Orienteering 1:39:11 [3] *** 12.89 km (7:42 / km) +350m 6:46 / km

SMOC team trials, Pontiac Lake, MI. Much better run, although not running that fast (a few little errors, and behind Nick Duca on running speed clearly), but difficult terrain to be perfect in, and very enjoyable. Only three serious errors: a little right at 1 (found a different control), lazy mapreading to 9 meant I missed cutting off an unnecessary trail loop, and stopped short of 14.
Great terrain this weekend, and really good courses.
Private entertainment: I would have scored about 302 on the team trials scoring (104 for ranking, 95.2 for middle, 103 for long). (Although renormalization of the 100 score value would have been needed, which would push this down a little.)

USOF team trials, middle. Peach Mountain, 15 mi NW of Ann Arbor, MI. A combination of spur-gully and negative terrain, with more emphasis on the spur-gully (ridge-valley...). Not a good run: four separate annoying mistakes, mostly due to leaving controls too quickly and in the wrong (20 degrees) direction.

Brooks Rd to Scottsville Rd. Glorious evening; 57F, cloudless, still. Warmed down along the swampy pipeline clearing north of Brooks Rd; saw what I think was an opossum playing dead and looking at me. It didn't move in three minutes of me hanging out ten yards away and looking at it, including taking (blurry) cell phone pictures. First 3 miles at 6:40, then some 100 pace fartlek / 60 paces jog, then 10:00 at 6:40, then warmdown.
Bike 1:30:00 [2]

Easy bike out to Greece Canal Park; entertainment was being waylaid near the airport to mind the dog of a man frantically calling the fire department to summon aid for another man whose dog had fallen in the canal at a point where it has cliff-like (cutting) sides. By the time I got back, the fire department was packing up; apparently a successful use of an hour of the city's fire department time. Detour on the way home via Rossiter Rd and via Elmwood Manor.
Added: apparently the dog's owner jumped in too. Idiot. The story suggests that it was the second dog of the canal-jumping character I was briefly looking after, not a dog belonging to the cyclist who was calling the fire department.
Further addition: ah, Rochester local news.

Mendon. 54F, overcast, slightly damp after earlier showers (but not heavy rain; only a damp feeling in the air, rather than slippery logs and leaves). Too sleepy to work after working to 4am (grading) the previous night, so stopped early (6pm) and went orienteering instead. Reran a course from October. Plenty of deer, plenty of leaves just beginning to be out; hopefully the conditions in Detroit are similar and we won't be bothered too much with leaves by this weekend. Very enjoyable session. Not having to teach again until September might have something to do with that.
