Rock climbing (Sugarloaf Mountain) 1:59:07 [2]
ahr:85 max:96

Middle Earth Center area on top rope- so much fun. We started on a 5.7 with an overhang that we had a bit of trouble figuring out how to get over, but we got it eventually. Went to another 5.7 right next to it on an arete that felt wayyyyy easier. Then we tried a 5.9 right next to it with a start in an overhang that we just couldn't get, I slipped off a few times and nearly landed on the pointy rock just underneath me, so I climbed around the overhang instead and finished the climb.
Then we moved to another rope, climbed a 5.6 that also had a slightly overhanging start and had some really fun moves. We then did a 5.7 right next to it that started in a chimney and was really fun, I think I used my hips and my butt more than I did my hands in that chimney. Really fun and definitely tired me out a bit.
Finally I tried a 5.8 that had one bellyflop move to get onto a ledge. I struggled with that move, fell a few times, but eventually I got it and finished the climb. Had a ton of fun on this one too

I wish we could've stayed there longer, it was so nice and so fun climbing there, but Lucka was really tired from the weekend so we called it a day and went back to the car.

Kind of a rough night, but I ended up sleeping with Oliver in the hammock with me, and I was glad about it, because it got kinda cold at night so at least I had some extra warmth. The morning was gordeous though, and hiking was nice too. The last 3 miles, similar to yesterday, kinda sucked becasue my backk wasn't having it. My legs were fine, but my shoulders and hips were suffering and cramping so that's fun. But it was still really nice and I can't complain. Oliver and I had a blast.

First solo backpacking trip. Was kind of misty/drizzly all day, and I went through some extremely muddy trails (like, the trails resembled a marsh more than a trail), but I mean that's classic Dollysods. I did chose the muddier route in the valleys for today because the other route was on a ridge and had nice views so I kept that for tomorrow so I could enjoy the views.

Running long 1:02:57 intensity: (40 @1) + (5:50 @2) + (27:40 @3) + (28:47 @4) 8.01 km (7:52 / km) +154m 7:10 / km
ahr:159 max:181

woohoo I did it! I ran the same loop like last week, and this time I even fully ran up all of the hills, I really pushed myself and I'm proud of it. Because I again slept like crap (fun), the thought of running for an hour straight and alone felt overwhelming, so every 2 km I gave myself 90 seconds of walking to break it up, and tbh it really helped. Although I gotta say the last 200-300 meters were seriously brutal, nothing wanted to go anymore lol

some bouldering, introducing one of Lucka's friends to climbing.

Lead 5.11b (big overhang), got to second to last clip where I ran out of strength and just couldn't hold on and the clip was pretty far out so I just took a whipper and went down.

lead 5.11a, got 3/4 way up just over the small overhang but couldn't make it becasue the big hold was nasty and I kept slipping off.

lead 5.10d repeat of the really really fun climb in the corner that's very technical and mantle-y. Love it so much, was just as fun as the first time climbing it.

run/walk, 5 sets of run 5 mins walk 1 min. Taking it easy since I'm doing a long run tomorrow and I plan on trying to do it in the morning, but also I really wanted to go out for a run and I wanted to get Oliver outside and for him to have some fun.

It's Oliver's first birthday and to be honest, I can't believe he's already a year old. It feels like just yesterday that I got him, but also it's felt like an eternity since he was a small furry machine that peed everywhere. It's crazy how time flies. I mean, I miss him as a little puppy but at the same time it's nice that I don't have to clean up after him all the time and that he'll listen to me maybe like 50% of the time, depending on his mood.

In pain from the weekend, so I decided on doing at least 5. After the 5th I figured I'd try to push it to the 8th, but I barely made it up the hill on the 6th, so I just went to cool down. Tbh the hill I chose was pretty good, just wish I had more energy. Definitely did better than I thought I would.

DNFed because I was so tired from yesterday so I did the first 10 controls and went straight to the finish. I didn't expect the hills to tire me out that much. I also completely screwed up #9 and sort of messed up 10 so yeah. Not my day, but it was still fun. Kept cool by dunking my head in the river at every crossing. Worked pretty well, I didn't even really get dehydrated at all. I mean, I was thirsty, but not that much.

