Rogaine race 12:00:00 [3] 60.0 km (12:00 / km) +2733m 9:46 / km

Very nicely organized event. Made good use of the terrain (including parts of the maps that are hard to use during local events) without taking us into areas that are really nasty during the summer. We knew we couldn't clear the course, and the choice of which controls to leave out was an interesting one. We decided to not do the 5 northern controls on Hay Creek for sure (a long hilly way off) but to go for the Warwick controls (a good number of points on a pretty quick and simple loop, once you got there).

Started doing a counter-clockwise loop around FC West. Lost 10 minutes on our very first control, which was on rock in a stream. We took a lazy bearing and walked south of the stream-head, missing the stream completely. Rest of the map was very clean - kept pace with a group that was moving faster than us by having some good nav.

Next we did the FC Central map, a clockwise loop around the map with no issues. Then we did FC South, leaving out 59. Stepped on a bees' nest, and then made a 10-12 minute error stopping short of a trail/control at 80. Then some running to Warwick (2.3 mi), a counter-clockwise loop around that map. I was getting worried about how my legs were feeling at this point, but we took a 10-15 minute break at the water-stop that helped a lot.

Long, uphill road walk from Warwick to FC East, where we grabbed all the remaining controls except 42. This was my first time on FC East - some areas looked pretty green, but the course nicely used some interesting and fairly clear terrain.

We reach the water stop at the north end of FC East around 7:40 and decided to try and get the south side of Hay Creek, reaching the spot to leave the map no later than 9PM. I was getting a second wind at this point and was feeling as good as I had since the first hour. Clean through these controls, plus a very nice sunset, and made it to the edge of the map right at 9PM.

By our rough calculations, we needed to get 3 of the remaining 4 controls on FC North in order to beat a team that didn't go to Warwick but cleared the rest of the maps, and we still had illusions of doing that as of 9PM, but the walk from Hay Creek to FC North was a bit longer than expected, and then we lost around 5-7 minutes looking for 86 (we didn't have a great attack point and after wandering a bit we found one of the streamers for the control, but not the control itself - the organizers gave all of the teams credit for the control). We wisely decided to only go for one more control (having the rootstalk team at this control at the same time helped - finding controls on point features in the dark with no reflectors is hard - I've never done that before!). Still needed to jog in the last 15 minutes to finish with 2 minutes to spare.

Overall covered 37 miles, more than I expected. We probably jogged a total of around a hour (mostly getting to Warwick and at the end of the event) but walked at a good clip the rest of the way. Took a few quick breaks at water stops, a slightly longer break at the midway point, but keep moving the rest of the time - not too much hesitation for planning or nav once we got going.
