Note
(sick) (rest day)

Supposed to be doing part 2 of Charlotte's testing, but just got progressively worse and worse through the day.

Throat hurts, head hurts, leg hurts (for some reason).
Crap timing to get ill, hopefully can kick it before next week with a weekend of nothing but rest.

12: 0.42km: 01:10 (2:47/km)

Actually had someone to run with for once, with Stephen and Jack not far behind on the reps. At least, until they stopped after 8, at which point pace started to drop off a cliff even more than it had been already.
Persuaded to run with the boyz on the last rep, so obviously it was a total banter rep. Managed to beat Mark and Sasha, but nearly died doing so.

SOL 2, Bonskeid.

Really nice area, really enjoyed myself. Wasn't really running as hard as I should have been, just cruised round having fun.

A few small errors - lost some time on 7, felt like it was further round the hill than marked, and there was definitely extra crags in there - had another look when collecting controls.
Lost time to 26, direction was poor down the hill and misread what it was going to be on. Lost a bit more to 27, but that was due to the windblow - had dropped down to the right height, but there was no way through the crap. Sticking high would have been a better bet - crag seemed like it was higher than marked anyways.
Apart from that, it was good, perhaps a few iffy routechoices, but no way to see if they were worse without results or splits.

Run 8:17 [2] 1.13 km (7:20 / km) +21m 6:42 / km

Parkrun - new PB.

Pretty good day for it, fairly calm, just a bit of a headwind on the way out. I reckon I could go sub 18 without /too/ much bother, though my legs were feeling pretty heavy today. Somehow have bruised my left quad, vaguely remember the bike falling into it on Thursday night, so that's probably the reason.

Toe touches

Absolutely dying by the end

Then a mega session of stretching and rolling, no swimmers to kick me out.
5 PM

Cycling 1:01:23 [2] 14.39 km (14.1 kph) +84m
ahr:123 max:166

From Appleton to Colinton Dell, then putting out all the controls. Originally planned to put out the controls on foot, but realised I'd forgotten the cable lock. Decided just to cycle round after that, cause I'm pretty fond of my bike having both wheels. Worked out surprisingly well, given it's not a mountain bike, though a couple of the muddy slopes/stairs were pretty sketchy.

Also saw a man who had trained his dog to put its own poop bag in the bin, best trick ever.
8 PM

Cycling 59:43 [2] 13.25 km (13.3 kph) +99m
ahr:121 max:162

Collecting in the controls. Turns out my big torch battery was dead, so was just using my bike light, which made the couple of slopes/stairs fairly exciting, cause I could see about 2m infront of me. Managed not to die, then back home along the canal. Also discovered I can ride my bike with no hands, though a dark towpath probably isn't the best place to practice it.

Nobody seemed to hate the courses I'd planned either, so that was a plus.

First rep was on the path, all others by the road. Running just behind the boys for the first two, but knew I couldn't sustain the pace for the full session.
No man's land was more interesting than usual, with groups of haries around to sort of judge pace against, except for the last 2 when it was lonely as usual.

Orienteering 1:28:57 [3] 11.69 km (7:37 / km) +273m 6:49 / km
ahr:149 max:175

Bit of a shite run.

Couldn't get into the map at all, nothing seemed to fit how I was expecting. Calves really tight up the mega hill to 6, and fell on knee to 13, which hurt.

Lots of really stupid mistakes through not having a proper plan/crap compass. Probably the worst I've orienteered in a while. Considering seppuku.

Run 9:20 [2] 1.6 km (5:50 / km) +7m 5:43 / km
ahr:124 max:136

With Rona and Alexis Sanchez to the assembly.

Note
(rest day)

Essentially a rest day, doing some turismo. Went in Broughty Castle, had some ice cream, went for a walk, looked at some Coots. Also got amazingly overfed at the McLeod's house, can't understand how they aren't all fat.

Friday Mar 13, 2015 #

Knee was fine on the cycle to uni, and alright on the long walk home, thanks to a puncture.

Cycling 18:54 [2] 5.08 km (16.1 kph) +84m
ahr:131 max:159

The weather fairy tricked me into thinking I wasn't going to get too wet by only drizzling when I left the house, before pissing it down halfway to KB.

Orienteering 7:12 [3] 1.17 km (6:09 / km) +10m 5:54 / km
ahr:134 max:164

Mass start sprint relay training around KB - at least, that was the idea.

Did rather less of the course than planned by faceplanting on the way to 3. Tripped over a root or something in the dark, but luckily a gravel path was there to break my fall. Richard followed the pirate code to the letter, and just abandoned me to my fate.

Limped around for a bit, but wasn't going fast enough to stay warm in the downpour, so just jacked it in. Left knee a bit bloody and bruised - will be stiff and sore tomorrow.

Cycling 16:52 [2] 5.05 km (18.0 kph) +35m
ahr:121 max:148

The rain managed to get even heavier, somehow. Spirit animal is now a drowned rat.

4 PM

Run 1:05:23 [3] 13.1 km (4:59 / km) +165m 4:42 / km
ahr:131 max:145

Run in the sun, up Water of Leith to Slateford, then West along the canal into town and back home. Slightly shorter than planned, as right shin/calf started to hurt about halfway through once I was at my furthest point away. Stretched about a bit, and it was slightly better, but still cut it short to be safe. Just a bit tight/DOMSy from the gym, and muddy trail by the river wasn't the best in street shoes.

Just cruising, apart from a bit of a banter start to 1 against Samuel.

Two errors, ran straight past the gap between cliffs up to 14. Expecting it to be wider, and didn't even notice it as I jumped down the smaller cliff.
Compass was poor to 34, so too far along the hill and had to double back.

The trouble with being an incredibly good procrastinator is you end up running out of time to do things. Still a bit of a dry throat this morning, so maybe it was for the best.

Was going to go to EUOC intervals, but it was absolutely pissing it down, and I wasn't exactly keen for a good hour in the wind and rain, so didn't.
Went out later to the old railway line once the stars had come out again, so stayed nice and dry.

Still a bit run down, but more like Saturday rather than Sunday. Taking it easy on the bike just to be sensible.
Stuck on some music, and watched England getting beaten at cricket. At least, I think they were getting beaten, it's kinda hard to tell.

A too fast warm-up to get to the start on time, because the guy in the toilet queue ahead of me took about 10 years.
Used up what little energy I had

Paying the price for feeling alright yesterday, by feeling like utter shite today.

Dead before number 5, and I staggered (very) slowly round the rest. One mistake to 26, lost confidence in how high up the hill I was, and dropped down to a control I'd spotted that I thought was it. Turned out it wasn't, and I was actually perfectly on line.

It didn't help that it was one of the worst areas I've had the misfortune to run in. The white meant brambles, the green stripes meant even more, rough open meant felling, tracks meant mud, and paths meant muddy brambles. Similar to last night, only there wasn't a complex path network, and the contours were far less interesting, and you couldn't run. If I'd been feeling good, probably could have bashed through the brambles like usual, but just couldn't pick the feet up, so trudged around everything that wasn't a path.

Actually enjoyed 3 legs of the course, 2 of which were timed out road crossings, and the "sprint" finish, because it meant the course was over.
