Hanging the last of the controls
9 AM

Note

Granite event. I was the course setter, so any running I did was fixing things that went wrong. To begin with, Mike Dickey, the first runner on the blue course, came back saying that a control was missing, and it was a control I remembered hanging very clearly. So I ran into the woods with him (really hard to keep up with him) and saw that the control was geuinely stolen: and whoever did it is apparently afraid of knots (even extremely simple ones) because they just cut the strings of the flag and took it, and they snatched the epunch box off of the plastic bracket that was left there. Really weird, but thankfully when leaving I had a feeling something had happened to the control, so I grapped an extra box and flag in case, so I hung those out there. Fun stuff.

When Mike finished the blue, he told me that the last control on that couurse was ~20 meters off, so I went there to fix it but the ruin it was supposed to be on was more of a pit full of boulders, and some people were telling me I shouldn't have hung it in the middle (and I agree- I was just not thinking properly and rushing to fix the location before the next runner came).

Then at the end one of the control pickup people said that she couldn't find one of the controls, that it just genuinely wasn't there. Thing is, she had it on her course, and she's a better orienteer than me, so I really do believe her- so yeah, I'll probably send my dad out sometime to check if he can find it, and if not, well it's frustrating if two controls were stolen during my meet.

Strength Training 21:10 [1] +2m
ahr:67 max:103

I did a pullup! unassisted! just one though

3 sets of 10x 85lb bench press
2 sets of 5x 85lb bench press

so apparently my iron level is 227 which seems really high? I was hoping it'd be low so it would make sense why I'm constantly so tired after a week or two of training, and not tired in the way I should be. And I've been getting sick wayyyy more often than usual. Idk I feel like my body doesn't want to let me train and lose weight and just be strong.

Running (neighborhood w/ Oliver) 28:44 [1] 4.0 km (7:11 / km) +38m 6:51 / km
ahr:87 max:108

Glad i kicked myself out. but it definitely aggravated my cough and I coughed for like 5 minutes straight when I came back and got pretty lightheaded from that. I also slept like 2 and a half hours after school so I hope I'll still get enough sleep overnight. But tomorrow's a friday, thank goodness. I can't wait to get Saturday's meet over with and I hope everything will go okay.

Strength Training 29:34 [3]
ahr:66 max:89

3 sets of 8x 95lb bench
3 sets of 8x, 5x, 8x assisted pullups (thick green band)
3 sets of 10x 95lb squats
3 sets of 5x 185lb deadlifts

heavy weights + heavy flow is not a good combo, especially when I got to the squats and deadlifts I was fighting to not pass out
5 PM

Orienteering (control placing) 1:49:08 [2] 4.77 km (22:53 / km) +117m 20:23 / km
10c

oh I'm so glad that I've got enough people for control pickup that I don't have to go back into those woods, I just hope everything is placed correctly
I sent my dad to get the far 6 controls, I got the 10 middle and east controls (I'm so sick of the green crap over there), and my mom got the 9 southwest controls. I still felt sick, but it was definitely better than when I was on the long- but I did get pretty cold so that wasn't great, I didn't wear a jacket because I didn't want to tear one up and I thought it would be warm enough but apparently not.

Note

Looking back at my courses from this weekend, mainly for the sprints, I ralize that I really need to learn how to distinguish between what features are legal to cross and which ones aren't. I know there's a difference between crossable and uncrossable fences and walls, but does that same thing apply to cliffs? Thing is, when I'm not sure I can cross something, I rather waste the time to go around it just in case, even if it's dumb.

On Saturday going to 8 on the sprint, I wanted to cross through an area that was marked as open area with trees, but because there was mulch and it looked more like a garden area, I ran around because I know often times garden areas are marked as olive green on the map, and even though it wasn't in this case, I still went around because I was paranoid. Or going to 13, I went around the building in a worse way because there was a crossable fence around the paved trail that I didn't want to cross just in case I wasn't supposed to, even though it's literally marked as a crossable fence.

