Friday Sep 30

Running 40:44 [3] 5.82 mi (7:00 / mi)
shoes: engelbert humperdinck
Boston Common; some deliberately inefficient loops. Some muscle soreness afterwards; not quite sure why. Cool and yet another beautiful sunset with pink and orange clouds, and a few blimps over Fenway.

Wednesday Sep 28

Running 57:52 [3] 8.53 mi (6:47 / mi)
shoes: engelbert humperdinck
Fens, stopping at the student center on the return. 66F, sun setting, dewpoint 41F. That's a little more comfortable for running...

Sunday Sep 25

Running 50:00 [3] 6.67 mi (7:29 / mi)
shoes: bruce
Memorial Park. Seemed hotter than usual, or at least more unpleasant, though the reported conditions (91F, dewpoint 78F) weren't too much worse than some previous times. Maybe running in the heat twice in two days took it out of me a bit - or maybe running in a heat index of 106 just ain't that much fun... We misculated - an afternoon sea breeze increased humidity a lot without decreasing the temperature much.

Slowish: 30:27 for my usual yellow-orange-red-green outbound, then back along the green trail and the road to the car (19:33, obviously). Three trees down, a few vines hanging in precarious positions for mtb riders, lots of leaf and twig litter on the trails.

We lost internet service (cable) for several hours last night, far more than during the hurricane.

Saturday Sep 24

Note
well, that was a bit of a damp squib. we lost power for all of about 5 seconds (in two separate bursts around 4am and 5am CDT), there is a small amount of damp carpet next to the window, and even cell phones are still working.
C • Well, it's still good for TV ratings. 3
Running 55:46 [3] 7.65 mi (7:17 / mi)
shoes: bruce
River Oaks and Allen Parkway. North, then Lazy Lane, Troon Rd, along the south side of Allen Pkwy to Montrose (a few lost parts where the park dead-ends near the cemetery), north to Washington, west to S Heights, south to then west along Memorial, and back the same way (Troon etc) in reverse. It's 2.20 miles to the light at Shepherd, Kirby and Allen Parkway. 92F, dewpoint 65F, no water, final breezes of Hurricane Rita dying away. No sign of much damage except small twigs and leaves down, one or two big branches, and a lot of leaf blowers in operation.

Friday Sep 23

Cross Training 45:00 [3]
shoes: gabriel
So I did get to do some more training. Elliptical, 931 cal (40 min + 5 min cool down). Nonstop hurricane updates on television; bored kids playing around on the equipment trying to find something to do. Weather: 85F, dewpoint 68F, wind 7mph from the NE at 11am CDT. Some high clouds but the sky gestalt is blue.
Note
9:05pm CDT, winds still only 30mph, power still on... looks good (for us) so far.

Thursday Sep 22

Cross Training 55:00 [3]
shoes: gabriel
In the gym; elliptical on 15 / ave 72 rpm. Not too tough. 1003 cal. Nothing but Hurricane Rita on television (though all the residents seem to have become sociable all of a sudden - everyone is introducing themselves in a most non-big-city kind of way.

As the training suggests, we're still here. Given the traffic on evacuation routes out of the city (our near neighbor reported an 11 hour drive to get 16 miles away, until he gave up and came back), this was clearly the right move. We have plenty of food and water; the building is strong structurally (although a few too many windows for my liking), and the interior stairwells around the second floor will be quite the party scene if the hurricane approaches properly. The central projections, however, currently send it nearer Beaumont, 80 miles to the east, so we can hope. (As of now (7:20pm CDT) there is no sign of any hurricane-like weather - it's 96F outside, still and dry (for Houston)).

I don't expect to be doing or logging any training after today for a few days, though...

Wednesday Sep 21

Running 1:00:00 [3] 7.74 mi (7:45 / mi)
shoes: bruce
Memorial Park. It will not look like this again any time soon. 94F, dewpoint 68F. Standard yellow - orange - Ho Chi Minh - green out and back that I've been doing recently. 28:30 out, 30:30 back. It was very peaceful in the woods - a few runners, a few bikers, still, no signs of the approaching hurricane.