Rock climbing (Earth Treks Columbia) 3:00:31 intensity: (1:02:21 @1) + (1:55:42 @2) + (2:28 @3)
ahr:104 max:140

Trying out a ton of 11s in the columbia gym, we got really really dead. Monday will be interesting.

warmup lead 5.10d (sat once), about halfway up I felt extremely nauseous and faint, like I was about to pass out. Really really weird.

lead 5.11a (sat twice), again almost at the top after a really strengthy move I fell and felt like I was gonna either pass out or throw up like before.

lead 5.11a (sat once) went fine, sat once because I was going up a dumb way and then felt sick again.

lead 5.11c (sat 3 or 4 times) this was a comp climb, really fun, probably didn't have to sit that many times but I was a bit paranoid and scared of falling for some reason so I was going safe. It went surprisingly well tho

toprope 5.12b (sat in 5 or 6 spots) ouch? really hard but at least I did all of the moves, Lucka had to skip one move that I was able to figure out, although tbh it was a little hard to match my foot to my hand there.

toprope 5.11c (fell in 2 spots) Lucka got stuck on the same move I did, and then she tried to climb the 10c next to it but still only made it like halfway up because she was so tired. I ended up using the crack and pressed my legs into the walls (like in a chimney) so much that I skipped like half of the holds.

toprope 5.11d (got to 1st clip and died) yeah no, way too crimpy and hard for the extreme lack of energy and strength I had at this point.

5.10d (lead) as a warmup, then some bouldering, 5.12a attempt but got to not even first clip so I tried a 5.11c (top rope) right next to it, got 2/3 way up and then just kinda kept slipping because hands = ouch, then I noticied that my climbing shoes were tearing in the toe so I got my extra pair of climbing shoes that hurt a bit more, helped Kuba on some V1s, and then did a 5.11c (top rope) with one sit.

d y i n g
I ran with Lucka because she wa supposed to go sailing with my mom but for some reason my mom couldn't reserve the boat so she went on a run with me iinstead and acted as my mental support. To be honest I would've probably cut it short or quit halfway through if she wasn't running with me. Yeah, I stopped to walk a few times, and for a few hills I had to walk up the last bit of them, but I'm satisfied with the run and I'm glad I did it. I hated every second of it, but it feels good to have done it.

my knees are kinda suffering now, I probably should do some conditioning for them. and tbh I think I had more strength to do this run yesterday than today, cuz yesterday jogging here and there felt light and easy but today my legs were just heavy. Not gonna lie, looking forward to Friday's intervals.

Tuesday May 17, 2022 #

Note

Decided I'll go for a short bike ride today instead of a run and then tomorrow I'll do a long run instead of a long bike because I remembered a loop I really wanted to do but it gets on the longer side so I'll do that tomorrow instead.

Completely crashed after school, so yeah I went sorta late.

So today I felt bloated, and I was confused about whether it was because I was eating too much or not enough. My instinct was that I've been eating too much, but I know that's not true, I thought I've been eating enough but I don't think I have, since I was also that tired. Idk, it's so hard to differentiate whether I'm just bloated from not eating enough or if I'm gaining fat.

and I don't know when/how I should take rest days? like I don't want to just sit at home/not do any exercise because it feels like I'm lazy, but also sometimes I need the break. But how often am I supposed to rest? cuz when I'm tired I can't tell if I'm tired because I'm overdoing it or I'm tired because of other things or if I'm tired because I'm supposed to be and should push through the tiredness. I'm trying to listen to my body but I don't know how to properly interpret what it's telling me.

dying but also glad I did them, chose a hill and ran up it 10x hard, break was walking down it.

why is it that every time after a workout I'm like "oh I should have done more" even though I'm dying at the end of the workout and, like today, I felt done at the 6th interval, but I pushed myself to 10. Like, I know that I'm doing the workouts hard enough, but an hour after it feels like I didn't. Weird stuff.
Also like eating? It's so hard to get myself to eat, like I have to force myself to eat stuff all the time because I never want to eat anything, and then at night when I go to bed I'm absolutely starving and I can't fall asleep because my stomach is growling to I get a quick dry bowl of cereal usually to calm my stomach down and that helps. It's just weird, I've always had the complete opposite issue.

Walk 8:39 intensity: (3 @1) + (8:36 @2) 0.69 km (12:33 / km) +23m 10:46 / km
ahr:129 max:139

3 PM

Rock climbing 1:22:35 [3]
ahr:97 max:135

Mostly ropes, tiny bit of bouldering + nearly face plated onto a volume, like it was an inch from my face so that's fun.

Warm up on a 5.9 (lead), fell at 4th clip on purpose to practice falling, ended up hitting Lucka as she flew up from catching the fall (she knew I was gonna fall, so she was ready, she's just like 70 pounds lighter or something so yeah), got a bit freaked out about that cuz I was scared I hurt her and also falling half the climb and then crashing into your belayer is just kinda scary in general. Climbed back up and finished the climb.

5.11b (lead), very overhanging but with mostly easy holds, just sat on almost every clip because I'm weak, but it was technically really easy, every hold was a gorgeous jug. Wanted to climb this for a while but was nervous about trying it, glad I finally did because tbh the overhang (it was practiclly a roof) wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be.

5.11b (lead) on the short flat wall, sat twice because the clips were terrifying and for the middle two clips I held on to the holds from the neighboring 5.10b to clip with because honestly those were not holds I'd be able to clip from, especially since the wall was flat/almost a slab and the clips were kinda far, I was not about to take a whipper there. Other than the clipping it was pretty easy, just had to trust the holds.

