Great weather today and great execution by the course setters in being quick and accurate with course finalizations this morning!!
After talking with finishers, I received a lot of helpful insights and improves for future courses, as well as pats on the back for things done well. Thankfully, it seemed that, overall racers were pleased with course
sequence, legs (route choices), scenery, and point placement. After many hard hours laboring in woods and in Washington Hall, I was thrilled to tick that box. With regards to things to do better, one that Jordan Laughlin suggested was to compare per k times in the specific area when computing the winning, expected per k time. This is an excellent idea - and
would've prevented my Blue from morphing into a small ultralong. The second improvement, one that received unanimous support for, was water points. My course should've hosted central and frequent water points. Albeit the hot afternoon weather was an oddball and higher said otherwise, it still needed to be done. Perhaps a better way to look at course design is to, frankly, treat competitors like customers: look for ways to improve the experience for the racer even if it means adjusting my goal of a very challenging Red/Blue. Being new in this business, I walk away from Day 1 with a smile on my face and ideas for the future!
