| MTB (Hinterstoder) 57:00 [2]19 km (3:00 / km) +180m 2:52 / km | ||
| ahr:122 shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| Nice morning for a final training session in Hinterstoder. Decided to back it off a bit and just do a recovery ride in the valley. | ||
Tuesday Jul 29 | ||
| MTB long (Kalkalpen National Park) 3:55:00 [3]56.12 km (4:11 / km) +2000m 3:33 / km | ||
| ahr:132 max:170 shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| Another cracker ride. Started with a tough 550m climb on tar then rough dirt road. Then into national park. A beautiful descent down a valley then a climb again for a few hundred metres. Big descent into another valley another climb then massive 500m descent. Took it pretty easy as I was a long way from home and it was pretty sketchy. Then onto a formed bike route, which i thought would be on a road, but was an old road to a mine or timber mill or something. Fantastic ravine with lots of tunnels some several hundred metres long. One more big climb, a descent out of the national park, then 20km on road, again climbing 500m over about 12km so that was nice and comfortable (relatively). | ||
Monday Jul 28 | ||
| MTB (Hinterstoder to Windhager) 1:30:00 [3]20 km (4:30 / km) +900m 3:40 / km | ||
| shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| From Hinterstoder to Windhagsee via Voderstorder. Not what I originally planned but cut it short when some of the forest roads i planned to use were closed. | ||
| Trek (to Zellerhutte) 1:20:00 [3]7 km (11:26 / km) +600m 8:00 / km | ||
| shoes: Salomon XT Wings | ||
| Hike up to Zellerhutte, had a coffee, enjoyed the view then back down again. Really steep and slippery in parts. | ||
| MTB (back to Hinterstoder) 1:00:00 [3]15 km (4:00 / km) +200m 3:45 / km | ||
| shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| and back home again, this time via some cool walking trails. | ||
Sunday Jul 27 | ||
| Trek hills (Grosser Priel) 7:46:00 [3]28.5 km (16:21 / km) +2600m 11:14 / km | ||
| ahr:130 max:176 shoes: Salomon XA Pro (white) | ||
A big day out. Ran the first section from Hinterstoter, and pushed pretty hard all the way to Prielschutzhaus (hut) 900m climb in 80mins.
Then up to Groser Preil 2515m. This has some really steep chained sections and a 200m snow section-
The Salomon XA Pro wasn't really the shoe of choice.
But it was actually much harder and scarier than i expected, happy to make it to the end. Cloud cover from 2300m so couldn't see anything from the top. But did see some of the animals- Can anyone name it? I thought they were rare at first but saw heaps by the days end. Then descended into the awesome glacial valley on the other side to Fleischbanksattel. Across to Temlbergsattel then decided it was too late to climb Spitzmaur 2446m so climbed Temlberg 2331 instead because it was closer. Pretty tired climbing up, but after a bit more food I felt pretty good on the descent. via Slinserschlucht and Preilschutzhaus. The last few k's in the valley seemed to take a bloody long time though.Dipped my legs in the river at the end to aid recovery but shit it was cold, couldn't leave them in for longer than 20secs.
Saturday Jul 26 | ||
| Trek hills (Schrocken) 4:00:00 [1]12 km (20:00 / km) +1000m 14:07 / km | ||
| shoes: Salomon XT Wings | ||
| Weather finally a bit better so we drove up to Hutterer Boden, then walked from there. Got cloudy at about 2100m so we couldn't see a thing at the top. A bit of scrambling on a steep spur for the last section. | ||
| MTB hills (Ameiskogel) 1:39:00 [3]22 km (4:30 / km) +840m 3:47 / km | ||
| shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| Fantastic evening ride from Hinterstoder up to Ameiskogel on really good windy forestry roads. Went past some hunters with a big gun on the descent- a bit scary.
Felt really good. | ||
Friday Jul 25 | ||

| Orienteering (Olomouc) 1:00:00 [3]10 km (6:00 / km) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XT Wings | ||
| Ran into Olomouc then around the Men's Sprint Final. Had to change a few routes due to locked gates but it was good fun. Actually had plenty of energy which was nice for a change. Had a quick look around the town before running back. | ||
Tuesday Jul 15 | ||
| MTB (Olomouc) 2:30:00 [3]58 km (2:35 / km) | ||
| shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| Afternoon ride after the Long Qualification. I was really tired (this coaching/spectating thing is tough!) and it took a bit of effort to get on the bike. First 30mins was just spinning and wondering why i was bothering but then got into it and pushed harder for the last 2hrs. Very flat the whole way, mostly on sealed roads but a bit off road. | ||
Monday Jul 14 | ||
| Orienteering (Kamenec) 1:30:00 [3]10 km (9:00 / km) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro (white) | ||
| Placing and collecting flags on a middle distance training area. I quite liked this area and felt better physically and more comfortable in the forest than other days. | ||
Saturday Jul 12 | ||
| Orienteering (Olomouc) 43:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Salomon XT Wings | ||
| WOC sprint model. Jogged down to the map from accomm with Kathryn. Spent 20mins looking at the map, pretty simple with only a bit of debate over crossable walls, cliffs etc. Legs felt ok.
| ||
Friday Jul 11 | ||

