Planned this ride 2 years ago, and after on aborted attempt last year (snow!) I finally did it with Phil.

First ascent was brutal, was good to have a flattish bit to break things up, but as we climbed higher the road surface deteriorated and it was a case of 'find the Tarmac' at times. After crossing into Castille y Leon, the road surface improved immensely, but the cloud came in and it got super cold. Coffee and tortilla in Peguerinos was great, complete with a wood burning stove in the bar.

After this we had a brilliant section of open road, freshly surfaced with a tail wind. Joy! Then the big descent and climb up again to Cruz Verde, and another fast drop back to El Escorial via San Lorenzo. Amazing route! To be repeated!

Birthday social ride in CDC with Lars. Relatively easy spinning but kept it fairly honest on the hills.

Pre-birthday long ride from Colmenar over to La Pedriza for beer #1, down to Guadalix and over the mountain to Tres Cantos for beers #2 and #3, then back home to Madrid for mini beer #4. Great day out, 14deg so shorts and no shoe covers. Belter!

I'm delighted that Greg, the athlete that I coach here in Madrid, has been selected for the US Elite Orienteering Squad for the upcoming season. It's well deserved - he's shown remarkable dedication over the last 12 months to improve both physically and mentally. Plenty more challenges ahead!

(If only his coach could practice what he preaches...)
