Orienteering 59:29 [3]*** 7.6 km (7:50 / km) +270m 6:39 / km
ahr:157 max:168 spiked:12/14c shoes: sarva
NEOC Nobscot Scout Reservation, Sudbury MA. Nice map, not too green, but course setting a little questionable (97 doglegs) and control placement on rocks also not always perfect. 84F, hot and sunny. This might be the nicest map in the Boston area vegetation-wise - lots of open forest, virtually no briars, and not too rocky underfoot.

Saturday Jun 4

Bike 1:05:00 [3]
ahr:155 shoes: shimano m-180b
Genesis sprint #2 - Hartford, CT. The bike loop was a well marked and not very gnarly loop of around 4.5 miles, out on some vegetated but ok singletrack and back mostly on an old embankment (probably an old rail line but maybe a levee). Did a sweet over-the-handlebars exit from the bike onto soft grass when my wheel fell in a hole 2/3 of the way around. Then - surprise, surprise - we had to do the same loop again. Faster this time with fewer people out.

Paddling 1:32:00 [3]*
ahr:147 shoes: shimano m-180b
Down the Connecticut, up the Connecticut. No paddles for the first little way, then a stupid choice to portage a little. Then down, up, back to the TA. We lost 12 minutes on Joe and Erin in this section, so dropped from a one minute lead on them to being 11 minutes back.

same loop again, this time with me on foot (one bike was allowed between two, one person having to be on foot). it was hot on the embankment by now (nearly midday).
Running 1:05:00 [3]7.0 mi (9:16 / mi)

loop on foot to east hartford, then hartford. made up lots of time by being awake and going to the correct checkpoint straight after the transition. this put us in third, which became second when Joe managed to confuse the second team with a feint at the last checkpoint. ended up 4 minutes behind. towing sara the whole way, and working hard. time / pace seem wrong, to be confirmed.

home - arsenal st loop (cambridge side to arsenal, back on the other side to western ave, then recrossing. long time no see, but still boring. i'm really tired of running in cambridge.
it's 5.77 for the river-arsenal loop, plus 1.53 each way to the mass ave bridge, plus a guestimate of 0.6 miles to and from 100 mem. 72F dropping to 65F, 10mph S wind, sunny, early sunset, dewpoint 55F. felt tough but i think this is mostly the psychology of boredom.

Cross Training 38:00 [3]

upstairs at 100 Mem. wasn't going to exercise at all today after something in my knee went into sharp pain as i ran down a flight of stairs to get some lunch at 11:45am. it remained mysteriously painful all day. then suddenly it (presumably a tendon-like thing, in the mysterious biomechanics that are the behind-the-patella parts of the knee) suddenly snapped back into place about 9pm when i was playing a bach violin concerto (the third movement rondo of the a minor concerto, actually). music charms the savage beast, and all. so i went for a quick (but gentle on the knee) spin upstairs. felt fine. still feels fine. 695cal in 33 min, 741 with warmdown.

Monday May 30

Running 26:07 [3]3.77 mi (6:55 / mi)

science museum - mass ave loop. leg stretching after getting off the flight from Paris. although you need less leg stretching when you score a business class upgrade. more like digestion stretching from too much celery salad.
