Thursday May 31

Kayak (Fishermans beach) 1:02:00 [3]10.46 km (5:56 / km)
slept:6.5 shoes: Red7 double
with Mounty in Red7. Cold again this morning with an offshore breeze so we headed out to see first to warm up. Boat felt like a rocked with the wind behind us.
Run (Two Creeks/Little Diggers) 47:55 [3]8.8 km (5:27 / km)
shoes: Asic 2110
Rolled my ankle so that removed any lingering chance of me racing NOSH on sunday. Legs a bit stiff but otherwise ok.

Wednesday May 30

Kayak (Middle Hbr) 2:00:00 [3]19.16 km (6:16 / km)
slept:6.5 shoes: K1 Kayak
morning paddle- first half with Mounty, then on my own. Not as cold as last week. Did some stops and accelerations.
Longest i've paddled the K1 without a break. Bum was a bit sore by the end.

Tuesday May 29

Orienteering (Stingers training) 59:00 [4]*** 9.09 km (6:29 / km)
20c slept:8.0
From Fatrat's with Prong, Phoebe and Jose
I'd forgotten how fun orienteering intervals can be, and Mac Uni is about as good as it gets.
Felt tired on the warm up, but pretty good once I got going

Monday May 28

Kayak (Shelley Beach) 30:00 [3]
Stopped at the central coast for a quick paddle in the surf. Again there were bugger all waves, but that's what I was hoping for.

Sunday May 27

Note

This is where we finished the day with an awesome dinner and some James Squires Golden ale. Chatted to Gordon Walker 2007 Coast to Coast Winner (yes i'm dropping names now) quite a bit. Top bloke.
Also watched whales swim by in the morning. Boomerang beach is awesome!
C • Pacific Palms 2
MTB (Day 2- mtb) 2:57:00 [3]50 km (3:32 / km)
shoes: Cannondale Rush
Started with a road ride back to Bungwahl. Then started Day 2 mtb leg. Mostly firetrail, but pretty overgrown is some parts. Good fun though and tough work.
Kayak 1:00:41 [3]9.1 km (6:40 / km)
Paddle across Wallis lake back to Forster. A lot of shallow water made it tough. Got dropped after 25mins- but not surprising trying to keep up with a 4x world marathon kayak champ, 2x olympic kayaking rep, current world multisport champ and numerous other good paddlers.

Saturday May 26

Kayak (Forster beach to Onemile) 45:00 [3]
Anaconda Preview Training camp.
Beautiful morning in paradise. Water was clear and warm, sun was shining, dolphins were swimming.
Run hills (Onemile beach sanddune) 2:00 [5]0.2 km (10:00 / km) +40m 5:00 / km
2 reps up the massive sanddune for the cameras
MTB (Anaconda MTB) 1:26:00 [3]20 km (4:18 / km)
shoes: Cannondale Rush
From halfway down 7mile beach, along the edge of Wallis lake, up Yaric Mtn down to Celitto beach, Smiths lake and along the edge to Frothy Coffee. Spent 20mins trying to fix Jarad's flat then had to catch up to the group.
Run 1:44:00 [3]16.86 km (6:10 / km)
shoes: North Face Anurva Boa
Day 2 run leg. From Seal Rocks, over hill and down to Lighthouse beach, then back through sandy tracks, and over one big hill then down to Wallinghat National Park near Bungwahl.
Mostly at moderate pace, but a took a few hills harder. Pace was really fast up the last big hill which was off track. I can't believe how fast John Jacoby can run up hill for a big man.

Friday May 25

Run 21:38 [3]4.69 km (4:37 / km)
shoes: North Face Anurva Boa
Planned to get to Bolton Point much earlier but was late as usual. So just headed out on the old run to Fennell Bay and back before driving to Forster.
Note
Finally got my Garmin 305 back- well actually a replacement. They are good when they work- but that is infrequently

Thursday May 24

MTB (Field of Mars) 1:00:00 [3]
slept:8.5 shoes: Cannondale Rush
easy ride to check the bike was ok
Strength work (weights and core) 30:00 [3]

Wednesday May 23

Kayak (Middle Harbour) 2:00 [3]0.1 km (20:00 / km)
slept:6.0 shoes: K1 Kayak
Met Mounty at Roseville bridge for paddle at 6.30am. Borrowed Kim's paddle because I still haven't got mine back from being repaired. Hop in the boat and realise Kim uses a left handed paddle. DOH! Paddle circles for a few minutes and decide I better abort before I fall in. Comment to Mounty about how cold it is. Then....
C • LH Paddle 4
Swimming (Middle Harbour) 1:00 [3]0.05 km (20:00 / km)
fall in and have to swim back to shore. Fortunately the water was warmer than the air
Run (Two Creeks) 40:00 [3]
shoes: North Face Anurva Boa
Drove home and went for a run instead. Legs didn't feel like moving much though.
Kayak (Roseville Bridge to Spit) 1:11:00 [3]13 km (5:28 / km)
shoes: Red7 double
with Prong in the evening. Bloody cold now. Hammered the first half but then we got tired.

