Thursday Aug 30

Running 47:50 [3] 6.38 mi (7:30 / mi)
shoes: gabriel
Foggy; 74F, dp 74F. A moist wander around the streets of NW River Oaks.
Note
Apparently other parts of Texas are wilder than here: http://chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5094551.html

Wednesday Aug 29

Cross Training (elliptical) 35:00 [3]
14/84. 687. After a huge thunderstorm yesterday (flash flooding in the road outside), plus an excellent dinner, it didn't really seem like a good day for outsideness.

I noticed that I trained each of the last seven days and began to wonder how long ago it was since I last did that. Obviously my memory is fairly short: Aug 9-17, 2007... ie, the last uninterrupted block of training before this 7 day sequence began! Before that, May 15-29, but more than a year before that.
Strength & Conditioning 25:00 [2]
shoes: gabriel
Machines chez Cabochon.
Cross Training 13:00 [1]
shoes: gabriel
Warmup (4) / down (9 minutes, enough to watch the bottom of the 6th in the NYY/BOS game).

Tuesday Aug 28

Running 1:04:39 [3] 9.0 mi (7:11 / mi)
shoes: johann brutus bach
Sabine St loop route, a little lazily drawn in March 2006. Weather at HOU 77F/dp 72F, but I'd swear it was slightly cooler and slightly more humid here (maybe we had more rainfall last night from the twin thunderstorms). Grass was definitely sopping wet. Kept up a steady pace through the last third trying to get under 64:30; not quite, but not a bad effort in this weather.
Not the slowest time ever for the loop (I appear to have run it in times ranging from 61:50 to 65:00), but I've never run it in conditions this hot and humid before so this isn't fully comparable.

Monday Aug 27

Running 30:38 [3] 4.3 mi (7:08 / mi)
shoes: johann brutus bach
Lazy Lane / Troon to Kirby/Shepherd. 80F, dp 74F, mostly cloudy in the east but clear/incipient smoggy overhead.
Running 21:02 [4] 3.0 mi (7:00 / mi) +50m 4:09 / km
shoes: johann brutus bach
Tempo. Turns out the Shepherd-Waugh loop is almost exactly 1.5 miles, not the 1.4 I remembered (I must have been cutting short the ending for use when doing the loop once only), so this wasn't quite as slow as I thought. In 80F, dp 74F, mostly on grass with probably 25m climb per loop, this isn't too bad. Splits: 10:24, 10:38.

Sunday Aug 26

Cross Training (elliptical) 35:00 [3]

15/80; 678.
Cross Training (elliptical) 4:00 [3]

Warmup.

Saturday Aug 25

Event: ROC - Night-O & Sprint

Running 1:32:00 [3] 12.13 mi (7:35 / mi)
shoes: johann brutus bach
Memorial Park. The main bayou crossing, while churned up a lot over the summer and under water, was still passable by jumping onto the log crossing (half of which is now washed away), the second one (beginning of the HCM trail) was just passable (a few inches more water and it would have been wet there too), but the third was under a foot of water. Hence, to the third crossing, then up to the bike loop, out and back on the green trail, in reverse back to the main trail, then around the red/yellow/purple trails until 90 minutes. A loop around the NW of the football field took me a little over 90. 81F rising to 84F, dp 74F falling to 73F, scattered clouds. Felt ok.

Friday Aug 24

Running 45:30 [3] 6.4 mi (7:06 / mi)
shoes: johann brutus bach
Same as yesterday, except on the W side of Kirby (Shadder + Tiel, rather than Troon on the E side. Tiel is a bit of a diversion, adding 0.25 miles each way (measured), so this is 2.4 + 1.6 + 2.4. Felt better and easier than yesterday, though the weather was essentially the same (81F, dp 77F; started a few minutes later than yesterday, so more sun). That seems to be reflected in the slightly quicker pace.

Thursday Aug 23

Running 45:00 [3] 6.2 mi (7:16 / mi)
shoes: johann brutus bach
Houston. 7:10am, 81F, dp 76F, overnight minimum 81F. Yuk. I called this an 'acclimatization run' so as to justify cutting it a little short. Lazy Lane - Waugh St bridge loop (2.15 + 1.6 + 2.15 miles) plus a lap of the church to get it up to 45 minutes. 20:15 to the beginning of the Waugh St bridge, 21:45 back, 3:00 cooldown.

I guess if this (measured and known) distance is 6.2 miles, implying 7:16 miles, then I've been being a bit conservative with the '7:30' to '8:00' distances I've been putting in to get some kind of sense of how far I've been running recently, because this was certainly slower than most recent running I've done. I should probably return to putting most of my training in the 'junk' 6:45-6:50 area. 8:00 miles must be super-slow.
C • Wouldn't argue with this 1

Tuesday Aug 21

Bike 2:23:00 [3] 37.9 mi (3:46 / mi)
shoes: shimano m-180b
Greenway - Lehigh Valley loop. Last time I did this was November 9 (2006). This time I was really pushing it most of the way in an attempt to get past the Lehigh Station Rd / Beckwith Rd section before it got completely dark; just made it. It shows in the time being 9 minutes faster despite damp trail conditions today and despite the additional six blocks on the route since I moved. Since I'll be in Houston for ten days from tomorrow, it was a good day for a long training session outdoors in temperatures below 76F and dewpoint below 70F (actually very pleasant and unseasonally cool here: 63F, dp 55F, overcast, 10mph ESE winds).