| MTB (Dresden) 1:30:00 [3]25 km (3:36 / km) | ||
| slept:8.5 shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| After another a lazy day i headed out in the arvo for a ride. Crossed the Elba and up into the hills to Dresener Heide, a massive park. Didn't have much energy at the start, but really enjoyed riding through the trails. Then back thru Neustadt. Would be a great MTBO area. | ||
Wednesday Jul 9 | ||

| Orienteering (Dresden) 1:00:00 [4]9 km (6:40 / km) | ||
| slept:9.0 weight:70.5kg shoes: Salomon XT Wings | ||
| Orienteering training in Grosser Garten in Dresden. Ran a sprint course from 2004 World Cup. Divided the course into 3 parts and Kath and I ran as intervals. Did 8x100m strides at the end. Felt pretty good after a few easy days. That is apart from upper body, particularly neck, triceps, lats which are all smashed after the wakeboarding. | ||

Tuesday Jul 8 | ||
| Wake-boarding (Dresden) 20:00 [3]2 km (10:00 / km) | ||
| Mel Thomas (AKA adrenalin junkie) dragged Kathryn and I out to a lake in Dresden to try wake-boarding. Having spent 21years of my life living within a few hundred metres from Lake Macquarie, Australia's largest salt water lake, I'm embarrassed to say I have never tried water skiing or wakeboarding. Ironic the first time was in a dam in Germany.
Anyhow it was awesome fun. The set up was like a snow skiing tow that went around in a loop on the lake. Took about 5 attempts before I finally stood up and got further than 10m. But after that I never failed to launch. Kath took a few more goes to stand, but then almost did a whole lap, which was about 500m. But soon found out starting was easy compared to getting around the corners. On my best attempt I made 1.5 laps, at which time I was starting to tire. The bloody 2nd corner, at the opposite corner of the lake, hammered me about 5 times. Sometimes the board seemed like it stuck to the water and I supermanned for up to 10m. I was pretty worried about Kathryn being injured and prior to WOC, but it was worth it to see her get launched at few times. The Carl Lewis long jump imitation was my favourite :-) Thinking about going back tomorrow...
| C • wakeboarding 3 | ||
| Swimming (to the shore) 20:00 [3]1 km (20:00 / km) | ||
| Numerous swims from the middle of the lake to the shore. I was on first name basis with the swans at the far end of the lake by the end. The fisherman also had a great time laughing at us. | ||
| Run (along the shore) 20:00 [1]3 km (6:40 / km) | ||
| Numerous jogs along the lake. | ||
Monday Jul 7 | ||
| Note | ||
| Spend yesterday arvo driving from Prostejov to Dresden in Germany to visit Mel Thomas and have some easy days just chillin'. Kathryn went for a run around the park but I couldn't be bothered. Spend the arvo walking around the old town. Nice place. They have done a lot of reconstruction of the old churches etc that were destroying in WW2. We were really tired walking around and finally found a cafe to watch the end of the Tour. Not many pubs with TV's in Dresden. | ||

Sunday Jul 6 | ||
| Orienteering race (Central Moravian Champs) 44:18 [5]7 km (6:20 / km) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro (white) | ||
| Middle Distance day. Another early start meant I was the grass pusher again but getting used to it. Happy with most of my run. Poor direction out of 5, and missed 2mins searching for the bloody thicket. Jules passed me here which was annoying because i thought i'd held him off. 9mins down was pretty disappointing as i thought i was running better. Really enjoyed most of this forest, but still kept to the paths when present.
Good confidence builder for most of the Aussie team.
| Run warm up/down 25:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro (white) | ||
Saturday Jul 5 | ||
| Strength work 20:00 [3] | ||
| I never planned to run the long day of the Central Moravian Champs, but it turned out to be quite short anyway. But my L knee needed a bit of rest after yesterday. | ||
Friday Jul 4 | ||
| MTB (Prostejov to Konice) 1:05:00 [4]21.7 km (3:00 / km) +300m 2:48 / km | ||
| slept:7.0 shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| If i'd realised it would be into a shocking headwind and uphill the whole way i would have just driven. Sruggled big time.
At least i didn't need to take the 15min detour into town like the rest of the team because i just rode past the roadworks.
| Orienteering race (Konice) 15:38 [5]3.39 km (4:37 / km) +80m 4:07 / km | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro (white) | ||
| Central Moravian Champs sprint course in Konice. Ran ok, nothing special. Typically screwed up the route choice on the only leg that really mattered. About 3mins down on Mattias Muller (who passed me on that route choice). | ||
| MTB (Konice to Prostejov) 1:27:00 [4]37 km (2:21 / km) | ||
| shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| riding home from race. Tried to find cycle route 3031 out of Konice but it just wasn't marked. Had a guess where it might go but was wrong. Much nicer road this time, but also further. Struggled for the last 20mins but made it back just in time for a big meal with the team. Tonights mixed pork in potato pancake was just awesome. | ||
Thursday Jul 3 | ||
| MTB (Prostejov) 58:00 [2] | ||
| slept:7.5 shoes: Cannondale Rush | ||
| Another nice morning trundle. This time on a different side of town. Tried to follow the marked bike route but lost it somewhere.
Went to another Long/relay training map with the girls, but opted to give my running legs a rest today.
