| Event: CNYO Highland Forest | ||
| Orienteering 1:05:10 [3]*** 8.7 km (7:29 / km) | ||
| spiked:13/18c shoes: kaija rautavaara | ||
| CNYO Highland Forest. 'Blue' = loop B + loop C. 25:42 for B, 39:28 for C. Imperfect, and not really concentrating that hard; slightly slippery work in the 2-4" of soft snow, with some tough climbs in places. The first few controls of loop C had become rather like a string-O due to footprints, actually mostly going in the right direction. 38F, light high clouds. | ||

| Well, hmmm. Would be nice to map the large area of green between 3 and 4, or else not use that for a sprint... ;)
Lacho Iliev won both events, the first by about 1:30, the second by about 0:15. Can't say I'm over-perturbed at this point of the season (no more real orienteering until at least Jan 19-20).

| Went to mail postal votes for the Australian federal election, and to buy bread for lunch. Hence, a slightly unusual 8 mile loop with a bit more concrete than I'm used to. Highland Pk - Elmwood - S Clinton to the post office, then Lac de Ville - Elmwood - up to Cobbs Hill, through Washington Grove, down Nunda Blvd (a gorgeous street, very inner south Canberra), to Wegmans and back up Park Ave with a loaf of bread. 36F, still, overcast. Route. | ||

| Running 1:01:05 [3]8.73 mi (7:00 / mi) | ||

| Ellison Park. Usual out-and-back from the south parking. 36F, very light snow flurries, and fairly still air. There was snow on the car this morning for the first time this winter; the maximum will be recorded as 39F, but that occurred just after midnight last night, and the diurnal maximum was 36F. This is substantially below average for this time of year (the average maximum for 11/16 is 47F), but winter is near. Fabius, NY, site of Sunday's CNYO event, has a forecast of 18F-33F for the day, which is a little cooler than I tend to think of as ideal for orienteering.
Short-sleeve top, thin running jacket, thin gloves, shorts. Exactly right for these conditions, or perhaps slightly overdressed on top.

| Greece Canal Park. Left a little late (around 4:30), but with a light that actually has batteries, this is less of a problem than with the previous light (plus it's easier riding on a paved bike path than on the roads or a deeply-leaf-covered rail trail). Warm for November, at least to begin: 53F dropping to 46F (clear and still means a rapid temperature fall at sunset). Shorts, short-sleeved top, jacket, full-finger gloves. | ||