Sunday Aug 19

Note
Glasgow-Newark-Rochester. Either I was feeling more misanthropic than usual or this was a trip surrounded by more annoying fellow passengers/airport denizens than usual.

Running 2:15:00 [3] 16.88 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: kaija rautavaara
Pentlands. Balerno - West Kip - East Kip - Scald Law - Carnethy - Turnhouse - Glencorse - Castlelaw (top) - Allermuir - Caerketton - Swanston - Morningside - Holy Corner. Nice day for running - overcast turning partly sunny, blustery but not too blustery (and mostly a tailwind in this direction). Good fun. Felt great until Allermuir; after that the length of the run started to play on me.
C • Sounds really nice! 6

Thursday Aug 16

Running 55:30 [3] 7.4 mi (7:30 / mi)
shoes: kaija rautavaara
Canal - Water of Leith path to Colinton, where it rejoins the old railway line - new houses just beyond the A720 (Edinburgh bypass) - back down the rail path - canal. Sunny and the best day of the time in Edinburgh.

Wednesday Aug 15

Event: ROC - Score-O

Running 39:30 [3] 5.1 mi (7:45 / mi)
shoes: kaija rautavaara
Edinburgh. Canal - Water of Leith path downstream past Murrayfield to a little beyond the North Edinburgh cycle path - back through the roads to Gillsland. A struggle to get out at all (jetlag) but not too bad once I began.

Tuesday Aug 14

Running 18:30 [3] 2.39 mi (7:45 / mi)
shoes: johann cantaloupe bach
Highland Park, briefly before getting on a plane.
Note
Rochester-Newark-Edinburgh.

Monday Aug 13

Running 52:30 [3] 7.24 mi (7:14 / mi)
shoes: johann cantaloupe bach
Corbetts Glen - Colonial Village Rd - Penfield Rd - Ellison (beginning of usual loop) - out up Richs Dugway Rd - N Landing Rd - Penfield Rd - Colonial Village Rd - reverse with a few extraneous loops in the N part of Corbetts Glen. Glorious afternoon: 75F, dp 46F, 10mph N wind. First time for a while I've run on concrete at all, really.

Sunday Aug 12

Bike 2:25:00 [3] 35.5 mi (4:04 / mi)
shoes: shimano m-180b
Greenway to Mt Morris (mile 32.5). Good surface to mile 30, then a little chewed-up due to utility pole replacement by machinery that had been eating up the dirt surface of the trail. Warm (77F rising to 85F) but pleasantly breezy and low humidity (dp 57 at Rochester airport). Afterwards went inflatable kayaking in Letchworth with colleagues but this doesn't count as training. We got rained on while having a BBQ afterwards, which had the benefit of bringing the frogs out to hop picturesquely across the road as we drove back; I've never seen so many of them out at once.

Saturday Aug 11

Running 1:04:00 [3] 8.26 mi (7:45 / mi)
shoes: johann cantaloupe bach
Powder Mills. 83F dropping to 80F. Did the trails north of the hatchery (blue, daffodil meadow), then out S along the main marsh, up to the S tip of the park, and back on the E side of the stream. A little warmer than I'd prefer for running, but Powder Mills is nice in August as well as early winter.

Friday Aug 10

Bike 1:35:00 [3]
shoes: shimano m-180b
Pittsford Wegmans loop, with an added out-and-back on the Lehigh Valley trail south of UR. Nice evening; cool (low 70s) and a light breeze.

Thursday Aug 9

Running 59:30 [3] 8.11 mi (7:19 / mi)
shoes: johann cantaloupe bach
Canal loop. (Meigs - park - Elmwood - South - E Henrietta - canal path to McLean - Mt Hope - Wilson - McLean again (needed a few extra minutes) - Mt Hope - across the park - Mt Vernon (old way out) - Linden). Started raining lightly about 35 minutes in. 70F, dp 64F, overcast, 10mph NW winds.

Tuesday Aug 7

Cross Training (elliptical) 15:00 [3]
shoes: johann aloysius bach
5min tough warmup / 10min tough cooldown. Wet and ugly outside, so time to reacquaint myself with the UR gym.
Paddling 20:20 [4] 5.13 km (3:58 / km)
shoes: johann aloysius bach
4*5min. Tougher than last time, not surprisingly since I've lost both general and specific fitness since then.

Sunday Aug 5

Running 59:35 [3] 7.94 mi (7:30 / mi)
shoes: johann cantaloupe bach
Highland/Pinnacle. From today on this run starts up Meigs St rather than up Oakland, so it is shorter by around one short block each direction. On the other hand, since the amount of back-and-forth in Washington Grove is a bit of an art form, this is small potatoes. Didn't feel great: dry but warm (81F falling to 79F, dp 61F, light but increasing SW winds), overcast, and struggling a little with a slight twinge (overstretch essentially by standing up and starting to run from a long sitting period) in the right adductor muscles that will vanish with 24 hours rest.

Friday Aug 3

Running 52:05 [3] 6.79 mi (7:40 / mi)
shoes: kaija rautavaara
South along the Mississippi for 25 minutes (fortunately not everywhere is blocked off...) Nice trails for the last 12 minutes south. 7:40am, full sun, shaded on the trails.

Wednesday Aug 1

Note
Well, fascinating day to be staying at the Holiday Inn Metrodome, about 500m from the former I-35W bridge, with a window facing and overlooking said ex-bridge... (and amazingly, not to hear or see the accident despite being in the room at the time. That's quite some sound-proofing.)