I really need to learn what's legal to cross and what's not. And if it's marked on the map as crossable, it should be legal, right? I'm just always so paranoid on sprints about crossing something I'm not allowed to and getting DQ'd because of it even though that has literally never happened to me before.

just a bit of a rant because I'm stuck at home after races so all I'm thinking about is orienteering.

plank rotation, still cheated a bit to get through it because I'm not that strong but hey it's a lot better than nothing

Today I'm a lot better than yesterday, all ready ffor hanging up controls for Granite tomorrow... tbh I'm excited to orienteer again but at the same time I already miss West Point. Granite might be rocky, but it's too thorny to really enjoy the rocks properly.

(sick) (rest day)

finally giving myself the rest I need to get over this cold?

especially after Oliver had explosive diarrhea 3x overnight, twice indoors because we didn't make it outside in time. Rough night for both of us, but he seems to be a lot better now, while I'm just more and more sick
7 PM

Note
(sick) (rest day)

its such a beautiful day, perfect for a chill bike ride or a walk or something like that, but for me it's almost too challenging to go outside with oliver to just let him pee. Hopefully the rest of the week will be just as nice.

Orienteering long (West Point Long) 2:44:09 [3] *** 10.02 km (16:23 / km) +346m 13:58 / km
17c (sick)

Yeah my pace was atrocious but man I was glad I finished the course. I felt horrible, my sore throat made it feel like I was swallowing knives each time I swallowed and it felt like someone was standing on my chest when I was breathing. I couldn't breathe deep, the whole time I was stuck taking shallow breaths so running anywhere else than downhill in white woods/on a trail was pretty much out of the question. Adding in tiredness from yesterday's going all out and the fact that I don't like longs made it suck, but I don't mind too much. I'm glad this race didn't count towards anything and that I still finished. I'm sorry I wasn't able to push harder, but I'm still proud of myself for finishing. The first 4 controls were pretty chill (at least navigation-wise) and the last 4 were pretty fun because we were back in the middle terrain and there were shorter legs. It took me a lot of convincing around 5-12 to not just lay down on a warm rock and take a nap.

I'm still very happy with the races this weekend. Yeah, the Friday sprint sucked for me personally, and the long felt endless, but Saturday's races were worth it. And hey, I still had a clean long, and I made it under 3 hours, so relatively it was a successful attempt. (even though my time is kinda embarassing but oh well)

just a plank rotation, had to cheat a lil on the last plank. I'm trying to get back in the habit of doing core regularly, and since it doesn't require too much heavy breathing, I figured why not get it done.

Orienteering race (West Point Middle) 55:52 [4] *** 4.3 km (12:59 / km) +160m 10:57 / km
19c

Woke up this morning with a crazy sore throat and felt like complete crap after yesterday's sprint where I couldn't push myself at all. I honestly was worried on the bus there that I wouldn't be able to breathe enough for running. But oh my god I had a blast on the middle. Middles are my favorite anyways, and it's been so long since I ran a proper middle, and it's been so long since I ran in West Point terrain, I missed it so much. Yeah, I could've definitely been faster in some spots, but minus a few hesitations and unnecessary control checks, I had a clean run (for West Point standards).

I caught up to Matt Smith on #5 (which was the only box that didn't have SI air turned on) and I kept seeing him ahead of me and I was trying so hard to catch up to him. He would make a mistake, like overshooting a control, and I'd catch up, and then he'd run faster than me and pull away, and repeat. Then at the end whe raced eachother in the finish chute which was nice (he beat me because I was right on his heels but didn't have any power left to sprint past him). I haven't gotten to properly race anyone in the finish like this in a while, so it was really fun. I was a bit worried I overdid it on the middle and that I'd be too tired for the sprint, but thankfully that turned out to not be true.

Orienteering race (West Point TT Sprint) 27:16 [4] *** 3.11 km (8:47 / km) +98m 7:35 / km
ahr:83 max:93 17c

I was so nervous. I thought it was going to be like yesterday's sprint but oh how wrong I was.

I passed Oriana (who started 2 mins before me) on my way to 3 because she went the wrong angle after leaving the road. It was a bit of a shock to me to be running in the woods because I had prepared myself for urban spring orienteering so much that I almost forgot how to navigate in the woods, and I was worried it would be painful because I didn't notice the trails at first. Then, with the trails, it was perfectly fine.

