Felt good to be in a fast boat again, but plenty of water skiiers made it nice and choppy. |

Monday Aug 27 |
 | MTB race (XPD) 2:37:00 [3]60 km (2:37 / km) | |
| shoes: Cannondale Rush |
| After a quick transition, Josh was back on the front and pushing hard into a shocking headwind. I hurt for a lot of this leg, just trying to hold onto Kim's wheel for most of it. We wasted a few mins looking for the last control because we didn't have the description and there was no flag. As we got close to town Josh finally cracked, still suffering from dehydration. I didn't believe Kim at first when she said Josh needed help, but he was really hurting. Finally over the last few hills and into town.
Orion were there to greet us, and we enjoyed our time on the XPD couch. Orion bragged about how they smashed the last ride, but when the splits were revealed we (I mean Josh) took 9 mins out of them. You may have won the race guys, but you've gotta lot of things to learn about riding a bike :-)
So we were extremely disappointed to be beaten, especially after having such a large lead. But I don't believe we made many mistakes. Orion found a track 3/4 of the long leg to 36 and took about 6hours out of our lead. Then they found a better way down the escarpment. Basically it came down to luck, rather than skill, and it is disappointing for a race to be decided that way. It was great fun racing such a good team, and they were very humble in victory, but it was have been far sweeter being the winners. |