5.11d (top rope) on the short flat wall again, I sat in 3 spots, twice because I slipped and fell because I trusted something I shouldn't have, once because it was just a really hard move that was very balance-y and it took me a bit to realize I need to flip my knee to the other side to stand up properly.

some bouldering, trying the V3 that's definitely at least a V4/5 (I still haven't seen a single person complete it), and then checking out some of the new climbs where one was like a run on volumes and catching a hold to the side, but my foot missed the second out of 3 volumes and just barely missed the third volume with my face. (there were other climbers there like 10x better than me that I could hear say "ooooooh" when I fell cuz like it was a close call)

then on the way home a big branch broke off and fell on the street in front of my car so ig I escaped death twice today, fun

First time using a new epunch! let's see how long I can keep this one safe from Oliver.

I'm pretty happy with this run. I was 100% clean, save for two route choices that might not have been the best, but they worked. For the first 8 controls I really tried to run consistently, and I did. I really ran the first half of the course, but then from 8 to 9 I decided to just walk it. I ran a bit towards the end, too, but I was pretty slow on 9, and kinda slow going to 10 and 11. Also my pants started falling apart so I was chafing really bad, I fixed it temporarily going to 12 and because I was sweaty and sticky, it stuck like that until the end. But yeah, ouch.

course comments in my splits
Second again, let's gooo! I'm happy about that. Really wish I ran more in the second half though, but I guess I just need to work on my endurance. I was worried about overdoing it and then crashing on the last few controls and not having any kick left and getting dehydrated. But I still beat Lucka by 18 seconds, so I'm not complaining :)

Overall the course felt not necessarily easy navigationally, but on the easier side. Definitely felt like a long course, with the longer legs and more emphasis on running and route choices than quick, precise navigation. Given that longs are the bane of my existence, I'm glad I didn't stick to green and pushed myself to try. Definitely felt like it was a good run and I got a good result from it.

Slightly rolled my kind-of-sprained ankle attacking #6, but I kept running and being more careful with it and then it was fine. Icing it now and will put a heat pack on later to get the blood circulating.

1min on 1 min off fartlek, after 5 I had to tie oliver back up and give him water cuz it was too hot and humid for him, so I was about 10 seconds over the minute of rest, so I took 5 seconds off the sprint and the rest afterwards to make up for it. Ankle felt fine, I was on pavement so it wasn't that bad. But I defiinitely felt it when I was tryin to climb a rope. I'll see how it feels on climbing tomorrow and on orienteering on Sunday. I really hope it'll be okay. Like, it doesn't hurt enough for me to not be able to run and do stuff, but in certain angles it hurts enough that I'm a bit concerned about if I should be resting it more. I probably just pulled a muscle a bit so I'll just try to take it a bit easy on the ankle, stick to pavement for a lil bit, and hopefully it'll feel fine by next week.

Running warm up/down 11:24 [2] 1.39 km (8:13 / km) +6m 8:02 / km
ahr:81 max:86

Running hills 11:55 [4] 0.97 km (12:14 / km) +58m 9:26 / km

eeeeeeuuuuwwwgghhhhh

25-30 sec uphill hard, and then 1 min down (first one I did 30 sec down and realized it wasn't nearly enough rest)
Really had a hard time pushing. Did 8 hills and was completely done, this weather fluctuating between hot and cold is annoying and I'm just tired from the weekend. Probably should do my long day on Mondays for biking and then do hills Wednesday and speed Friday or something, but on the other hand it's nice to get hills done with early in the week.

Walk warm up/down 9:42 [1] 0.66 km (14:37 / km) +21m 12:37 / km
ahr:57 max:89

Rock climbing 1:57:16 [3]
ahr:82 max:126

for the most part, top roping

5.10c - flashed, warmup
5.12b - got to the top! well I hit the finish hold by tapping it/almost grabbing it but slipping, but for me that's 100% close enough!! really proud of this - I made it over halfway before falling a ton (probably cuz the hard part started halfway up)
5.11d - same one I did on Saturday, disappointed that I fell 3 times. It's an improvement, but I really thought I could've done better.
5.11b - got up maybe 1/3 of the way until I slipped and fell and it would've been so much work to get back on the wall, I figured I'd rather just go bouldering
bouldering the rest of the time, got really close to doing this V5 with a crazy technical start.

Strength Training 10:40 [3]
ahr:102 max:112

10 sets of 10s hangboarding on easiest grip, rest of the minute rest. Then I tried to do 2 boulders but I couldn't hold on to anything anymore.

my mom got a new car! It's massive and I don't want to ride in it for a while because it stinks with newness and the new car smell makes me extremely carsick, when I suggested that we should get Oliver wet and muddy and have him shake in the car to get rid of the newness my mom didn't like the idea for some reason :( but it's a nice car, and it's my mom's dream car, and now we can fit so much crap in the car- time to rack up the mileage again! (we had almost 200,000 miles in the 2016 passat before, so we better get going!)

