What an epic day. Spent 9hrs out there in some beautiful country less than an hr from my front door. What a place NZ is to live.
The goal was to spend 9hrs as a MTB-Run-MTB. With the majority being on the bike. However the day ended up as a MTB-Run-MTB-Run-MTB-Run. Yup really it did. Yvon Chonaird once said "true adventure doesn't start until things start going wrong" and that would sum up today!
Started well, with big 1200m climb up Staircase Rd past Lake Chalice on my way to Mt Patriarch. Ditched the bike and run the last 30mins to the summit. Came back got the bike and head back. Then the side wall on my tire blew out. YIKES. no spare tire of course so patched it with a tube patch. Sorta ghetto looking but it work for most of the day. was really nervous it wasn't going last so dropped the PSI and rode really conservatively, freaking out it was going to burst again and then be SOL and have to run about 40km back to my car.
Got to Lake Chalice all good, and ditched the bike and ran for 1hr partly to get water as it was HOT. got back on the bike for the big downhill i rode up in the am. Again rode conservatively and believe it or not i made it. Got the bottom for the 5km flat ride back to the car and boom my tire went. Ended up running the last 5km pushing the bike.
Told you it was epic. But really was good day even to have those trials and problems... all good practice for GZ
