) 1:00:00 [3]9 km (6:40 / km) | ||
| evening paddle from Sandridge SLSC on Port Melbourne. The water was surprisingly warm, and conditions ok, but a few storms around. Was pretty windy by the end. I paddled a Roberg, and Kathryn tried a Fenn XT. | ||
Thursday Nov 8 | ||
| Run (Delburn) 35:52 [3]7.15 km (5:01 / km) | ||
| shoes: North Face Anurva Boa | ||
| after spending the most intense day in front of the computer for quite a while I had a headache and didn't feel like running. But managed a short evening run around the forest trails in Delburn. Legs actually felt ok, and surprisingly not sore from the four peaks. | ||
Wednesday Nov 7 | ||
| Kayak (Hazelwood Pondage) 58:00 [3]8.5 km (6:49 / km) | ||
| shoes: Fenn Millennium | ||
| afternoon paddle on Fenn, with Kathryn and workmate Ian (both on very slow plastic skis). The pondage is a man made lake with the cooling water from the power station. Sounds bad, but means the temperature is pleasant 18degrees. It was really windy and there was a lot of chop on the lake. Didn't feel so strong but haven't paddled for a week. | ||
| Note | ||
| Kath had a quick go on the Fenn. I expected her to swim very quickly, but was surprised by her stability and she didn't fall out. | ||
Tuesday Nov 6 | ||
| Run race (Mt Buffalo) 1:11:55 [5]10.3 km (6:59 / km) +1200m 4:25 / km | ||
| ahr:171 max:181 shoes: Asic 2110 GT | ||
| Bright Four Peaks- #4.
Wasn't properly warmed up, and the first 15mins is the hardest. Very steep, but just runnable. Ran in front of Kath, then she passed me on the first road crossing about 20mins in. There was a nice easy flat or slightly undulating section, before it started climbing again. The 2nd half was great, awesome views, and fun rocky track. I ran i front for the last 25mins at Kath tired a bit (or I started feeling better). Really good finish with a fun little flat/descent section before climbing up to the Chalet. Not sure why I can't get my HR up real high- my RPE is certainly higher then the HR avg would suggest.
| C • low HR 5 | ||
| Run (Mt Buffalo) 1:00:00 [3]10.3 km (5:50 / km) +200m 5:19 / km | ||
| ahr:134 max:164 shoes: Asic 2110 GT | ||
| I waited around the top for an hour or so before running back down. Legs will regret it tomorrow.
Kathryn won Queen of the Mountain, and Dave Osmond was King. Kath was unfortunate not to pick up a few records too- due to taking wrong turn on descent of Day 1, being stopped at the hut due to bad weather on Feathertop, and the blizzard on Hotham. She might have beaten Hanny's record time Buffalo too so not a bad weekend.
Monday Nov 5 | ||
| Road Cycling (Mt Hotham) 3:50:00 [4]104 km (2:13 / km) +1900m 2:02 / km | ||
| ahr:146 max:177 | ||
| Bright to Mt Hotham, with Shep, Reuben and Duncan (Kath's friend from Morwell). After the terrible weather of the last few days we were very fortunate to have a perfect day. Started with cruisy 25km ride to Harrietville before the ascent began. Felt ok on the climb, but got a puncture after we regrouped with the others. After the restart my legs never got working again and I really struggled up the last steep sections. We turned around with about 3km to go when the conditions became unbearable. Great descent and the Carboshotz kicked in near the bottom and my energy returned. Coffee break in Harrietville before a fast return back to Bright. Good day in the saddle. | ||
Sunday Nov 4 | ||
| Run race (Mt Feathertop) 1:10:23 [5]10 km (7:02 / km) +1200m 4:24 / km | ||
| shoes: Asic 2110 GT | ||
| Bright Four Peaks #2
Crappy weather- cold and rainy. Started with Kath and Josh again, with K setting a hard pace up the first steep bit. Took the lead after about 30mins but never opened a gap until the last 10mins. Found out we had to stop at Federation Hut so when hard at the end because I had plenty of energy left. Great track to run on because of almost constant gradient, and never too steep. Would have like to have gone to the summit, but maybe next time.
| Run (Mt Feathertop) 1:10:00 [2]10 km (7:00 / km) | ||

| ahr:173 max:189 shoes: Asic 2110 GT | ||
| Bright Four Peaks #1
Started with Kathryn and Josh. Pace was pretty quick, but got a small gap on the 2nd steep part. Ran the middle section easily and Josh caught back up and we were together at the top, with Kath only 20m behind. Bloody steep descent and then quite nice gradient to the finish with Josh. Kath was a bit slower on the descent, then missed a turn loosing 2mins and the race record :-(
| Run (Bright) 45:00 [2]7.6 km (5:55 / km) | ||
| shoes: North Face Anurva Boa | ||
| easy recovery run with Kathryn, Shep and Jo on the trails along Ovens river. | ||
