Event: ROC Mendon Ponds Park

Orienteering 1:05:23 [3]*** 9 km (7:16 / km) +150m 6:42 / km
spiked:9/17c shoes: kaija rautavaara
ROC Mendon Ponds. Labeled as 9.5km but the distance is a guessed reduction after one control was removed from the course due to a hunters' stand nearby. Doglegs aplenty. A lot of the 'non-spikes' are irritating 'slightly wide en route' or 'lost 5 seconds in the circle'-type mistakes, although I think at least half are blameable on vegetation changes and/or the control not quite being in the center of the circle. Only real mistake was trying to cross a definitely-uncrossable marsh - I seem to be having issues with these at the moment.

51F, cloudy, occasional light showers, forest extremely wet and trails very muddy in the flatter parts (the glaciated areas were better). Leaves at peak in places, past in most.

Knees sore - glad I wasn't ARing this weekend and won't be ARing in two weeks time.

Went to pick up blue controls 2-10.

Friday Oct 20

Running 38:30 [3]5.3 mi (7:16 / mi)
shoes: johann aloysius bach
Gluggy run in the gloaming: home - Highland Park - McLean - south a little beyond Elmwood, return reverse. 42F, damp. Route, this time on a topo (which is only about 25 years out of date in this area).

Wednesday Oct 18

Running 1:06:00 [3]8.28 mi (7:57 / mi)
shoes: johann aloysius bach
Loop around Genesee Valley Park, then down the LVT to the end and back. Spent some time exploring the trails east of the LVT, and in various other spots; mostly fairly wet after the rain earlier in the week. Route. 61F, a partly cloudy sunset to finish a warm and overcast day.
Knee felt bad. One step forward, one step back.

Saw an O flag in good condition in the woods west of milepost 8 on the route link. (It was actually just east of the open area, but it's hard to describe it with reference to that.) Is it a lost ROC control or is someone else putting flags in Genesee Valley Park?
