Saturday Jul 8

Rogaine race 20:17:00 [5]26.0 mi (46:48 / mi)
Ultra O-Gaine
Cartersville, GA
(see previous day for part one)

Control 5 was another road walk (if you don't count my "shortcut" through the brush). Control 6 could have been a road walk but since the woods were open, I chose to climb to the top of Hanging Mountain. There I met up with two others and found #6 together. Going to 7, they chose to drop down to the road. I stayed high and on bearing to 7. A lot of contouring but appeared faster. Up to 8 was the grunt of the event. Once there, there were no less than 10 others in the area. At 8, you were given a UTM to find the punch (adding about a mile). Found the punch then proceeded to fall off the mountain down a steep and very brushy slope. The vegetation resulted in my going off bearing to the left and winding up in a subtle reentrant just east of the one I wanted. The vegetation made it hard to relocate and I eventually made it to a trail about 400 meters beyond the control. The my last battery went dead so I had to wait about 20 minutes before there was enough light to proceed. Then I was able to relocate and find the reentrant I needed to get #9. #10 was an easy control and #11 appeared easy but finding the right trail bend on the map and the dense vegetation made it more of a challenge than I wanted. The it was a trial/road to #12. There I received the info on the next section. It was a 5 control memory-O, each worht 2 points. My map was placed in a sealed envelope. If the seal was broken, then each control found was worth 1 pt. instead of 2. Iwas able to find all 5 but lost my reading glasses in the process (since I didn't need them, I lost track of them). One of the controls was hung over water so my feet got wet. After the finding #5, I got section 3's UTMs for the next 8 controls (again 2 points each). I plotted these, got a bite to eat and ventured out into the GA sun. Fortunately, controls 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 were a breeze. #6 had the 3rd steepest climb and what proved to be the toughest to find. It plotted easily (intersection of 2 grids lines) but it did not locate there. Because this was near a huge blackberry patch, I did not venture too far but still got pretty scratched up. I wound up skipping this one (those who did find it said it was hung a couple of contour lines low). At this point, I slowed considerably (heat and wet feet) but pressd on to get #7 and #8. I reached the has house at 8:17. Section 4 was a set of 7 controls worth 1 pt. each but time prevented me from going further. Of the 30 or so 24 hr teams, I finished 7th overall and was the 4th solo finisher.

I enjoyed the format as this was a nice variation from the standard rogaine format. Finding non-reflective controls in dense brush at night is tough and has a significant impact on pace. Afterwards, they had a good spread and I ate it up. The it was a 70 mile drive to Chattanooga for the night.

Friday Jul 7

Event: Ultra O-gaine

Rogaine race 3:00:00 [5]4.0 mi (45:00 / mi)
Travel and Ultra O-Gaine (solo category)
Drove from Benton, IL to Cartersville, GA.

Event start was at 9 PM as you were given your map, punch card, and 12 UTMs (worth 2 points each). Plotting was on the clock. Checkpoints had to be found in order and you could skip up to 3. At 12th checkpoint, more instructions would be provided.

After the briefing I drew grid lines, magnetic north lines, then plotted the points. Adjusting pack and contents (out for the duration) had me leaving at about 9:37 (in the top 3rd of departures).

First control was an uphill road walk but the second was in dense brush (with no reflective material). This was a challenge but since every one was on the same route, I had company. The 3rd control was another road walk followed by another dense brush control.

Go to next day for part 2.