Now, time to leave, we think.

Sunday Sep 18

Running 1:09:08 [3] 9.8 mi (7:03 / mi)
shoes: engelbert humperdinck
Arsenal loop. Out along the (closed for Sunday) Mem Drive on the Cambridge bank, back along the Boston side. Felt good, although the time (5 minutes slower than in June) strongly suggests the reason for that... Dusk, 67F, dewpoint 61F, still.

Friday Sep 16

Note
My peregrinations in 2004. 85657 air miles.
2003. A weak year at 32835.
2002. 61119.
2001. 45426.
2005 (planned) at 63021. Interesting how much more of a US domestic traveler I've become recently. And that'll be 288 058 miles in five years.

Sunday Sep 11

Orienteering 2:46:00 [3] *** 18.89 km (8:47 / km)
spiked:190/203c shoes: sarva
The Mega. Thanks, J-J! I particularly appreciated the humorous touches (the triple-control boulder, the radio, first-aid and anthill controls). The actual event was good to do once, but really I'd prefer to do an 18.9km course at Pawtuckaway with about 180-185 fewer controls.

I was sloppy for the first 7-8 controls until I woke up (30 sec at 1, 1 min at 4, 15 sec at 7, etc). Caught Wyatt around number 20 and had terrific difficulty shaking him off. Finally succeeded around control 95 (by which time Patrick Goeres was also with us), only to be re-caught at the refreshment control at 102, then a 7-8 minute break to look for my glasses (thanks everyone, particularly Phil!) just beyond 112. Then sloppy again through 140, until the second gu (eaten at 138) kicked in and I could suddenly navigate again (and cleaning the sweat off my glasses so I could see (at about 133) helped too. No more errors after that. Slow, though - couldn't even dust off Clem from 181 to the finish...

Event: 2005 Sprint Series Finals

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] *** 6 km (10:00 / km)
spiked:21/22c shoes: sarva
putting out flags and e-punch units. actually more like 2:45 in the woods, but probably the equivalent of an hour of real training.

discovered that I had misplaced the stand for control 47 on an unmapped knoll about 20 yards closer to the road. oops...

day seemed to be a success. I volunteered to set the courses because I can't sprint. this only works once. next year I may be found out when DVOA host the finals (provisionally a year from this coming weekend, I hear). thanks to Sandy, Matthias, and everyone who collected a control or two - I didn't have to pick up a single one!

Thursday Sep 8

Strength & Conditioning 2:00:00 [1] ***

lifting o stands. lifting rocks. clearing brush. at least for the last part, I could be President. actually took about 6 1/2 hours in the woods.
Orienteering 32:50 [3] 5.6 km (5:52 / km)
shoes: sarva
test-running some courses. it was awesome. Pawtuckaway is so much fun... (more details of which courses later if I remember)

Monday Sep 5

Cross Training 40:00 [3]
shoes: bruce
elliptical, chez claire for the last time in Houston for three weeks.

Saturday Sep 3

Running 58:58 [3] 8.02 mi (7:20 / mi)
ahr:165 max:171 shoes: bruce
Same loop as yesterday. Tried to negative split, but failed. ahr 159 for out, 169 for back; 29:18 and 29:40. Felt comfortable for the first 20 minutes; still a struggle towards the end. Overnight rain left the trails a little sticky (the surface at Memorial Park is sandy in places but silty clay mostly, so it gets very sticky on the slopes leading up and down into the bayous at times). 87F, dewpoint 68F.

Friday Sep 2

Running 1:00:10 [3] 8.02 mi (7:30 / mi)
ahr:167 max:173 shoes: bruce
Memorial Park. Much cleaner air due to very light rain; also cooler but more humid. Cloudy, dusk, calm, 82F, dewpoint 76F, fog just starting towards the end of the run. Yellow - orange - green loop (last time was 7/23). I like Memorial Park, it's just the weather in Houston that's unbearable. Running is such a physical endurance exercise, and the absolutely soaked shirt I end up with (plus the air conditioning on full blast for about ten minutes to stop sweating) is testament.
