4 nice holes for the arbor in the garden. These aren't your "garden" variety holes however. Digging here is like digging through a sidewalk. The rock bar qualifies as weight lifting.
Friday Jun 20 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Nothing really to note. Oh, caught another ground hog in the live trap (that makes 3 and 1 rabbit). Exiled to my Mom's place. | ||
| Note | ||
| Rogaine Update
Bill went back and actually totalled our points (we had left it up to the meet officials). Appears we actually had 1480 points, not 1400 as previously believed. That'll move us up a place in MV and some overall. Reported such to the powers that be.
Thursday Jun 19 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| What a difference a day makes. Much, much, much better. Need to catch up on missed sleep. May wait until the weekend to resume training. I don't seem to have any residual aches or pains from the rogaine so I'm anxious to see how I really feel. | ||
Wednesday Jun 18 | ||

| Rogaine Flu Day 2
Worse than yesterday. | ||
Tuesday Jun 17 | ||
| Note | ||

| Rogaine Flu
Seems to happen from time to time. The Tuesday after a rogaine seems to bring on something resembling a mild flu. More body aches and slight fever than anything else. Doesn't affect the appetite though.
Monday Jun 16 | ||

| Return trip from Columbus.
More time to review the map and speculate. As always, this is one of the joys of rogaining ... what could have been. Another joy is what really was. We got back to Bill's house by 4 PM and I made it back home by 8. I'm ready to go again!
Sunday Jun 15 | ||
| Rogaine race 8:26:50 [5]20 km (25:20 / km) | ||
| US Rogaine Champs @ Allegany State Park, NY
Day 2 Things were going well through our 4th control. Great night navigation at day time pace. Then came 805 to 502 (the pumpkin). Navigation was adequate but the leg never ended. We were going downhill on a spur with streams on each side with the control at their junction. You'd swear we were almost back in Erie, PA. Once at the control we had to reassess our route and Bill's ankle. It was progressively becoming more and more painful. We opted for an abbreviated route that minimized climb and gave us an extended road route back to the HH. Hind sight, being 20/20, would have had us going NE from 805 to the promised land of more controls and roads and trails. But that was not to be. Our last major descent taxed Bill's ankle to the max so it was two more controls then in. All in all, it was a blast and I must commend Bill on his persistence despite the pain he endured. Even more, I commend his desire to do this again. Welcome to the club! Afterwards, we showered, we ate, we napped, then we left. Another nap at an Ohio rest area gave us the strength to continue on. A stop at the Whole Foods Market in Cleveland refueled our tanks and we made it to the west side of Columbus for a good night's sleep.
Saturday Jun 14 | ||
| Event: 2008 US Rogaining Championships | ||
| Rogaine race 11:15:00 [4]30 km (22:30 / km) | ||
| US Rogaine Champs @ Allegany State Park, NY
Awesome venue, awesome course, awesome hash house, awesome accommodations, awesome showers. The meet directors set the standard for all rogaines. We got our maps at 9 AM and we took the full 2 hours to plan and pack. We started only 2 mins after the bell (must be a record). Our plan was to focus on the SW part of the park getting back to the HH at dusk (see bill_l's log for route plan). Other than a poor route choice to the first control, things went pretty much as planned. Our route significantly minimized climb (maybe only a couple of grunts on this loop) but did add some distance. We wanted to conserve for the post HH loop. We got back to the HH within 3 mins of plan (9 PM). Our stop turned into more of an extended stay. Blame the comfort of the bunkhouse and the hospitality of the HH grub crew. Who would want to leave paradise? We left the HH just before 11 PM and headed up hill for our first post HH grunt. After our first control we heard the bell for the 12 hour finishers. We were making good time thanks to a series of controls on a long ridge and the elephant tracks left by previous 'gainers. Then midnight came and so did the pumpkin.
Friday Jun 13 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Early AM departure from STL to SW NY. Made good time and arrived well enough before dark to get a feel for the terrain, stake our claim to bunks (we had the room to ourselves), and nab some ice cream and groceries. | ||
Thursday Jun 12 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Rogaine packing and drive to Bill's for a good night's rest. | ||
Wednesday Jun 11 | ||

| (rest day) | ||
| KC work day. | ||
Tuesday Jun 10 | ||
| Road 22:52 [3]3.0 mi (7:37 / mi) | ||
| Camdenton Laker Track
Short and sweet. Felt good. May need to take starting blocks to the rogaine. Threw in a few push-ups and sit-ups for good measure. Oh, we caught a ground hog in our live trap this morning. That's number two. Our garden is a happier place.
Monday Jun 9 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Post-Pack Run, Pre-Rogaine rest day. | ||
Sunday Jun 8 | ||
| Pack 2:50:42 [3]10.6 mi (16:05 / mi) | ||
| Honey Run Trail @ Lake of the Ozarks State Park
Connector down to the north loop then connector back up to the trailhead. Last hurrah before the rogaine. Ran/hiked with 20 lb pack. Warm (not too hot) and very humid. Hydrated well. Felt pretty good (actually felt very good but I don't want to jinx it). Time inlcudes tick pickin', beverage drinkin', brush clearin' (from the recent storms), and face-in-the-creek splashin'. Doesn't include the time walking off the rolled ankle (at 6 miles, no big deal) and giving my daughter directions in KC on my cell phone.
Saturday Jun 7 | ||
| Note | ||
| (rest day) | ||
| Why not? Going long on Sunday anyway. | ||
Friday Jun 6 | ||
| Road 27:13 [3]3.2 mi (8:30 / mi) | ||
| Linn Creek MO on Willow Creek Road
Ran with XC kids. Very, very, very humid. Run cut short by Tornado Warning (was actually for another part of the county). Starting to feel human again. Did I mention it was humid?
Thursday Jun 5 | ||
| Mountain Biking 40:00 [1]6.0 mi (6:40 / mi) | ||
| Linn Creek Valley
Rode as XC kids ran. Wore 20 lb pack. Feeling better but not quite 100%. Maybe by the weekend.
Wednesday Jun 4 | ||
| Mountain Biking 30:00 [2]6.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| River Cave @ Ha Ha Tonka State Park
Rode while XC kids ran (camp this week) along Dry Hollow Road. Had a few granny gear climbs. Wore 20 lb pack for good measure.
| Pack 30:00 [2] | ||
| Camdenton Laker Stadium (aka "Jaws of Death" or "JOD")
Wore 20 lb pack and did 4 stadiums X 8 flights per stadium X 48 steps per flight = 1536 steps. Feeling better.
Tuesday Jun 3 | ||
| Pack 34:00 [3]2.0 mi (17:00 / mi) | ||
| Camdenton City Park
Hiked the trails with a 20 lb pack. Lethargy is most likely a head cold vs jet lag. Nothing serious, just annoying. Hope to increase effort later in the week.
| C • lethargy 2 | ||
Monday Jun 2 | ||
| Road 27:30 [2]3.0 mi (9:10 / mi) | ||
| Camdenton Schools Campus
Hilly run on campus. Still a little lethargic from last week's trip.