Tuesday May 22

Run (Lizard Loop) 1:24:00 [3]
slept:8.5 shoes: North Face Anurva Boa
Felt okay, but legs still not running that well. At least there was no soreness from weekend

Monday May 21

Strength work (weights and core) 30:00 [3]

Sunday May 20

Orienteering race (NOL 12- Seldom Seen) 1:16:02 [4]***** 8.8 km (8:38 / km) +325m 7:18 / km
21c slept:4.0 shoes: new VJ twisters
I've never complained about this map too much before now. I fact I quite enjoyed my run here last year. Today was different. I struggled from the moment i woke up (thanks Dave, Andy and $3 schooners in Cowra). Struggled to get into the map from the start. Struggled to lift my legs over any rocks and stones. Struggled to drop Pacque when i caught him and struggled to keep up with junior NZer Tineke on the last loop. Jules caught 4mins and passed me on the way to #6 without even seeing him which was disappointing.
Wasn't really so much until discussing the map after the race that I realised i could blame it for many of my little mistakes, hesitations and legs involving running for 5mins thru detailed terrain and not being about to find any of them on the map. To top it all off I was beaten by Blair. Says it all.
But the Stingers finally get up for a win- thanks Jules and Matt

Run warm up/down (warm up) 5:00 [5]1.1 km (4:33 / km) +100m 3:07 / km
shoes: new VJ twisters
nearly missed my start. again.

Saturday May 19

Event: Aust. JWOC Trials

Orienteering race (NOL 11- Gumble) 32:04 [5]**** 5.7 km (5:38 / km) +180m 4:52 / km
21c slept:6.0 shoes: new VJ twisters
Good run- not making any decent errors apart from small micro route choices. Felt like i was running ok, at least much better than i expected after a terrible week. I can't expect to finish any higher than 5th in my current form so happy with that. Hard to believe you could make a course so easy on this map though.
Run warm up/down 30:00 [2]
shoes: new VJ twisters

Friday May 18

Run (Dural) 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: North Face Anurva Boa
From Dural while Kevin Bloody Williams serviced my car. Wet and cold. Ran down quarry road and explored a few tracks, but didn't get very far. Knees still felt crap.

Not expecting much in this weekends NOL races.

Thursday May 17

Run (UTS Lindfield) 34:00 [3]
shoes: North Face Anurva Boa
Finally some exercise, but it didn't feel good. Surprisingly it was my knees that felt worst. It was like all the fluid had been drained out of the cartilage. Maybe it came out of my nose like most of the rest of the fluid in my body.

Sunday May 13

MTB (tour de Northern Sydney) 6:00:00 [2]
slept:6.5 shoes: Cannondale Rush
Training camp continues with Damon, Fleur, Kim, Dave and Fatrat.
Lindfield, St Ives, Cascades, substation, Oxford falls, Deep creek, around Narrabeen lake, Red hill, Warringah rd, Roseville bridge and home via Two creeks.
Conditions varied from road, dirt, clay, sand, mud, puddles with bikes taking a bit of a hammering on Red hill. Heaps of rocky technical trails. Tired and bit sick at the start, but better as ride went on.

Saturday May 12

Kayak (Lane Cove to Roseville Br) 3:00:00 [3]29.5 km (6:06 / km)
slept:6.0 shoes: Red7 double
Mexican Stingers camp
Long paddle with Damon/Fleur in Supersonic, Dave/Ben in Mirage, Me and Kim in Red7, and Prong in single Red7. Started near Fullers bridge, then down Lane Cove river, into the Harbour, past Ball's Head, under Harbour bridge, Kirribilli House, Bradley's Head. Then swapped with Prong unto the single. Middle Head, Spit bridge and into Middle Harbour.
Boats were well balanced, but I had to work hard to stay with the pack on the single. Felt strong though.

Orienteering race (Bigfoot Sprints) 30:00 [5]
shoes: Salomon Trail Comp2
St Ives Showground.
Had an ok run on the first course, not making any mistakes and winning by 42mins from Fatrat and 1min from Jock. It was hard to run fast after the paddle, and I am fighting off a cold too.
2nd race- chasing start. Again a good run, with just one small hesitation for 10secs at 10. Either pushed too hard, or relaxed a bit too much at the end and decided to skip the last control. Nice one. Then Jock outsprinted Ben to take the win.
In the 3 Bigfoot sprints held at St Ives, I have been leading at the 2nd last control each time, only to manage to lose each race. First time Jock outsprinted me on the finish line, 2nd time I took a wrong turn out of the last control and got beaten by Andy.
Dave, Damon, Fleur and Kim raced too and seemed to have a good time. Dave was impressive. Damon not so.
Run warm up/down 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Trail Comp2
warm up and collecting controls afterwards

Friday May 11

Kayak (Fishermans beach to Manly) 2:00:00 [3]20 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Red7 double
Mexican Stingers training camp- started with an afternoon paddle with Dave Provan (up from Melb) and Damon. To Manly with Dave, including catching as small wave into the beach- very exciting. Then Damon swapped to the back of the double. I took a pounding from one wave getting back out. Thought i'd be knocked from my seat, but somehow stayed there. Then spent the next hour chasing Dave in the single Red7. Shit Dave can paddle!

