Friday Jun 29

Running 45:00 [3] 6.21 mi (7:14 / mi)
shoes: johann aloysius bach
Quick wander round Letenske Sady and Stromovka in Prague (8:30am). Cool, overcast, and a little humid.

Wednesday Jun 27

Note
(en route) - Amsterdam - Prague. Went for an hour wander around the city to try to get onto CEST, rather than whatever other time zone my body might have been on.

Tuesday Jun 26

Note
Melbourne-Los Angeles (restarting June 26) - Detroit - en route to Amsterdam. I have rarely enjoyed a shower as much as the one in Detroit.

Monday Jun 25

Running 1:21:00 [3] 19.06 km (4:15 / km)
shoes: johann aloysius bach
Pre-dawn, back up to the same lookout as yesterday. Great going out, a little glarey running straight into the sun on the way back down the ridge. A long day that ended up in Carlton (sorry to Melburnians who didn't get visited, but between arriving at Tullamarine at 8:00pm and leaving the following morning early, there isn't much time to meet more than one set of friends - a non-O set this time).

Sunday Jun 24

Note
About 15-18km walking at Trephina (across to John Hayes waterhole and back along the road, and then the river). Managed to wake a redback up in the river after choosing its hole to relieve myself on; other than that, more dangerously beautiful than beautifully dangerous. The lookout at the NW end of the main ridge was more than nice.

Saturday Jun 23

Note
Some short walks at Trephina Gorge. Glorious. This is what desert winter is supposed to be like - clear, cold at night, and a zillion stars. The flocks of wild budgies might well be the most interesting thing, of many.

Friday Jun 22

Running 1:00:00 [3] 13 km (4:37 / km)
shoes: johann aloysius bach
Out to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station and then out for the first 4km of the Larapinta trail.

Wednesday Jun 20

Note
Wandering around Uluru and Kata Tjuta. All the walks except the climb. A topical week to be 5km from Mutitjulu. Mostly cloudly, unfortunately.

Monday Jun 18

Note
Some good training in stomach distension (Guillaume at Bennelong).

Sunday Jun 17

Running 1:07:00 [3] 8.5 mi (7:53 / mi) +200m 4:34 / km
shoes: johann aloysius bach
Loop from Dorrigo house. Route. Nice day for running: overcast, 12C, blustery SW wind, some drizzle toward the end.

Saturday Jun 16

Note
About 13km walking around Dorrigo NP. Wonga Walk plus Rosewood Creek walk. National Parks webpage. Gorgeous. Saw two female lyrebirds running across the path (two separate occasions).

Thursday Jun 14

Running 1:10:00 [3] 0 mi ( / mi)
shoes: johann aloysius bach
Deakin - along Red Hill ridge to Hindmarsh Dr, then down the west side and back up to Davidson, along and down Red Hill Dr, down to National Cct, back up Tennyson Cr and back up Red Hill, then back. 46F, mixed sunshine and a few brief showers, 15mph SSE winds, rainbow in the SE and a glorious sunset in the NW. Canberra really is beautiful, if also rather excessively Canberra (there may be no more middle-class city in the world).

Wednesday Jun 13

Orienteering 27:07 [3] 5.2 km (5:13 / km)
shoes: johann aloysius bach
ACT midweek event, Campbell Park. Twenty minutes off the bus (route: home in Rochester (5am Monday) - Atlanta - LA (ten hours in three airport lounges) - Sydney - Canberra); just time to make it directly over to Campbell Park. Course: exactly as expected. Navigation; a little sloppy, not really concentrating very hard. Fee: isn't $10 a little steep for this kind of event? Weather: +11C, sunny, still.
Running 20:00 [3] +150m
shoes: johann aloysius bach
Jogged up to the top of Mt Ainslie (mostly on the road).

Sunday Jun 10

Orienteering 1:43:00 [2] 12 km (8:35 / km)
shoes: kaija rautavaara
Collecting the controls for ROC's Adventure Run. Another glorious day at Mendon; perhaps a little warmer (77F), or perhaps yesterday would have been that warm at 3:15pm. Cloudless and still.

Saturday Jun 9

Event: ROC - ADK Outdoor Expo & Adventure Run

Running race 59:41 [4] 9.0 mi (6:37 / mi) +250m 3:48 / km
shoes: johann aloysius bach
PowerBar Trail Race, Mendon. Two laps which were allegedly both 4.5 miles; on the other hand, the second lap was shorter than the first. Hence I'm a little doubtful about the '9 miles' thing (my guess is about 7.5, maybe, if that). Took one wrong turning when a walker with a dog was in front of the course markers; probably cost about 1:00. Winner did around 54:00. (He beat me by slightly more, % behind-wise, at the Chase Corporate Challenge, but I would have expected to do relatively better here.) I think I was fourth; maybe fifth. Perfect weather: cloudless, 63F, dp 48F, 8 mph breeze.

Nary a PowerBar was to be seen, unless I missed one somewhere. Also no energy drinks, and no gels. Odd.

Wednesday Jun 6

Bike 2:00:00 [2] 30.0 mi (3:59 / mi)
shoes: shimano m-180b
My MTB is fixed, so took it out on a beautiful Rochester evening (59F, sunny, light breeze: this is what weather is supposed to be like). Since I'd just picked it up from the shop, parked at mile 5 of the Greenway (Brook Rd) and went south to mile 20 (2 miles south of US-20). The trail gets nicer as you go further south: the last few miles were gorgeous. Or maybe I was just in a good mood - even the flowers weren't annoying me aesthetically in the way they usually do.

Brain obviously not functioning very well, though: after reading somewhere about how hard it is to avoid falling over if you don't know how to use clipless pedals properly and come to a stop without detaching your shoes, decided to see if this was really so and see how long I could balance while virtually stopped. I did unclip one foot. Unfortunately I fell over the other direction. Oops.

Monday Jun 4

Running 1:25:11 [3] 10.64 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: johann aloysius bach
Northampton Park. Every single trail west of Hubbell Rd. Some of them several times. This place is worse than Black Creek and once a season is definitely enough. Warm and humid: 71F, dp 62F, damp after earlier rain.

Sunday Jun 3

Running 1:00:00 [3] 7.5 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: johann aloysius bach
Ellison Park. There are new MTB paths in the Tryon Park section just SE of the road to the dump; tested them out for a while. Not for running use until they widen, or until the nettles are no longer out. 71F, dp 66F, overcast, with drizzle starting as I returned to the car.

Saturday Jun 2

Bike 1:30:00 [3] 23.4 mi (3:50 / mi)
shoes: shimano m-180b
Greece Canal Park, or rather the next bridge. Taking the hybrid out for a spin. Not having clipless pedals is kind of irritating. Way too warm (82F, dp 62F), muggy, and the bugs are still out.
