Orienteering - Forest race (JK Day 3 - Kilnsey) 1:46:06 [5] 16.71 km (6:21 / km) +470m 5:34 / km
shoes: X-Talon 212 (Jan16)

http://www.jk.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#64&route=...

Another solid performance to finish 6th overall (7th yesterday, 8th today)
http://siresults.co.uk/2016/JK/overall/m21l_class....

Rain at the start which brightened into glorious sunshine for about 30s before becoming overcast. Very glad to finish several minutes before the torrential hail began.

Aimed to concentrate on being really careful and not just blindly rushing into things. This plan worked well until later on near the end of the course, when I'd forgotten about it.

Annoying loss of (60s) on #3 where I went to the right crag and peered over the edge and saw nothing, went off to check another crag, navigated back to the same crag and saw it tucked underneath. I think more fairly this should have been described as 'crag, under rather than crag, foot.

It was around this point that I realised the blue stuff on the map was meant to be grey and was limestone rather than marsh. I then remembered Paul telling us the previous night about someone else doing this.

Flirted with the idea of taking a more circuitous route on the long leg to avoid some up-down but decided that straight was probably best over this terrain. Happy with this.

In 4th place at #10 - good stuff. Then lost another (60s) on 12 in the wrong line of pits; the plan of using the crossing point behind the control as an AP worked though and prevented a more major loss.

Annoying (2mins) lost on 16 - only a k or so from the end now and starting to get tired I guess - plan worked perfectly and came out at a small enclosure - then made a terrible assumption that it wasn't the enclosure I wanted (despite there being plenty of evidence to the contrary) and ran in totally the wrong direction for a bit until realising.

Then lost another (60s) on 17 not being precise enough and losing where I was, then struggling to relocate.

Rest of course fine; to have no biggies and only lose 5 mins in total I'm quite happy with; running speed is good; 5 mins quicker would've put me 3rd today. Given most time lost was very near the end, if I keep up the longer races I should get better at keeping the concentration for long enough. So a good weekend so far; fingers crossed for a good run in the relay although the change in map scale may be an issue...

Orienteering - Forest race (JK Day 2 - Wass) 1:35:11 [5] 11.04 km (8:37 / km) +419m 7:15 / km

Hurrary - good run at a big event :)
7th/37, M21L

Despite compass issue - more on that later.

1:15,000 map a nightmare to read. Magnifier the whole way round was a lifesaver. Would have had no chance without it.

http://www.jk.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#61&route=...

No real mistakes more than a few seconds until #11; went back to check a knoll which I knew was probably wrong, and was wrong, but didn't have quite enough confidence to ignore it (60s).

Slight wobble 16-17 ("this river looks at a weird angle, and that fence; what's going on here? But I can be confident in the river/fence combination, so I'll carry on") but no real time loss. Didn't see the lower ride to 18 so not the best route there.

23-24 - major wobble - "I'm expecting a river running N-S, but that one is running E-W. Okay - so where must I be? Wait - there isn't an E-W river on the map. Am I off the map?! No I can't be; I'd have crossed a fence. Wtf is going on. There's the fence, there's the river, there are loads of people here so I'm not off the map - I must have a compass issue. Looks fine though..."

My compass has a small crack in the bottom edge. It doesn't appear to have any air in it. But something is catching on the side, so it doesn't rotate sometimes. So it's fine for about 180 degrees of rotation, but then it sticks. This is a major issue. I didn't fully realise quite how bad it was until the end. But I was essentially running without a compass through lots of legs where you needed a compass. Anyway, it was at least 60s of confusion on leg 24.

25 was the only leg which was entirely luck, there was no distinction between the white and the LG unlike on the other parts of the map, and I missed the pond, so no real idea where I was until...the control. Phew!

Rest good until the unmapped stile which 50% of the courses went over (our crossing point wasn't on their map, either).

So only really 2 mins and 2 places lost:
http://siresults.co.uk/2016/JK/day2/m21l_class.htm...
in a tough area with 34 controls. Very happy with that.

Note

Interesting side-point - when did the compass break? It wasn't today; it must've been broken for the whole thing. Now I recall, I do remember some odd behaviour at Bridgwater, although because that was urban I didn't really pick up on it at the time. I guess it must have been at the Quantocks the week before, where I do remember falling over and landing on it.

Orienteering - Urban race (JL Sprint Leeds Uni) 20:38 [5] 3.0 km (6:53 / km) +45m 6:24 / km
shoes: Nike Pegasus 32

Bit rubbish.
Very short first leg, then long complex #2 which didn't spend long enough (ie any time) thinking about - lost over a minute going a circuitous way.nothing else that major but 15s here or there going the suboptimal way around buildings and things.
Second half of the course I was into the map and didn't do that much wrong.

Really good fun and leg times where I didn't make errors show that my running speed isn't too bad. Hopefully the rest of the weekend's longer courses will play to my strengths a bit more...

Running - Road/Track (B+W Training) 51:41 [5] 8.88 km (5:49 / km) +45m 5:41 / km
max:164 shoes: Asics Nimbus 17

4*1400m Aviva loop

We call this 1500m but it's much closer to 1400m. So they're 1400s, not 1500s.

1400s: 5:16,12,15,14

Consistent. And quicker than I've done them before.

Running - Road/Track intervals (B+W Training) 1:21:48 [5] 11.65 km (7:01 / km)
max:162 shoes: Asics Nimbus 17

2x(3x450m),5x300m,10x150m

First 450 was a 500, then demoted by Keith (I think unreasonably - the other guys set off way too fast!)

500s: 104
450s: 91,90,91,89,87
300s: 57,58,56,55,55
150s: 26*9,25

No DOMS after the Cheese yesterday interestingly; given it was so bad for the Grizzly.

Largely similar times to last month.
