Lake District Mountain Trial - Medium course - 1st
I've always wanted to do the LDMT which is pretty much my ideal race. Opted for the medium course given I never really run more than 2 hours in training so the expected winning time of 3h30m was about enough. Conditions were typical of the event - clag and heavy rain showers. The clag only really affected the first couple of controls on Fairfield. The start was a marked route up to Alcock Tarn for map issue, and the first leg a bit of a monster to a stream bend in the Corrie to the north of Hart Crag. Opted to go for what looked like the nicer route via the ridge to Fairfield then drop down the gully. The gully was very steep and slippery and managed to slit my hand on a rock but not too bad. #2 was on Seat Sandal so traversed round the north side of Fairfield, which was quite a magical setting with big cliffs disappearing up into the mist, then climbed over Deepdale Hause. Struggled to get a decent line to the tarn in the mist but once at the tarn was out the mist for the last time. Pretty straightforward from there to the road crossing at Dunmail Raise. Splits show I had nearly a 4min lead by then. Spent the tough climb up the other side fuelling up and had already planned the route to take, across the back of Steel Fell and Calf Crag before swinging south over the shoulder of Tarn Crag to the checkpoint. All went OK though the weather deteriorated to some very heavy showers and a strong wind. Splits show Zoe (who came 2nd) gained 4mins back on this leg so would be interesting to see where she went. I had contemplated going east of the top of Calf Crag which would've been more direct but a bit more climb. Leg across to #6, a sheepfold near Lang Howe, had some real route choice especially given it crossed a very knolly orienteering area! I opted for an initial climb up onto Blea Rigg then the plan was to blast down the ridge. Execution was OK but the ridge proved quite complex and not that runnable in bits. Got fastest split though so was a decent choice. Last leg on the hill looked straightforward on the map but ended up quite confusing with so many trods about. I hesitated and checked the map a few times as didn't want to blow it. Thankfully no mistake though lost a minute or two. From last control legged it down the marked route off the hill and through the town. Zoe who ended up second, and had started 5mins ahead, was only 1.41 slower though I hadn't seen her all day. In fact I didn't see anyone from #5 to the finish, despite the Short course having the same final three controls. Really enjoyed the run and pleased with the result. Took it pretty steady all day pacing wise and was fairly strong at the finish. Ate and drank well all the way which helped. And the manky weather was also a plus. Hope I'm not forced to do Classic next year as cramp hit fairly swiftly after the finish!