Event: QOC Occoquan

10 AM

Orienteering (Occoquan - Red) 1:37:35 [3] *** 8.4 km (11:37 / km) +212m 10:19 / km
20c

Leg descriptions in the comments on the splits.

Kinda proud of this run, I mean I placed really well (probably because most of the fast people are on the Billygoat or ran Blue or Green), but really proud of my navigation. It felt a bit technical, but in a good, fun way. I probably should have run more, but tbh I'm tired from this week and especially from all the climbing.

Just wish the map didn't have so many unnecessary formlines, kinda annoying, but at least you think the hills are bigger than they are so it's a pleasant surprise when you don't have to climb as mucha s your feared.

It's also interesting seeing how Martins and I had practically identical route choices for the shorter-medium legs, but on the long ones we were different- and he is clearly a lot faster than me because he gained a lot of time on me on legs I didn't even lose time on, but still made at least 2 mistakes that were both bigger than mine. Definitely shows that I've got the navigation down pretty well, I just need to gain speed and endurance.

Yes Lucka and I got a bit addicted
And we were introducing a friend to climbing too

Mix of bouldering and top rope, the skin on my hands felt super raw so it hurt to hold on to anything, but I got to the top of a 5.11d which I fell on a gazillion times but I think if I wasn't so extremely tired from yesterday and earlier today I think I could've flashed it/almost flashed it. Next time I'm trying again.

Also I've completely lost my appetiite? like I still eat food and all that but I never know what to eat because even though I'm hungry, I have zero appetite for anything. Kinda annoying ngl, but at least it'll be easier to lose some fat so I can be an even better orienteer and climber. It feels like I'm already seeing progress, and I at least feel it. Just gotta keep pushing myself.

Running 37:15 [3] 4.4 km (8:28 / km) +105m 7:34 / km

construction going on ruined my plan to complete the 40 minutes because it forced me to go nearly straight uphill and I couldn't do it after the rest of the run and I was nearly home anyways.

hot, humid, and hilly, at least I'm preparing for Portugal. At around 25mins I started doing my 5 mins running, 1 min walk because I was just dying, yknow, as you do

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.3 km (7:43 / km)

Running hills 18:03 [3] 1.83 km (9:51 / km) +53m 8:36 / km

messiest hills of my life

Tried to do 1 min on 1 min off, with the 1 min on being uphill. First 3 kinda worked, except on 1 and 3 the hill started dipping down at the end of the minute so I ran the last 10-15 seconds in the woods, and on 2 the hill started out as not a hill and then lifted up to barely a hill becuase I miscalculated the fact that the hill I was doing it on wasn't as long of a hill as I thought and there's this long-ish flat section in the middle of it. Then on 4 I walked a few steps in the middle of it because I just couldn't, and then hlf-assedly finished the interval on again, a flat part, because I ran out of hill, and then 5 I snded up splitting into 5 and 6, both being 30 seconds on and 1 min off because 1. I was tired 2. It was hot so I didn't wanna pass out and 3. it was the steepest part of the hill so ouch.
Then on the way down I did two 30 sec intervals on the uphill-ish sections and yeah. Huge mess but I'm glad I kicked myself out to do some sort of hill, even though they were a disaster like this. Apparently today is not my day for doing anything structured.

Walk warm up/down 14:45 [1] 1.13 km (13:05 / km) +43m 10:59 / km

so turns out with this cough I can't get rid of it's almost like I have asthma... I'm fine for the most part until I start breathing more heavily, as in exercising or laughing or just going up stairs. It's really annnoying and I can't wait for it to go away.

Strength Training (hip stretches) 15:00 [1]

did these stretches
This hip hurting business sucks. And stretching it does too, it's so annoying how insanely unflexible my right hip and leg is, while my left is perfectly fine (no wonder the pain is in the right hip). I wanted to start getting my mileage up for training and getting better endurance, but I think I'm going to bike for 1:30 to 2 hours at least once a week. I really should start structuring my training more, and I think I'm going to try to do workouts on monday and friday (probably hills on Mondays if I can and speedwork on fridays) and then on Wednesdays to do longer, more endurance stuff, i.e. the biking. Here's to hoping that works out, it's hard to keep a training schedule up with constant changes in schedules and weekends in general are insanely tiring, so I'm a bit worried about the Monday hills- we'll see. I'll give it my best shot, and if it doesn't work out I'll maybe shift the workouts to tuesday-friday or something.

Hiking 51:35 [2] 4.36 km (11:49 / km) +15m 11:37 / km