For the rest of the course I was trying my absolute best to stay ahead of Oriana. I know she's a stronger runner than me, and she can last way longer than I can. I was dying up hills and constantly looking over my shoulder to see 1. if I can see her and 2. how quickly she's closing the gap. By 8 I thought she'd blow past me but somehow I apparently kept my lead, all the way into the finish. I noticed that yesterday she beat me on the sprint almost purely because of the last 5 controls, so today I was making extra sure that I kept pushing, even at the end. Honestly, without Oriana there, I don't think I would have been able to run that much, and I don't think I would have enjoyed the sprint so much.

I had a clean race except for one little confusion at 6, but that definitely cost me less than 30 seconds. Other than that I was quadruple checking control descriptions and codes because I knew that with Oriana behind me like that, if I made a single mistake she'd pass me and then I'd lose my motivation and I'd crash, so I was checking every corner if it's on the inside or outside and if the control is above or below. I'm very proud of this sprint, and I think despite my kinda slow pace, it's up there as one of the best sprints I've ran in quite a while.

Orienteering race (Fort Tryon TT Sprint) 36:00 [4] *** 3.8 km (9:28 / km) +129m 8:05 / km
15c

I felt awful. I couldn't push myself at all. Going to #2 I already felt my legs giving out. I know I could've done so much better. I was almost clean, I just screwed up going to 15. I messed up going to the underpass, I didn't bail to the trail but to the road and then I had to run a bit further out to then return to the underpass. Other than that any mistakes were route choice based, like crossing through the steep, green slope by the underpasses twice; once going up, once going down, both because I didn't realize that I can go around and have it much easier.
Physically I wasn't there in the race, and mentally I was just constantly like "I'm a failure and I don't even deserve to be trying out let alone on any team" but I guess fake it till you make it huh

I'm so stressed. there's orienteering, i feel like i need to do well this weekend, i want to feel strong but right now i feel like crap, my back hurts and i have zero energy and im in a constant state of mental breakdown. college is terrifying, i don't know what I'm going to be doing and i don't know where i want, i don't know how to do anything right, i don't know what to do, people say be yourself but what if I'm a horrible person, i feel awful and i need a break but i don't know how to get one

5 min plank rotation then neck stretching stuff.
So turns out the head-splitting headaches I've been getting have been tension headaches caused by stress and tightness in the neck and poor posture so that's fun. Also got bloodwork done today without passing out, so i'll finally get to see my iron levels soon. Although my doctor said it would help to get back on my meds so yeah I'll try I guess. Fun stuff.

Tuesday Apr 19, 2022 #

Note

I hate being tired all the time... and I wish I could say it was because I've been training hard, but I haven't been training as hard as I wanted lately, which is so frustrating. I'm going to the doctors tomorrow to get my vaccination updated and to get bloodwork done and I've been having splitting headaches on the right side of me head here and there and I have a bump in the back even though I haven't hit my head on anything recently so yeah. I'm absolutely terrified because I'm going there alone and I'm terrified of needles and tend to pass out during bloodwork and sometimes vaccines so driving back is gonna be not very great. I just want to do good at West Point and enjoy it there but I'm not sure my body is going to let me.

Wanted to run in a nearby park that looked really nice while my mom and Lucka checked out the memorial, but there I realized that the park wasn't 1km away but 6km away (and the run I had planned in the park was 6 km long) so I just ran around the memorial and ran in the woods there (probably wasnt supposed to but there werent any signs that specifically said dont do that so yeah) and it was pretty nice. I tried this thing to get in more moleage that I ran for 10 mins, walked 1 min, ran 5 min, walked 1 min 2x. I probably would've tried to go for longer but I have to drive my dad to the airport, so limited time. I actually felt really good, and listening to how people got murdered was really fun (just a true crime podcast, no worries); it actually helped better than music does, and better than the other podcast I listen to does because the other podcast is really funny and it's sorta hard to run while laughing
