Running 1:07:45 [3]9.91 mi (6:50 / mi)
shoes: engelbert humperdinck
home - BU bridge - Comm Ave - Brighton Ave - North Beacon - north bank to Bridge St - new trail along the south bank and over a new footbridge to the north bank - back to the south at North St - then Newton St to Main St and then Lyman St to Stonehurst. Cool, great running weather: 49F, damp after an earlier rain shower.

The new section of trail, bypassing the only untrailed section between the Science Museum and Waltham Center, is really cool. Mostly wide gravel, with some short boardwalk sections, and a new footbridge across the Charles. Definitely the nicest section of path on the river now.

Park-O, Stonehurst. Felt good, lots of flow, and the only mistakes were 10 seconds to the right in an area where the map was imperfect (number 5) and 10 seconds standing still within 10 meters of no. 8 without seeing it. Nice course by Sanna, doing a great job to steer clear of the poison ivy.

Note
Cool! I haven't been on top of the weekly activity calendar since about 2002!

Sunday May 15

Orienteering 55:20 [3]**** 6.7 km (8:16 / km)
ahr:146 max:156 spiked:13/18c shoes: sarva
WCOC local meet, Ansonia Nature Center. Felt fine (bruise not too bad), but complete lack of energy. Navigation also left something to be desired.
Orienteering 31:00 [4]*** 4.5 km (6:53 / km)
ahr:156 max:162 spiked:18/20c shoes: sarva
Greg's control picking exercise. Somehow I had more energy... navigation followed once I was moving faster too.

Event: WCOC Spring O Weekend

Bike (Orienteering) 1:24:00 [3]***
spiked:14/15c shoes: shimano m-180b
Genesis 12 hour, Ringwood NJ. Bike-O on Shepherd Lake. Started last, and were in front by 5. All controls off trails; I did the fetching. Some single track to start, then mostly fire roads for the last hour. Nice course by Daniel Schaublin / HVO. Due to disorganization, mandatory gear wasn't securely packed, and so the (useless) space blanket dropped out of my gear bag... 30 minute penalty.
Bike 1:40:00 [2]**

MTB from Shepherd Lake westwards. Using the roads was forbidden. We took this more seriously than the race director intended, losing 20 minutes via a very long detour to the north to avoid a short road section.
Distance in terrain 1:12:00 [2]**

Trek, including a 400 foot climb. Flags were marked on the maps, rather than circles, and once we started heading for the control number rather than the flag. Joe did so too, but went further... Smoked this section to get back in front (25 minutes faster than any other team).

Paddling 2:40:00 [3]
Aagh. Up and down the very long, very straight, very unshaded Greenwood Lake.
Distance in terrain 1:53:00 [2]**
spiked:2/4c shoes: sarva
Return to the bikes via a different route; a few more hundred feet of climb. Some dumb brain-dead route choices.
Bike 1:32:00 [2]**
spiked:3/3c shoes: shimano m-180b
Back along the reverse of the bike section, again avoiding the same small piece of road and again losing 20 minutes because of it. Less coordinated due to dehydration meant more falls this time (three as opposed to none). Not much fun. This got Joe's team back in front in the forest, as well as on the results board (allowing for the 30 minute penalty).

Fun? Well, 75% of it was fun... and the rest was good training.