Thursday May 10

Run (Two Creeks/Little Diggers) 51:00 [3]8.8 km (5:48 / km)
slept:8.0 shoes: Asic 2110
with Andy. Felt ok, but calves still not good.

Wednesday May 9

Kayak (Middle Hbr) 1:35:00 [3]17 km (5:35 / km)
slept:6.5 shoes: K1 Kayak
morning paddle with Mounty. Feeling good, and boat felt stable after Dave's K1
Run (Fairyland Loop) 59:30 [3]
shoes: Asic 2110
with Ezy. Felt ok, but calves still sore and tired.

Monday May 7

Run (Two Creeks/Little Diggers) 50:00 [3]8.8 mi (5:41 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Asic 2110
with Ezy and Prong.
Didn't really want to run, but got home to find them already dressed and ready. Calves very sore, but loosened up a bit after 20mins.

Sunday May 6

Orienteering race (WOC Trials Long) 1:45:59 [5]15.8 km (6:42 / km) +480m 5:49 / km
shoes: new VJ twisters
6didn't help as i missed 90secs and hit #2 before 1. Quickly raced thru 2 and 3 to stay away from Jimbo. Ran #4-7 ok, but not as fast as the leaders. Caught Big Ev, and proceeded to make the most simple parallel error going to #8. Choose to go the non existant track to 9, but I think there was more climb this way than i originally thought. 10,11,12 were ok. But i felt the glucose start to drain from my brain going to 13. I got it ok but was hoping i'd catch Ezy or someone to tow me thru the next tough section. Had my carboshotz at 14, but it was too late. Lost time to 15 and 16 as my brain shut down. 17 and 18 were ok but then i was caught by Simon. Tried hard to stick with him from 19-22. But just didn't have the legs going to 23 and lost contact. He spiked it, i missed it. Missed 25 (losing another 2 places) before finally making it home.
Very disappointing race. I've run out of energy like this before in rogaines/AR but never after 60mins. And in those situations at least you can hand the map to someone else.
Top runs from Simon and AJ.
Guess i can safely make alternative plans for the 2nd half of August. Oh wait I already have...
Run warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: new VJ twisters

Saturday May 5

Orienteering race (WOC Trials sprint) 19:35 [5]*** 4 km (4:54 / km)
13c slept:8.0 shoes: Salomon Trail Comp2
Another disappointing sprint. Took some longer route choices to evade imaginary uncrossible features exentuated by poor map printing. Also didn't see a few of the best route choices and didn't have much speed in the legs. Good thing there was a 2nd race to the day.
Orienteering race (WOC Trials Middle) 35:11 [5]5.6 km (6:17 / km)
I had been really looking forward to this race. Again didn't start well, losing 30secs on #1. Got into the swing of things thru 3,4 (won both splits), but still hesitating a bit too much. Tried to push in the easier spur gully, but lost another 15secs at 8. Caught Peter Sheldon, but started to gap me by 13 so I figured i must have been running really slowly. But after comparing splits realised he was just running fast. Started to catch Ryan at 14, but missed bits on 15,16 and he was out of sight again. Got the rest of the loop ok but still not spiking them like i hoped.
Not a bad result but was hoping my gold mining technique would come straight back to me and it didn't.
Good course on a top map. I guess i have a bit of an advantage since i remember running the schools relays here back in '94 or something. Me, Tom Walter and Andy hill lost about 10mins on the 1st control around todays finish, but hammered the rest of the course only to come back about 1 or 2mins down.
Run warm up/down 40:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Trail Comp2

Friday May 4

Event: Aust. WOC Trials

Kayak (Patterson Lakes) 57:00 [3]
shoes: K1 Kayak
with Dave, Kim and Fatrat. Paddled one of Dave's many K1's- which was a bit tippier than mine, and i haven't been in the k1 much this year. Got a few tips form Dave about technique, but it's already pretty good apparently :-)

Thursday May 3

Note
(rest day)

Wednesday May 2

Kayak (Lane Cove) 1:13:00 [3]11.5 km (6:21 / km)
slept:7.0 shoes: Red7 double
morning paddle with Fatrat. Nice morning but water was more scanky than usual.
Run tempo (Narmaroo Loop) 30:00 [4]
shoes: old Asics 2100
Ran at a reasonable pace, but felt a bit puffed. What a beautiful may day!

Tuesday May 1

Kayak (Roseville bridge to Spit) 1:05:00 [3]12 km (5:25 / km)
slept:8.0 shoes: Red7 double
with Prong at night. Full moon. No wind. Couldn't be more pleasant.
We were both feeling strong and pushed pretty hard.
